Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For one YouTube Live stream, plan for about 10 Mbps of stable upload at 720p, 18 Mbps at 1080p30, or 22 Mbps at 1080p60. These practical targets apply YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom to its H.264 live bitrates; they are planning figures, not guarantees of a stable connection. A prerecorded video does not need less live-stream bandwidth just because it is prerecorded, and running for 24 hours does not multiply the Mbps required.
How much upload speed do the stream settings need?
Start with the stream’s resolution, frame rate, and encoder bitrate. YouTube’s current H.264 live-stream guidance recommends the bitrates below. The upload targets are rounded planning figures that leave roughly 20% room above the stream bitrate.
| YouTube Live output | Recommended H.264 stream bitrate | Practical available upload target |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps | About 10 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | About 18 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | About 22 Mbps |
The bitrate is the data rate sent by the live encoder; the target is sustained upload capacity available to that encoder. YouTube says, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Its guidance does not prescribe a single formula for applying that margin, so these targets are rounded estimates rather than exact thresholds. The figures use H.264 as a clear planning baseline; requirements can differ with codec and selected settings. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations and its network guidance.
Is 10 Mbps upload enough?
It is a reasonable target for a single 720p stream at the H.264 bitrate above, if that capacity is actually available to the encoder and remains stable. It is not a comfortable target for 1080p30: use about 18 Mbps of available upload for that output. A broadband plan’s advertised speed is not necessarily the speed the encoder can use at a busy hour.

Does a prerecorded 24/7 stream need less internet speed?
No, not while it is being broadcast as a live stream. Whether the pictures originate from a camera or a prerecorded file, the live encoder sends a stream at its configured bitrate to YouTube. The stream’s resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate determine the network demand—not whether the video was recorded earlier or whether its subject is children’s programming. The cited YouTube guidance establishes no separate bandwidth requirement for children’s streams.
A 24/7 schedule does not mean multiplying the bitrate by 24. Mbps measures a rate, not a daily data total. Continuous broadcasting does, however, make consistency, power, encoder uptime, monitoring, and a recovery plan more consequential.

Measure the upload the encoder can really use
- Choose the intended output. Decide whether the stream will be 720p or 1080p and whether it will run at 30 or 60 fps. Confirm the encoder’s codec and bitrate; use YouTube’s live bitrate guidance as a starting point.
- Test upload, not download. YouTube notes that inbound/download speed is often higher than outbound/upload speed. Run an upload speed test where the encoder will be connected. YouTube recommends running a speed test to test upload bitrate.
- Test under representative conditions. Repeat at a time when household or workplace use is typical, with the encoder connected as it will be during the broadcast. Other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream.
- Run a test stream before committing to 24/7. Use representative audio and movement, then watch the stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health; a single speed-test result cannot guarantee continuous stability.
A connection may be shared, congested, or interrupted, even if its advertised upload rate is higher than the target. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance provides setup context, while its streaming tips address upload capacity and network reliability.
Do not confuse live bitrate with video-file upload settings
Uploading a prerecorded file to YouTube and sending a live stream are different network tasks. YouTube’s separate file-upload recommendations include encoding rates—for example, 8 Mbps for 1080p standard-frame-rate SDR video—but that is not the broadband upload target for a 1080p live broadcast. For a live feed, use the live encoder recommendations above, not the file-upload table. See YouTube’s recommended video upload encoding settings.

Troubleshoot an unstable or interrupted stream
- Upload test is below the target: Lower the live output resolution, frame rate, or encoder bitrate, then test again. Do not assume a higher download speed solves a low upload rate.
- Speed test meets the target but stream health is poor: Check at a busier time and reduce competing uploads or other network use. A shared connection may not leave the tested capacity available to the encoder.
- The stream works briefly, then drops: Monitor Live Control Room stream-health messages during a realistic test. A brief speed test does not establish that the connection will stay stable throughout a continuous run; investigate interruptions and plan for recovery.
- Only the prerecorded file upload seems slow: That is a file-transfer issue, not the live stream’s ongoing bitrate requirement. Keep the two tasks and YouTube’s separate settings tables distinct.
YouTube’s guidance supports testing and monitoring but does not specify a required ISP plan, router, or cable for this use. A wired connection may be a practical setup choice where available, but it cannot raise the upload capacity supplied by the internet connection.
