- The strongest movie and documentary choices included The Idea of You, Turtles All the Way Down, The Iron Claw, The Beach Boys, and Jim Henson Idea Man.
- Dark Matter premiered on May 8, 2024 with two episodes on Apple TV+, then released one episode every Wednesday through June 26 rather than arriving as a complete binge.
- The Idea of You and Turtles All the Way Down were adaptations with natural book companions: Robinne Lee’s novel and John Green’s novel, respectively.

Which May 2024 release is best for each mood?
What is the best returning comedy in May 2024?
Hacks season 3 on Max is the clearest choice for viewers who want a sharp, character-driven comedy built around established chemistry. The May 2 return continues the prestige-comedy profile that made Deborah Vance and Ava’s professional and personal friction the central attraction.
What is the best romance movie streaming in May 2024?
The Idea of You is the month’s most direct romance recommendation. The Prime Video film arrived on May 2 and centers on Solène, played by Anne Hathaway, and Hayes, played by Nicholas Galitzine, in a contemporary love story, according to Amazon’s official announcement.
If you want to read the source material, The Idea of You book by Robinne Lee is the clearest companion to the Prime Video romance. Macmillan’s publisher page identifies Lee’s novel and describes its connection to the film; reading the novel is optional, not a prerequisite for watching the adaptation.
What is the best high-concept science-fiction show in May 2024?
Dark Matter is the strongest science-fiction choice for viewers who enjoy alternate realities, identity questions, and a mystery that rewards weekly discussion. The Apple TV+ series is based on Blake Crouch’s novel of the same name and began with two episodes on May 8.

Turtles All the Way Down is the Max pick for a more intimate YA adaptation rather than a franchise spectacle. TV Guide lists the film among Max’s May 2 releases. The film and John Green’s source novel should be treated as separate experiences; the available research does not support claiming that the adaptation is identical to the book.
Readers who want additional interiority and background can choose the Turtles All the Way Down book by John Green. Penguin Random House’s product page lists a 320-page Penguin Books paperback edition with ISBN 9780525555377. Green described the long development of the novel by writing, “I’ve been working on Turtles All the Way Down for years, and I’m so excited to share it with readers this October.”
What is the best Star Wars animated event in May 2024?
Star Wars: Tales of the Empire is the Disney+ choice for viewers who want franchise lore in a compact animated format. The six-episode series premiered with every episode available on May 4 and follows Morgan Elsbeth and Barriss Offee along separate paths shaped by the Galactic Empire, according to Disney+’s official May schedule.
The May 6, 2024 Rotten Tomatoes guide displayed an 88% Tomatometer for the limited series: 88% — Rotten Tomatoes, 2024. That figure is a historical snapshot from the May 6 guide, not a claim about a score that remains unchanged.

The May 6, 2024 Rotten Tomatoes guide displayed an 89% Tomatometer for The Beach Boys: 89% — Rotten Tomatoes, 2024. The figure belongs to that dated guide and should not be presented as a current score without a current source.
What is the best documentary about a creative life in May 2024?
Jim Henson Idea Man is the Disney+ pick for viewers interested in the creative life behind influential television and puppetry. Disney’s official schedule places the film’s premiere on May 31 and describes Henson’s path from early television puppetry through Sesame Street and The Muppet Show.

What’s new on Netflix in May 2024?
Netflix was the broadest May 2024 destination for variety rather than a single dominant prestige title. The slate covered comedy, reality and live-event programming, international series, documentaries, and star-led original films.
- A Man in Full brought a star-led original series to the month’s schedule.
- John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s in L.A. began its live-event comedy run on May 3.
- Unfrosted arrived as a Netflix film on May 3.
- Atlas offered a star-led original science-fiction film.
- Bodkin added an international-flavored mystery series.
- Mother of the Bride supplied a lighter romantic film option.
These titles come from Boston.com’s May 2024 schedule. Netflix therefore worked best for viewers who wanted to browse across formats and genres instead of committing to one flagship series.
What’s new on Max in May 2024?
Max had the strongest concentrated mix of prestige comedy, emotionally serious drama, and recognizable adaptations. Hacks season 3 and Turtles All the Way Down both arrived on May 2, while The Iron Claw and Pretty Little Liars: Summer School rounded out the month’s notable Max choices.
Hacks is the best Max starting point for comedy and character work. Turtles All the Way Down suits viewers looking for a YA adaptation with a more inward focus. The Iron Claw is the better choice for a heavy sports drama, while Pretty Little Liars: Summer School serves viewers who want a returning teen mystery format. The May 2 dates and Max lineup are listed in TV Guide’s May calendar.
What’s new on Hulu in May 2024?
Hulu’s May highlights favored documentaries, nonfiction, and less obvious film choices over major franchise releases. The distinctive recommendations included The Contestant, Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story, Birth/Rebirth, and Black Twitter: A People’s History.

What’s new on Prime Video in May 2024?
Prime Video’s strongest May choices covered three distinct needs: a contemporary romance, a returning high-concept series, and a spectacle-oriented documentary.
- The Idea of You premiered on May 2 and is the best Prime Video choice for a star-led romance centered on Solène and Hayes.
- Outer Range season 2 returned on May 16 with its unusual science-fiction-western premise, making it the pick for viewers who want a continuing mystery rather than a conventional Western.
- The Blue Angels arrived on May 23 as a spectacle-oriented documentary choice.
Amazon’s official Prime Video announcement confirms the May 2 and May 23 film dates, while TV Guide identifies Outer Range season 2 as a May 16 return. Prime Video was the best fit for viewers who wanted either a focused romance or an unusual returning genre series.
What’s new on Apple TV+ in May 2024?
Apple TV+ was the strongest May service for viewers who prefer a smaller slate of high-concept serialized originals and are willing to follow a weekly release. Dark Matter was the central launch, supported by Acapulco season 3, Hollywood Con Queen, and The Big Cigar.
Apple TV Press stated: “Dark Matter makes its global debut on Apple TV+ on May 8, 2024 with the first two episodes, followed by new episodes every Wednesday through June 26.” The statement appears in Apple’s official Dark Matter announcement.

Star Wars: Tales of the Empire was an all-at-once six-episode premiere, while Dark Matter used a two-episode launch followed by weekly episodes through June 26. The release model changes how much time a viewer needs to plan.
| Series | Release model | What it means for viewers |
|---|---|---|
| Star Wars: Tales of the Empire | All six episodes on May 4 | Can be watched in one sitting or over a weekend |
| Dark Matter | Two episodes on May 8, then one every Wednesday through June 26 | Designed for a multi-week mystery and discussion cycle |

How do The Idea of You and Turtles All the Way Down compare with their books?
The Idea of You and Turtles All the Way Down are both May 2 Max-or-Prime Video film choices with source novels, but they serve different reading and viewing moods.
| Adaptation | Streaming film | Source material | Choose the film if you want | Choose the book if you want |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Idea of You | Prime Video, May 2; contemporary romance | Robinne Lee’s novel | A film-length, star-led romance with Anne Hathaway and Nicholas Galitzine | The source story and a longer reading experience |
| Turtles All the Way Down | Max, May 2; YA adaptation | John Green’s novel | An intimate film-length coming-of-age adaptation | More interiority and the full novel experience |
The publisher information supports the companion-book recommendation without making a claim that either adaptation is scene-for-scene identical to its source. The Macmillan page for Robinne Lee’s The Idea of You and the Penguin Random House page for John Green’s Turtles All the Way Down are the useful reference points for readers who want to continue from screen to page.
What were the other notable streaming releases in May 2024?
Viewers already subscribed to Paramount+ or Peacock had two strong secondary series recommendations. Evil season 4 was a Paramount+ highlight on May 23, while We Are Lady Parts season 2 was a Peacock highlight on May 30, according to TV Guide’s monthly guide.
These titles make sense as service-specific choices rather than reasons to add another subscription solely for one show. The month’s wider pattern was unusually broad: viewers could find a notable comedy, adaptation, documentary, returning season, or franchise entry across nearly every major U.S. platform.
How should readers interpret this May 2024 streaming guide?
This is a historical U.S. release snapshot, not a claim that every title remains on the named service in August 2026. Streaming catalogs and licensing arrangements can change, and the official Disney+ schedule explicitly says, “Library title availability varies by region and is subject to change.” Check the service listing in the reader’s country before planning a viewing night.
