His production company, Higher Ground Productions, is credited as an executive producer, and director Sam Esmail says Obama and Michelle Obama gave feedback on the screenplay and on cuts of the film. Esmail described that input as covering character, empathy, themes and the disaster elements—not as Obama dictating the plot.
What are the film’s official credits?
Netflix identifies Leave the World Behind as an adaptation of Rumaan Alam’s novel, with Sam Esmail as writer and director. The film’s production credits name Esmail Corp and Red Om Films as producers and Higher Ground Productions as an executive producer. Netflix’s 2022 announcement also names Higher Ground’s Tonia Davis among the executive producers.
Those credits distinguish the company’s role from the individual creative roles: Higher Ground is credited as an executive producer, while Esmail is credited as the film’s writer and director. The credits do not identify Barack Obama as the screenwriter or director. Netflix’s Media Center listing provides the film and adaptation credits, and Netflix’s project announcement gives the production context.
What feedback did Obama give?
In an interview with British GQ, Esmail said the Obamas gave notes during the script phase and after seeing cuts. Asked whether they gave notes, Esmail replied: “Yeah, absolutely. During the script phase, and during post, when they saw a couple of cuts.”

He described the subjects as a broad range: “characters and empathy,” the film’s themes and its cautionary-tale approach, as well as the disaster elements. That is Esmail’s account of the feedback from the Obamas; it is not a direct quotation from Barack Obama. Read Esmail’s interview with British GQ.
How did Obama’s advice affect the disaster story?
A 2023 Kirkus Reviews report quotes Esmail describing a more specific effect: he said some early script drafts pushed events further than the finished film, and that Obama helped ground him in how events might unfold in reality, drawing on Obama’s experience. This establishes what Esmail says the advice did; it does not independently verify the realism of the film’s fictional disaster or make the story a prediction, government plan or warning from Obama.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, how should Obama’s role be described?
The clearest description is that Higher Ground executive-produced the film and that, according to Esmail, Barack and Michelle Obama offered producer-side feedback during writing and post-production. The available credits and interviews support describing Obama as a sounding board whose advice helped shape discussion of characters, themes and disaster elements. They do not support calling him the film’s writer or director.
