To relay an internet radio station on YouTube with a moving waveform, combine the station’s audio with a video scene that visualizes that same audio, then send the finished feed to YouTube Live through an encoder. OBS offers a graphical setup; FFmpeg can run a command-line pipeline, including on an optional always-on server. Before going live, confirm you have the necessary rights and that your channel is eligible. YouTube may not save a continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours as an archive.
What you need before starting
YouTube Live receives a video feed, so an audio-only radio stream needs a visual layer. For a waveform, that layer must analyze or receive the same audio that is being broadcast. A third-party guide published May 29, 2026 describes using an OBS Browser source with a local HTML visualizer, but it does not establish that a particular visualizer or configuration is compatible or production-ready. Treat that approach as an example, not an official YouTube recommendation.
- The internet radio stream URL and permission to relay its audio.
- A video scene with a background and a waveform visualizer connected to the broadcast audio.
- An encoder such as OBS or FFmpeg, configured to send the combined audio and video feed to YouTube Live.
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains channel access requirements.
Confirm rights and YouTube eligibility
Do not assume that an internet radio stream is free to rebroadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require the broadcaster to have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including music rights. The YouTube livestream terms state that broadcasters represent and warrant that they have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects content that remains in the stream, it may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. A license alone may not prevent an interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may also need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. If you cannot verify that the station’s rights cover your planned use and territories, do not relay it.

Choose your setup: OBS or FFmpeg
| Decision | OBS on a computer | FFmpeg on a server |
|---|---|---|
| How you work | Graphical scene composition and interactive controls. | Command-line configuration and process management. |
| Where it runs | A computer with a desktop session; the machine and session must remain available while you use this method. | An always-on VPS is one option for unattended operation, but a VPS is not a YouTube requirement. |
| Waveform approach | A Browser source displaying a local HTML visualizer is one proposed approach. Compatibility is not established for a specific visualizer. | Requires an appropriate video composition or filter pipeline. A verified waveform command is not established here. |
| Trade-off | Easier to inspect visually; depends on the computer and session staying available. | Can run in the background, but requires command-line setup and monitoring. |
There are no established comparative uptime, CPU-usage or VPS-cost figures for these approaches. Choose based on whether you prefer an interactive desktop workflow or are prepared to configure and supervise a server process.
Build and start the OBS stream
- Verify the channel. Confirm that the channel is verified and has not had a live-stream restriction during the preceding 90 days.
- Create a live stream in YouTube Studio. In the YouTube Live control room, create or schedule the broadcast and select the encoder workflow. Follow the current YouTube instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream key securely. A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Treat it as a password: do not publish it, share it with unauthorized people or include it in public screenshots. Use YouTube’s stream-key controls and rotate the key if it is exposed.
- Make an OBS scene. Add a background image or video, then add a Browser source for a local HTML waveform visualizer if you have one. Configure the visualizer to analyze the radio audio being sent to YouTube; a waveform that is not connected to that audio will not accurately represent it. The cited implementation guide proposes this arrangement but does not verify a specific visualizer or its setup.
- Add the station audio. Configure OBS to receive the radio stream as an audio input. The exact method depends on the stream format and your operating system; verify that the input is audible in OBS and reaches the visualizer before broadcasting.
- Set the output using current YouTube guidance. Configure OBS for YouTube and use YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate and resolution guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS and advises choosing settings that the available connection can sustain reliably. There is no single bitrate established here as optimal for every resolution, frame rate or connection.
- Test privately or unlisted before a public launch. Confirm that both the radio audio and waveform appear in the YouTube preview, then start the broadcast and monitor the encoder and YouTube control room for dropped frames, disconnects or copyright notices.
Run the FFmpeg route
At a high level, FFmpeg must read the station’s audio, combine it with a video source that renders a waveform, encode the combined feed, and publish it to YouTube. An image or looping video can supply the background, but a waveform requires an audio-reactive visualization stage as well. The third-party implementation guide describes this architecture but does not provide a verified, production-ready waveform command. Do not copy an arbitrary command without checking it against your FFmpeg build, input format and current YouTube settings.

- Everything in the box: Includes Pro Tools Intro+, Ableton Live Lite, Cubase LE, and Hitmaker Expansion: a suite of essential effects, powerful software instruments, and easy-to-use mastering tools
- Confirm the radio stream URL works and that relaying it is authorized.
- Choose a waveform-rendering method that can analyze the same audio input used by FFmpeg. Verify its compatibility and output independently; no specific plugin, filter chain or command is established here.
- Configure the video and audio encoding, output protocol and YouTube stream key using current YouTube encoder settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS and settings your connection can sustain.
- Run a short test and confirm the audio, moving waveform and YouTube preview are all correct before leaving the process unattended.
- If using a VPS, supervise the process and arrange monitoring and restart behavior appropriate to your setup. A server can remove the need for a desktop session, but it does not by itself guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
Plan for a 24/7 broadcast and its archive
Continuous live delivery and a complete replay are different things. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams under 12 hours; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If an archive matters, keep a local recording and plan how to divide or manage long broadcasts rather than relying on a single continuous YouTube replay. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
For an unattended DIY setup, test the entire chain for longer than a brief preview: radio source, waveform, encoder, network connection and YouTube ingest. Monitor whether the source station itself disconnects or changes its stream URL. Those are separate failure points from YouTube ingest, and an encoder cannot forward audio it no longer receives.

Troubleshooting
YouTube does not accept the encoder connection
- Check that the channel is eligible, the stream is active in YouTube Studio, and the encoder has the correct current stream key.
- Confirm the protocol and output settings against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. Keep the stream key private; replace it if it has been exposed.
The video plays but the waveform is static or absent
- Check that the visualizer receives the same audio input that is being broadcast, rather than a different desktop or microphone source.
- Confirm that the Browser source or chosen rendering pipeline loads and updates in the encoder preview. A static background alone does not create an audio-reactive waveform.
The stream is interrupted for copyright
- Review the rights for every track and territory in the relay; permission to listen to a station does not establish rebroadcast rights.
- If you have a license, ask the relevant rights holder whether your YouTube channel must be allowlisted through Content ID. YouTube may still interrupt a licensed stream if it is not allowlisted.
The archive is incomplete or missing
- Do not rely on YouTube to capture a broadcast that runs beyond 12 hours. Keep a local recording if you need a replay and plan archive segments.
