The “Saved by the Bell” star identified in 1993 news reports was Mario Lopez. What was Mario Lopez accused of?
On May 11, 1993, the Los Angeles Times, publishing Associated Press reporting, said Chula Vista police were investigating an 18-year-old woman’s allegation that Lopez raped her at his home on April 28. The report said the woman had gone to his home voluntarily before the alleged assault. That detail was part of her account as reported to police, not an independently established fact. At the time, Lopez was 19 and was known as a performer on Saved by the Bell. Detective John McAvenia told the Associated Press: “What we have here, basically, is an allegation of date rape.” The report said Lopez had not been arrested, was cooperating with detectives, and denied the allegation in an initial interview. Those are the reported status and response at that point in the investigation, not a verdict.
Were charges filed against Mario Lopez?
No. On June 18, 1993, the Los Angeles Times reported that prosecutors would not seek charges over allegations made by two local women. A decision not to file charges is not the same as a trial or a judicial finding. The contemporaneous reports establish that police investigated an allegation, Lopez denied it, and prosecutors declined to pursue charges; they do not establish a court finding that Lopez was guilty.
What is known about the second allegation?
The June 1993 Los Angeles Times report confirms that prosecutors considered allegations from two women, but it does not detail the second woman’s account. A later secondary summary describes that allegation as concerning an incident in 1991, when Lopez would have been 17 or 18. Because that timing comes from a secondary account rather than the contemporaneous report, it should be treated as a limited, attributed detail—not as a fully documented account of the allegation. Why the headline needs qualification
Calling the allegation a “horrific crime” can blur the difference between an accusation and an established finding. The 1993 coverage described allegations and a prosecutorial decision not to bring charges; it does not show that a court determined Lopez committed a crime. Likewise, “current” may mean that Lopez participated in the Saved by the Bell revival-era series, but participation does not establish that the show is airing now. NBC’s Saved by the Bell page.
