If you’re asking, “What on earth do you go and watch next?”, the best answer depends on which part you want to keep: young friends facing danger, a supernatural mystery, time travel, or a group taking on a much bigger threat. These seven series share selected ingredients—not the same tone or format.
Netflix’s January 29, 2026 guide said all five seasons of Stranger Things were available on Netflix. Availability varies by region, and the viewing services listed in a January 2026 recommendation roundup are not a reliable guide to catalogs now.

Seven shows like Stranger Things, for different reasons
1. Archive 81: for the unsettling mystery
An archivist restoring damaged videotapes is pulled into the case of a missing documentary director and a demonic cult. Dan Turner’s work leads him toward the Visser apartment building and the strange events connected to filmmaker Melody Pendras. Pick this for analog-media unease and an investigation that grows increasingly supernatural, rather than for a copy of the Hawkins friend-group dynamic.
2. Dark: for a cerebral missing-child mystery
Netflix’s official description, reproduced by Tudum, puts the central hook this way: “A missing child sets four families on a frantic hunt for answers as they unearth a mind-bending mystery that spans three generations.” The German-language series layers time travel, conspiracy, and a supernatural phenomenon affecting a town. It is a strong choice if you want to untangle clues and connections, not simply follow a fast-moving adventure.
#1 Best Overall
- In 1980s Indiana a group of friends witness supernatural forces and government exploits. In searching for answers, they unravel a series of mysteries.
3. IT: Welcome to Derry: for horror that goes harder
This prequel to the IT films is set in Derry in 1962, where children confront Pennywise. Its young characters and small-town threat may recall one strand of Stranger Things, but the horror is grimmer and more intense. If gore or sustained horror is a poor fit for you, choose another entry on this list.
4. Paper Girls: for an ’80s group thrown into time travel
Four paper-delivery girls are caught between warring time travelers and transported into the future. The comic-book adaptation shares the period setting and young ensemble appeal, while making time travel its central engine. Tom’s Guide described it as an eight-episode series in its January 4, 2026 roundup; readers who want more of its world can also seek out the graphic novels it adapts.
Rank #2
- In 1980s Indiana a group of friends witness supernatural forces and government exploits. In searching for answers, they unravel a series of mysteries.
5. The X-Files: for investigations that keep coming
FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully investigate cases that range from conspiracy to “monster of the week” mysteries. It is the long-haul pick here: Tom’s Guide characterized the series in January 2026 as running for 11 seasons and more than 200 episodes, along with a couple of movies. That figure is the outlet’s published characterization, not a fresh episode-count audit.
6. Star Wars: Skeleton Crew: for a lighter adventure
Fern, KB, Neel, and Wim discover a hidden ship and end up lost in space, with the challenge of finding their way home. The appeal is a young group navigating danger together, but the mood is lighter and more adventure-first than the later seasons of Stranger Things. Choose it for camaraderie and spacefaring peril, not for horror.

7. The Umbrella Academy: for a messy family and enormous stakes
After their father dies, an adopted sibling team with superpowers reunites and faces world-ending events. Based on comics by Gerard Way, the series combines family conflict, snark, effects, and a more overt superhero-comedy tone. Its closest overlap with Stranger Things is the group-versus-a-large-threat setup, not its style of supernatural mystery.
Where to watch: check your region’s current catalog
A January 4, 2026 Tom’s Guide article listed Netflix for Archive 81 and The Umbrella Academy, Prime Video for Paper Girls, Hulu for The X-Files, Disney+ for Skeleton Crew, and HBO Max for IT: Welcome to Derry. Those were dated service reports, not current availability checks. Streaming catalogs change and differ by country, so search the show in the services available where you live before choosing.

Make the choice by mood and commitment
- Want the creepiest route? Choose Archive 81 for analog-media mystery, or IT: Welcome to Derry for more intense horror.
- Want to solve a puzzle? Try Dark for a dense time-travel mystery, or Paper Girls for time travel centered on a young group.
- Want cases you can dip into? The X-Files mixes ongoing conspiracy with standalone investigations and has the largest reported commitment on this list.
- Want a lighter group adventure? Go with Skeleton Crew; for family friction and superhero-scale stakes, choose The Umbrella Academy.
The seven picks do not all share the same genre, and this shortlist does not establish whether every series has a complete story or a particular renewal status. Treat the resemblance as a guide to mood, cast, or story engine—not a promise that another show will feel exactly like Stranger Things.
