Donald Trump announced on February 7, 2025, that he would become chair of the Kennedy Center board. He was formally appointed as a trustee on February 11, then elected chair by the reconstituted board on February 12. Those were three separate steps—not a unilateral appointment of himself as chair. Later court rulings addressed the Center’s name, board voting rights and a proposed closure.
What happened when Trump announced he would be chair?
On February 7, 2025, Trump said he would remove multiple trustees, including the board’s chair, and named himself as the future chair. The Kennedy Center said at the time that it had received no official White House communication. It also said the board appoints its own chair, while noting that the statute did not prevent a new administration from replacing trustees. The Center described such action against its board as unprecedented.
The formal sequence matters because announcing an intention to take the role was not the same as being appointed to the board or elected chair.
When was Trump appointed and elected chair?
| Date | What happened | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| February 7, 2025 | Trump announced that he would become chair and said he would terminate multiple trustees. | An announcement of his plan; the Center said it had not received official notice at that point. |
| February 11, 2025 | A White House appointment announcement named Trump a trustee. | His trustee term was set to expire September 1, 2030; this was an appointment to the board, not the board chair election. |
| February 12, 2025 | The reconstituted board elected Trump chair. | This was the board’s formal election of its chair. |
Why does the Kennedy Center’s governance matter?
The Kennedy Center is established by federal statute as both a performing arts institution and a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy. In its May 29, 2026 opinion, the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia described the board’s responsibilities as including programming, memorial functions and maintenance. That statutory role became central to later disputes over the institution’s name and whether it could close.

Could the board change the Kennedy Center’s name?
No, not by acting alone, according to the district court’s May 29, 2026 ruling. The board had decided in December 2025 to rename the institution “Trump Kennedy Center” and new lettering was installed. The court held that the Center’s statutory name could not be changed unilaterally by its board. Judge Christopher R. Cooper wrote: “Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it.”
The same opinion concluded that the statute did not allow the board to strip ex officio trustees of their voting rights. These are the court’s legal holdings, not merely claims made in the political dispute. A separate introduced House resolution, H. Res. 973, recites events and makes statements about the board and name change; it is not enacted law or a judicial ruling.
Did the court permanently block a Kennedy Center closure?
No. The May 29, 2026 opinion preliminarily enjoined the specific closure decision made at the board’s March 16, 2026 meeting, finding the board’s decision-making inadequate on the record before it. The court did not categorically prohibit closure. It left open the possibility that the board could reconsider and proceed after independently and prudently weighing its statutory obligations. The opinion also said the Center could continue planned capital repair work.
The court’s account noted a $257 million congressional appropriation for capital improvements and repairs. That figure describes funding for repair and improvement work; it is not the total cost of a proposed renovation or closure plan.

Where do the Kennedy Center Honors stand?
As of an Associated Press report dated October 2, 2026, the board had voted to close the venue, and the 2026 Kennedy Center Honors were scheduled for Capital One Arena on December 7. AP reported that details about the Honors were limited. Those are dated venue plans, not a guarantee that the event arrangements or closure decision cannot change. The report came after the court’s May ruling, which blocked the specific closure decision then under review while allowing for reconsideration.
