Spoilers for the 2024 film Azrael. The film leaves the newborn’s exact identity unresolved. After the cult leader gives birth to an uncanny infant and dies, Azrael lifts the child and smiles. The ending invites a Devil or Antichrist interpretation, but it does not confirm either one as the definitive answer.
What happens at the end of Azrael?
After the violence that turns Azrael against the cult, its pregnant leader gives birth to a strange, nonhuman-looking infant. The leader dies. Azrael picks up the newborn, and her expression shifts into a satisfied smile.
That final image supplies the ending’s clearest facts: a disturbing birth, a death, and Azrael’s unexpected embrace of the child. Its religious meaning is suggestive rather than explicit.
Who is the baby?
The film does not settle the baby’s identity. Director E.L. Katz alluded to the Devil, and writer Simon Barrett said a Devil or Antichrist reading would be acceptable. Barrett also called the child an “antithetical resurrection figure,” but said he did not have a definitive answer. These are possible interpretations, not confirmed plot revelations.

Katz’s brief comment—“I think we know who he is”—sounds certain, but it sits alongside Barrett’s stated uncertainty. Taken together, the filmmakers’ remarks support reading the birth through religious imagery without claiming the film identifies the infant unambiguously. Barrett described the film’s approach as offering hints and letting viewers piece together its mythology rather than spelling it out. In an interview about the ending, he put the Devil-or-Antichrist options this way: “I think either one of those would be pretty acceptable… I mean, we just called it the goat baby…”
Devil or Antichrist?
Both readings fit the uncanny birth and religious allusions, and both have filmmaker support. Neither is established as the one canonical identity. Calling the baby Lucifer reincarnated, for example, would go beyond what the film or the cited comments confirm.

An antithetical resurrection figure?
Barrett also suggested a deliberately inverted counterpart to a resurrection figure: “I think we would certainly say that the baby is a kind of antithetical resurrection figure, you know, too, maybe Christ, and so maybe then that would be, like, the direct interpretation of that. But I actually don’t know.” His hesitation matters. The phrase offers another way to interpret the imagery, not a settled explanation.
Why does Azrael smile?
The smile is visible; its precise cause is not explained. Barrett said the filmmakers tried to humanize the creatures and that the “goat baby” becomes, in a sense, adorable. That supports an unsettling reading in which Azrael is receptive to the child, even though its appearance and the ritual surrounding the birth remain frightening. It does not establish exactly what she feels or why.

Katz described the film as focused on Azrael’s feelings and change, while accepting that some performance beats in the finale are mysterious. In an interview about the film, he said, “I always try to prioritize like the character because I think everything else is just trappings. I think it’s really about character.” The smile can therefore be read as a sign that Azrael’s relationship to what has happened has changed, without treating that reading as a confirmed account of her inner state.

Azrael is a post-apocalyptic survival horror film directed by E.L. Katz and written by Simon Barrett. Its central storytelling is dialogue-free: Samara Weaving plays Azrael, a woman hunted by a cult that intends to use her in a ritual. The Overlook Film Festival’s 2024 program describes the film as a dialogue-free survival story; the official Shudder synopsis quoted by ComingSoon says the community recaptures Azrael and plans to sacrifice her to pacify an evil in the wilderness.
