This is a U.S.-oriented guide to the major December 2024 launches. It records where and when these titles originally premiered in December 2024; streaming catalogs, regional rights, subscription terms, and theatrical availability may have changed since then.
The December 2024 shortlist
December offered more than a pile of seasonal romances. The strongest lineup moved between holiday thrillers, spy drama, returning franchise television, family-friendly science fiction, adult superhero animation, comfort viewing, and filmmaker-driven horror.
| If you want… | Watch… | Why it belongs on the list |
|---|---|---|
| A quick, accessible movie | Carry-On — Netflix, December 13 | A Christmas Eve airport thriller with Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman, built around a clear deadline and immediate stakes. |
| A seasonal show without cozy holiday tone | Black Doves — Netflix, December 5 | A six-episode Christmas-set spy thriller led by Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw. |
| A family adventure | Star Wars: Skeleton Crew — Disney+, December 2 | A coming-of-age galaxy adventure that can work as a gateway for viewers who prefer discovery to dense franchise continuity. |
| Adult comic-book animation | Creature Commandos — Max, December 5 | James Gunn’s grotesque, irreverent DC team series and the first title launched under the new DC Universe. |
| A major post-Christmas event | Squid Game Season 2 — Netflix, December 26 | Gi-hun returns to confront the organization behind the deadly competition. |
| A theatrical horror experience | Nosferatu — U.S. theaters, December 25 | Robert Eggers’ atmospheric new adaptation of the classic vampire story. |
The labels above are editorial recommendations, not an objective ranking. The right first choice depends on whether you want momentum, comfort, family viewing, franchise spectacle, or a film best experienced on a large screen.

Best movies and shows by platform
Netflix
Carry-On: the best no-homework December thriller
Carry-On is the easiest recommendation for viewers who want something entertaining immediately. Taron Egerton plays Ethan Kopek, a TSA officer working on Christmas Eve who is blackmailed by a mysterious traveler, played by Jason Bateman, into allowing a dangerous item onto a flight. The airport setting, holiday deadline, recognizable cast, and straightforward premise give the film a strong built-in engine: Ethan has limited time, limited information, and a problem unfolding inside a tightly controlled public space.
It is a useful alternative to a traditional Christmas romance. The seasonal atmosphere is present, but the movie is primarily a high-concept thriller. Choose it when you want an uncomplicated evening watch with tension and forward movement rather than a slow-burn character drama.
Netflix later reported that Carry-On opened at number one on its English-film chart with 42 million views in its first reporting week, calling it the service’s biggest film opening of 2024 at that point. That is a platform-reported popularity measure, not an independent assessment of quality, but it confirms that the movie became one of the month’s most broadly watched streaming releases.
Black Doves: Christmas espionage instead of Christmas comfort
Created and written by Joe Barton, Black Doves follows Helen Webb, a politician’s wife who secretly works as a spy. After her lover is murdered, her old friend Sam Young, an assassin played by Ben Whishaw, is brought in to protect her while she investigates the killing. Keira Knightley plays Helen, with Sarah Lancashire also starring.

The Christmas setting gives the series atmosphere without turning it into a holiday special. This is a spy thriller about political secrets, friendship, sacrifice, and violence in a Christmas-season London. It is the best choice on the list for viewers who want seasonal visuals but would rather watch conspiracies, assassins, and divided loyalties than fireplaces and sentimental reunions.
The season consists of six episodes, making it a relatively compact commitment. It is also a better fit for viewers who enjoy character relationships within an action story than for anyone looking specifically for a light festive binge.

- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.

Squid Game Season 2: save it for after Christmas
The second season arrived on Netflix on December 26, immediately after the holiday. Lee Jung-jae returned as Gi-hun, whose decision to confront the organization behind the games drives the continuation. The season is best treated as a major returning television event rather than an entry point for new viewers.
Watch Season 1 first. Season 2 depends on the original show’s characters, rules, moral conflicts, and discoveries, and even a spoiler-free recommendation cannot explain the new season properly without giving away the first. It is also the least suitable pick here for casual family viewing: the series is violent and disturbing, and its competition framework remains central to the experience.
Optional viewing-night extra: Fans comparing a Squid Game green tracksuit or other themed apparel should check the current seller, licensing information, sizing, materials, and return policy rather than assuming every listing is officially licensed.
Virgin River Season 6: the comfort-viewing choice
Season 6 of Virgin River is the safest selection for viewers who want a sentimental, small-town relationship drama. The season focuses on Mel and Jack’s wedding preparations, including the events leading to the ceremony, bachelor and bachelorette celebrations, the rehearsal dinner, and new complications.
All 10 episodes were available when the season premiered on December 19, making it a straightforward binge for established viewers. It is not a good starting point for newcomers: the wedding story relies heavily on the relationships and unresolved developments built across the earlier seasons. Begin with Season 1 if you are discovering the series for the first time.
Other Netflix holiday choices
Netflix’s 2024 holiday slate provided a broader range of seasonal viewing beyond the headline releases. That Christmas was the clearest family option, with animated storytelling designed for holiday viewing. Other titles in the slate included Spellbound, Hot Frosty, Meet Me Next Christmas, Our Little Secret, The Merry Gentlemen, Mary, and Sabrina Carpenter’s holiday special.
These are useful choices when the goal is specifically holiday programming rather than a December event series. That Christmas is the one to prioritize for animation and family viewing; the remaining options cover romantic comedy, seasonal comedy, musical, and religious or biblical subject matter.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew: the family-friendly adventure pick
Star Wars: Skeleton Crew began with a two-episode premiere on December 2. The series follows four young people who become separated from home and encounter the wider galaxy during the New Republic era. Jude Law leads the cast as Jod Na Nawood, while Nick Frost voices the droid SM-33.
This is the strongest December choice for families and for viewers who like the idea of Star Wars but do not want to begin with a continuity-heavy mythology lesson. Its coming-of-age structure makes discovery the point: the young characters are learning how large and dangerous the galaxy is at the same time that the audience is.
The two-episode premiere matters because it established the show’s opening rhythm; it was not simply a single first episode released on December 2. Parents should still consult the relevant age guidance for their household, but the series was positioned as a family-oriented adventure rather than an adult thriller.
What If…? Season 3: the MCU animation completionist pick
Marvel’s animated anthology What If…? returned for Season 3 on December 22, 2024. Jeffrey Wright’s Watcher again guides stories built around alternate versions of Marvel Cinematic Universe events. Marvel described this season as the culminating multiverse adventure for the anthology.
This is primarily for MCU-completists, animation viewers, and people who enjoy speculative variations on familiar superhero stories. It is not the best first Marvel series for someone looking for a single continuous plot. The relevant release here is Season 3 in December 2024, not Season 2’s December 2023 debut.
Max
Creature Commandos: the adult animation recommendation
Creature Commandos premiered on Max on December 5 as a seven-episode adult animated Max Original from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Animation. Written and executive produced by James Gunn, it follows a covert team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions considered too dangerous for humans.

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
This is the December pick for superhero viewers who want something more grotesque, anarchic, and irreverent than a conventional live-action comic-book production. It is explicitly adult animation, not a children’s DC series. The monstrous premise and black-comedy edge are part of the appeal, so viewers should not choose it expecting a conventional hero team or an all-ages adventure.
Episodes continued weekly after the December 5 debut, which makes the series different from the all-at-once Netflix releases in this guide. That weekly structure gives the show a more traditional event rhythm and makes it a good choice for viewers who prefer discussing one episode at a time rather than finishing a season in one sitting.
Apple TV+
Holiday programming and the limited A Charlie Brown Christmas window
Apple TV+’s official 2024 holiday lineup included Spirited, Mariah Carey specials, Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas, and Peanuts programming. These were holiday viewing options on the service, not all necessarily new December 2024 premieres.
The most date-sensitive item was A Charlie Brown Christmas: Apple announced a free streaming window for nonsubscribers on December 14 and 15, 2024. That was a limited promotion, not permanent free availability. If you were planning a classic-special weekend during that historical month, those were the dates to note.
For viewers building a mixed holiday schedule, Apple’s lineup worked best as a short-form complement to the longer Netflix, Disney+, and Max series. It supplied classic Peanuts programming, musical specials, and familiar seasonal viewing rather than another major serialized December drama.

What requires prior viewing?
Not every December release demands preparation. Use this quick guide before choosing where to begin:
- Little or no franchise homework: Carry-On and Black Doves are the easiest starting points because they introduce their own central premises and characters.
- Light franchise familiarity helpful: Skeleton Crew is designed around a new group of young characters and can serve as a gateway for less committed Star Wars viewers, although familiarity with the setting may add context.
- Universe context recommended: Creature Commandos launches the new DC Universe, so viewers interested in its larger franchise implications may want to follow subsequent DC releases. It still has its own monster-team premise.
- Earlier seasons essential: Watch Squid Game Season 1 before Season 2, Virgin River from the beginning if you are new to the show, and the earlier seasons of What If…? if you want the full anthology and MCU context.
- Standalone theatrical choice: Nosferatu is a new adaptation of a classic vampire story and does not function as a continuation of the Netflix or Disney+ series above.
How to plan a December viewing queue
- Pick one immediate movie: Choose Carry-On if you want a self-contained thriller, or reserve Nosferatu for a theater visit if horror and visual atmosphere are the priority.
- Choose one weekly or short series: Add Black Doves for a compact spy story or Creature Commandos if you want a weekly adult-animation schedule.
- Match the household: Use Skeleton Crew for family-oriented adventure and That Christmas for animated holiday viewing. Check the age guidance for children rather than treating the word family-friendly as a universal rating.
- Save the returning shows for the right time: Start Virgin River only if you are already caught up, and hold Squid Game Season 2 until Season 1 is fresh enough to follow the story.
- Keep the dates straight: The December 25 launch of Nosferatu was theatrical, while the December 26 launch of Squid Game Season 2 was on Netflix. They were adjacent release dates, but not equivalent viewing options.
Practical availability note
The services in this guide identify where titles originally launched in the United States during December 2024: Netflix, Disney+, Max, and Apple TV+, with Nosferatu opening in theaters. That historical launch information should not be read as a guarantee that every title remains on the same service now. Check the current catalog, regional availability, subscription requirements, and theatrical listings before making plans.
No special hardware was required for these releases. If your television does not support one or more of the relevant apps, a current streaming media player can consolidate services such as Netflix, Disney+, Max, and Apple TV+ in one interface, but the choice of device does not determine access rights to any particular title.
Our final picks
For the broadest recommendation, choose Carry-On: it offers holiday atmosphere without requiring a taste for traditional Christmas movies or prior franchise knowledge. Choose Black Doves when you want a more stylish and adult seasonal series, and Skeleton Crew when the room calls for an accessible adventure. Creature Commandos is the most distinctive superhero option, while Squid Game Season 2 is the event to save for after Christmas. For a film that should be experienced differently from the streaming titles, see Nosferatu in a U.S. theater during its December 25 release window.

This guide records the original U.S. launch platform and December 2024 premiere date. Streaming catalogs and regional rights change, so check the current Netflix, Disney+, Max, or Apple TV+ catalog before watching.
Was Nosferatu a streaming release?

Do I need to watch anything before Squid Game Season 2?
Yes. Watch Season 1 first. Season 2 continues Gi-hun’s story and depends on the original season’s characters, rules, revelations, and conflicts.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: December 2024’s best all-purpose watch was Carry-On, its best seasonal series was Black Doves, its family pick was Skeleton Crew, and its biggest post-holiday event was Squid Game Season 2. For adult animation choose Creature Commandos; for a large-screen horror experience, choose Nosferatu in theaters.
