Memorial Day weekend 2025, May 24–26, offered a useful mix of theatrical spectacles, compact streaming series, documentaries, true crime, and returning television. The biggest choices were Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and the live-action Lilo & Stitch in theaters, while Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV+, Max, and network television supplied options for viewers staying home.
This is an archived guide to that 2025 weekend—not a current August 2026 availability list. Streaming catalogs, digital-rental windows, theatrical runs, and subscription requirements can change by country and date.

The original weekend guide described nine new or newly featured choices across several formats; they were not all “new streaming movies.” Three were theatrical films, five were streaming or television programs, and the final item was a catch-up recommendation involving established FBI shows.
1. Best big-screen thriller: Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
If the goal was a theatrical event, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning was the obvious first choice. The eighth film in the series brought back Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt for another high-risk mission involving the artificial-intelligence threat known as the Entity and the rogue operative Gabriel. It opened in theaters on May 23, 2025.

The appeal was not simply the title’s franchise history. The film was marketed around large-scale practical action and Cruise’s continuing willingness to perform demanding stunts. It was positioned as the concluding chapter of the main series, although that did not necessarily rule out future spin-offs or other franchise extensions.
For viewers who had missed earlier installments, this was also a natural reason to organize a marathon. The first seven films were subsequently available through Prime Video-related purchase or subscription options, depending on the title and the viewer’s account configuration. The film later received physical 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD editions, so it also became a reasonable home-library purchase rather than only a theatrical recommendation.
For a physical-media collection, see the Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning 4K Blu-ray option, while remembering that prices, stock, editions, and retailer availability are volatile.
2. Best family theater pick: Lilo & Stitch
Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch was the family-friendly counterweight to Mission: Impossible. It opened theatrically on May 23, 2025, and runs approximately 1 hour 52 minutes. Disney describes it as a PG science-fiction family adventure about Lilo, a lonely Hawaiian girl, and Experiment 626, the fugitive alien better known as Stitch, whose arrival helps force a fractured family back together.

The story retained the central themes of family, belonging, and an unruly extraterrestrial learning how to live with people, while translating the animated property into live action.
The best way to turn this into a fuller family movie night was a comparison double feature: watch the 2025 adaptation alongside the original animated Lilo & Stitch. Disney later identified digital availability and an August 26 Blu-ray release for the live-action film. If you prefer to own rather than wait for a catalog window, distinguish the 2025 Lilo & Stitch Blu-ray from the separate physical release of the 2002 animated film.
3. Best quick binge: Sirens
Sirens was the weekend’s most contained binge: Netflix’s limited series consists of five episodes. It stars Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock, and Kevin Bacon in a story that combines sibling tension, wealth satire, mystery, and an unnervingly luxurious seaside setting.
The premise follows a younger sister who goes looking for answers about her sibling’s unusually close relationship with a billionaire employer at an extravagant estate. That setup gives the series a clear engine without requiring a long, multi-season commitment. Viewers looking for a darkly comic mystery rather than a conventional family drama were the natural audience.

Netflix’s official description emphasizes the questions surrounding the sisters and the billionaire’s world. Going in without reading an ending explanation was advisable: the series is built around shifting power relationships and revelations. For a holiday weekend, its five-episode structure made it easier to finish than a sprawling prestige drama.
4. Best returning mystery drama: Nine Perfect Strangers season 2
Hulu’s second season of Nine Perfect Strangers brought back Nicole Kidman as Masha, the enigmatic wellness retreat leader. The new story moved the retreat to the Austrian Alps and introduced another group of guests whose personal problems become entangled with Masha’s methods.

The season premiered on May 21, 2025, with two episodes. After that, Hulu released one new episode weekly. That schedule mattered: it was a returning series to follow, not a complete season available for a single weekend binge.
The Alpine setting and new group of guests offered a fresh entry point, but viewers unfamiliar with the first season would likely get more from beginning there. It suited audiences who wanted a glossy, star-led mystery drama with psychological tension, an ensemble cast, and a continuing weekly conversation.
Hulu’s official press information and viewer guide documented the two-episode launch and weekly rollout.
5. Best sports documentary: UNTOLD: The Fall of Favre
For documentary viewers, UNTOLD: The Fall of Favre was the most directly relevant pick. The Netflix film examines Brett Favre’s public legacy through his football career, celebrity, and controversies surrounding his life away from the field. Netflix classifies it as a 2025 TV-MA documentary.
The film’s central subject is the tension between sporting achievement and public scrutiny: how an athlete’s reputation is created, protected, challenged, and reassessed when controversies become part of the story. That makes it more than a conventional career retrospective. It is aimed at viewers interested in the machinery of sports fame as much as in game highlights.
Because the documentary discusses allegations and disputed matters, it is best approached as an examination of the controversy and its public consequences—not as a reason to repeat every claim as independently established fact. Netflix’s official title page and trailer page provide the platform’s description and framing.

Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie was listed as an Investigation Discovery true-crime special scheduled to stream on Max on May 26, 2025. It examines the case of Sherri Papini, including her fabricated-abduction conviction and her account that she hid an affair because she feared her husband’s reaction.
This item requires more qualification than the others. The schedule and platform wording above belong to the original May 2025 listing; the available research did not include a directly accessible official Max or Investigation Discovery program page confirming every detail. Current availability should therefore be checked rather than assumed.

- More streaming, less searching: With personalized picks right on your Home Screen, quick access to the sports and entertainment you watch most, and fast and easy search in one place—the days of endless scrolling are over.
It is also important to keep attribution clear. The careful formulation is that the special examines Papini’s account and the events surrounding the case. A recommendation should not present disputed explanations or allegations as newly verified facts.
7. Best cringe comedy: Friendship
Friendship offered a very different theatrical experience from the weekend’s franchise films. Tim Robinson plays Craig, a socially isolated middle-aged man who becomes intensely enthusiastic when Paul Rudd’s character, Austin, appears interested in becoming his friend. The film opened widely on May 23, 2025.
This was not a conventional feel-good friendship comedy. Its selling point was escalating awkwardness, social misreading, and discomfort—the kind of cringe humor that can be hilarious for one viewer and nearly unbearable for another. It was the offbeat alternative for people who had already seen the major studio choices or wanted something deliberately strange.
Choose it when the group is in the mood for embarrassment and tonal risk, not when everyone wants a safe, uplifting comedy. That distinction is more useful than describing it simply as a movie about friendship.
8. Best adventure stream: Fountain of Youth
Apple TV+ premiered Fountain of Youth globally on May 23, 2025. John Krasinski and Natalie Portman play estranged siblings who reunite for a global expedition to find the mythological Fountain of Youth. Guy Ritchie directed the film, and James Vanderbilt wrote it.
The ingredients are deliberately accessible: a recognizable cast, international locations, a family relationship that needs repairing, and a legendary object that functions as the adventure’s central MacGuffin. It was a strong home-viewing alternative to going to the theater for Mission: Impossible—especially for subscribers who wanted an action-adventure film without committing to a series.

The final recommendation was not a new series launch. It was a catch-up item for viewers already following the FBI television universe: the season finales of FBI: International and FBI: Most Wanted had aired during the week, while the original FBI was renewed for another season.

That makes this choice useful only for established franchise viewers. Someone looking for a standalone weekend premiere would be better served by one of the films or limited series above. Someone already invested in the characters and interconnected procedural format, however, could use the weekend to catch up on both finales and then continue with the original series.
How to choose your Memorial Day weekend watch
- Want spectacle? Go to the theater for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
- Watching with children? Choose the live-action Lilo & Stitch, possibly paired with the animated original.
- Need something you can finish quickly? Try Netflix’s five-episode Sirens.
- Prefer a weekly mystery? Start Nine Perfect Strangers season 2, remembering that only two episodes had premiered.
- Want a documentary? Choose UNTOLD: The Fall of Favre for a sports-and-public-legacy story.
- Looking for true crime? Check the historical Max listing for Sherri Papini: Caught in the Lie, with the availability and claims carefully qualified.

- Prefer an at-home adventure? Watch Fountain of Youth on Apple TV+.

For any of these titles, confirm the service, episode count, subscription requirement, rental or purchase status, and regional availability before watching. The recommendations above describe the original May 24–26, 2025 window, not guaranteed availability today.
