What happened to Naomi Pomeroy
The incident occurred on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at approximately 8:25 p.m. on the Willamette River near river mile 132 in Corvallis, Oregon, roughly 100 yards upstream from the Mary’s River. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office identified the victim as 49-year-old Naomi Pomeroy of Portland.
Investigators said three adults were traveling on two inner tubes that had been secured together. A paddleboard was attached to Pomeroy. The group became entangled on an exposed snag in the river, and Pomeroy was pulled underwater. The sheriff’s office reported that she was unable to free herself because of the paddleboard leash. The other two adults reached shore and were taken to a boat launch.

The official account describes the death as a drowning resulting from a river-entanglement incident during inner-tube recreation. It does not establish criminal wrongdoing, legal liability, or a product defect.
Search crews used sonar, underwater cameras, and drones, but heavy debris made the initial search difficult. Pomeroy’s body was recovered on July 17, about half a mile upstream of Hyak Park between Corvallis and Albany. The recovery location should not be confused with the original site of the incident. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office’s initial release and its recovery announcement provide the official chronology.
Naomi Pomeroy’s impact on Portland dining
Pomeroy was largely self-taught. She began with catering and underground supper-club dinners before helping establish several Portland businesses, including Gotham Coffee Shop, ClarkLewis, and Gotham Tavern, with Michael Hebb.
In 2007, she opened Beast, a 24-seat restaurant built around communal dining and a fixed, multi-course menu. The restaurant became the central expression of her cooking: French technique, carefully sourced seasonal ingredients, and a format that made the tasting-menu experience intimate and communal rather than formal and remote.

Her influence extended beyond one restaurant. Later Portland projects included Expatriate, Ripe Cooperative, and Cornet Custard. Oregon’s official arts and culture materials identified Pomeroy as an important ambassador for the state’s culinary identity and named those establishments among her notable projects. Oregon’s cultural materials document that broader contribution.
Her Top Chef Masters appearance
Pomeroy competed on Season 3 of Bravo’s Top Chef Masters, which aired in 2011. She finished in fourth place. She also appeared as a guest judge on Top Chef.
Calling Pomeroy a “Top Chef Masters star” reflects the program’s role in introducing her to a wider television audience, but “contestant” is the more precise description. She did not win the season. Bravo’s tribute and obituary report records both her Season 3 appearance and her later judging work.

Before and after television, her reputation rested primarily on her restaurants and her approach to teaching technique. National and regional publications including Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, and Portland Monthly recognized her work, while Beast gave diners a highly focused version of her cooking in a small, shared setting.

Her final Portland restaurant project
A French-inspired Portland bistro called L’Échelle, associated with Pomeroy as her final restaurant project, opened in August 2024, after her death. The opening was therefore a later development in her professional story, not an establishment operating at the time of the July river accident. Axios reported on L’Échelle’s opening and its connection to Pomeroy.
Tributes from Portland’s culinary community and national food media followed her death. Those responses reflected the range of her work: she was a chef who built restaurants, a teacher through her cookbook, a television personality, and a participant in the movement that made Portland a nationally recognized food destination.
River-safety lessons, kept separate from the official investigation
The Benton County Sheriff’s Office specifically warned against tying multiple inner tubes together and against attaching oneself to a paddleboard without a quick-release leash. Those warnings address the circumstances described by investigators; they should not be expanded into unsupported claims about what Pomeroy was or was not wearing or what would definitely have prevented the incident.

For general Oregon paddling guidance, the Oregon State Marine Board advises people to wear a properly fitted life jacket, know how to swim in river current, and carry required safety equipment. Paddlecraft generally require a U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable life jacket for each person, readily accessible. Moving water, strainers, snags, and other obstructions require judgment specific to the river and activity. The Marine Board’s paddling guidance explains those basic precautions.
The Marine Board also warns that standard ankle or leg leashes intended for flatwater or surf conditions should not be used on moving rivers, and discusses leash practices appropriate to river conditions. That general guidance should not be presented as a finding that a particular leash or equipment defect caused Pomeroy’s death. Its stand-up paddleboarding safety guidance provides the relevant distinction.
The lasting account of Pomeroy’s death is therefore both specific and limited: authorities reported that she drowned after becoming trapped in a river entanglement involving connected inner tubes, an exposed snag, and a paddleboard leash. Beyond that official account, claims about negligence, legal responsibility, or equipment failure would go beyond the verified record.
