What Trump said about Musk’s criticism
During an Oval Office press exchange, a reporter asked whether it bothered Trump that Musk had criticized a deal Trump had announced publicly. The reporter’s question identified the subject as Musk’s criticism of Stargate, an AI infrastructure project announced earlier that week.
Trump replied, “No, it doesn’t,” and said Musk hated one of the people involved in the deal. After questions about whether Trump had spoken with Musk, Trump said he had spoken with the people involved and described them as “very, very smart people.” He then repeated that one person was someone Musk happened to hate, before saying: “But I have certain hatreds of people too——” The official transcript of the January 23, 2025, exchange records the words and their immediate context.
Who Trump meant by “one of the people”
The transcript does not name the person Trump said Musk disliked. Contemporaneous Associated Press coverage identified that person as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. That identification is AP’s account of the reference, rather than a name stated in the transcript. AP’s report on the exchange and Stargate provides that context.

What the remark does—and does not—establish
Trump’s answer was narrow: he said Musk’s criticism did not bother him and attributed it to personal dislike of someone involved. He did not explain whom he meant by his own “hatreds,” what those feelings involved, or whether he intended a comparison beyond the moment’s exchange.
The transcript therefore does not establish that Trump considered all of Musk’s behavior acceptable. The headline’s phrase “bizarre behavior” is a characterization; in the recorded question, the specific conduct at issue was Musk’s criticism of Stargate.
