Oasis Return to the U.S. After 17 Years: Soldier Field Concert Review

After 17 years away from U.S. stages, Oasis opened its Live ’25 American dates at Soldier Field with a 23-song set that balanced reunion symbolism, catalog depth and crowd-sized singalongs.

Oasis returned to the U.S. stage at Chicago’s Soldier Field on August 28, 2025, opening the American leg of the Live ’25 reunion tour with a two-hour, 23-song set. The performance made the reunion tangible: Liam and Noel Gallagher walked on holding hands, then let a familiar catalog—played with precision and little production excess—carry the night.

Why the Chicago show mattered

This was Oasis’s first U.S. concert in 17 years; the band’s previous American date was in December 2008, according to Rolling Stone’s August 30, 2025 review. It was also the first U.S. stop on the Live ’25 reunion tour. The gap between U.S. concerts is distinct from the 16 years the Chicago Sun-Times cited in describing the brothers’ split-era history.

The return carried the weight of a reunion spectacle, but the central question was whether the brothers could share a stage again and whether the songs still had force beyond nostalgia. Their hand-in-hand entrance made the reconciliation visible without resolving the years of history behind it. The Sun-Times framed the night as a “do-over” of the breakup-era past; Rolling Stone’s headline, “Oasis Finally Conquer America,” is best read as that reviewer’s verdict, not an objective measure of the band’s U.S. standing.

How the reunion played onstage

The brothers’ stage roles remained distinct. Rolling Stone’s Joseph Hudak described Liam as steady and comparatively restrained, while Noel grew more relaxed as the set went on. The Sun-Times likewise noted Liam’s showmanship alongside Noel’s calmer presence. The reviews’ impression was not of an elaborate attempt to dramatize reconciliation, but of two frontmen returning to their familiar musical roles.

The Sun-Times praised the playing as precise and the production as clean and relatively restrained. That approach put the songs and the band’s performance ahead of spectacle. Liam reportedly summed up the homecoming in his own way: “Fookin’ mega to be back in America,” as quoted by Hudak.

A 23-song set built around the catalog

The Sun-Times described a two-hour show, and both it and Rolling Stone reported a 23-song set. “Hello” opened the concert; the encore finished with “Champagne Supernova.” The sequence moved through the songs that made Oasis familiar to U.S. audiences while also giving space to tracks with particular resonance for longtime and U.K. fans.

Part of the set Songs reported by the Chicago Sun-Times
Opening “Hello”
Main set highlights “Acquiesce,” “Morning Glory,” “Some Might Say,” “Cigarettes & Alcohol,” “Supersonic,” “Talk Tonight,” “Half the World Away,” “Little by Little,” “D’You Know What I Mean?,” “Slide Away,” “Whatever,” “Live Forever” and “Rock ’n’ Roll Star”
Four-song encore “The Masterplan,” “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” “Wonderwall” and “Champagne Supernova”

Rolling Stone noted that the tour had been using the same set from night to night, so Chicago was not presented as a one-off setlist. Its more telling observation was that songs beyond the best-known U.S. hits—including “Slide Away” and “Whatever”—also drew an enthusiastic response. That reception made the show feel less like a playlist of greatest hits and more like a shared return to the breadth of the catalog.

The crowd made the songs part of the event

Both reviews describe vigorous audience participation, with fans singing along across the set. During “Cigarettes & Alcohol,” Rolling Stone reports that fans joined a soccer-style “poznan” celebration, turning the song into a collective moment rather than simply watching the band perform it.

Hudak also observed twentysomethings among the crowd. That is a reviewer’s impression, not a demographic survey, but it points to a meaningful part of the reunion’s appeal: the show brought younger listeners into contact with a catalog that had long circulated beyond its original moment. The night could work at once as a return for longtime fans and as a first live encounter with these songs for a newer generation.

What the reviews leave as the verdict

The Chicago return did not need elaborate staging to feel momentous. Its force came from the reunion’s visible signs—the brothers’ entrance and their shared place onstage—set against the steadiness of the performance and the audience’s response. The Sun-Times’ phrase “They missed the single biggest do-over in music history” captures the scale of the moment as a critic’s flourish; the concert itself offered the more grounded answer, in a full set of songs played to a crowd that knew them.

For Hudak, “In Chicago, anyway, the answer was an undeniable yes.” That is a review’s judgment rather than a universal conclusion, but it fits the evidence the accounts emphasize: a focused performance, a deep run through Oasis’s catalog and a crowd ready to sing along.
