Approach these works as funerary objects, not ordinary gallery portraits. The face may be painted on wood or linen, but it was made to accompany a wrapped body and support the deceased’s identity in the afterlife. Before deciding what a portrait “shows,” read its label for medium, date, findspot and funerary context, then examine how support, paint, gaze, clothing and display work together.
What “Fayum portraits” means
A useful name, but not a precise label for every object
“Fayum portraits” is the familiar name for a group of Roman-period Egyptian funerary portraits associated with important discoveries in the Fayum region. The term is imperfect for the wider category: mummy paintings have also been found at other Egyptian sites. “Mummy portraits” is often the more accurate broad description.
The date range is also wider than a single generation. The National Archaeological Museum describes many examples as dating from the first through third centuries CE, with some possibly from the fourth century. An individual museum label may give a narrower date, and that object-specific information should take precedence over a general period.
They belong to a funerary ensemble
Many surviving examples are thin wooden panels that were placed over the deceased’s face and held in position by mummy wrappings. A museum may display the panel by itself, however, because it has been removed from the rest of the burial. Other works are painted on linen or appear as masks, coffin decoration or other funerary forms.

That distinction changes how you look. A detached panel can resemble a modern portrait, but its original setting included a wrapped body, burial equipment and beliefs about continued existence after death. Check whether the label identifies a panel, a mummy, a mask or another part of an ensemble.
Why the portrait was placed on a mummy
An individualized face in an Egyptian burial practice
These images combine a recognizable, often naturalistically modeled face with Egyptian funerary customs under Roman rule. They are neither simply “Egyptian” nor simply Greek or Roman. The materials, clothing, hairstyles and image-making conventions reflect cultural combinations that varied by period, workshop and community.
The face helped identify the deceased within the burial. Its direct gaze and lifelike modeling can feel intensely personal, but the object was created for a funerary purpose rather than as a stand-alone household portrait. The National Archaeological Museum discusses this role in relation to the deceased and beliefs about the afterlife; the Vatican Museums describe the panel’s placement over the mummy’s face.
Do not assume a portrait was painted immediately before death
A convincing likeness does not prove that the sitter posed shortly before dying. The evidence does not support a universal rule about when or from what reference every image was made. Treat the portrait as a representation shaped by funerary needs, artistic practice and local convention unless the museum supplies more specific documentation.

Look first at the support and surface
Wood, linen and other funerary materials
Begin with what physically carries the image. Is it a thin wooden board, linen, a molded mask or part of a coffin? Look at the edges, grain, weave, cracks and any visible attachment points. A wood panel may retain evidence of how it fitted into wrappings even when it is now framed or mounted vertically.
When a mummy or wrapping is displayed nearby, note whether the portrait remains attached to it or is presented separately. The relationship is part of the meaning, not merely a display decision. Labels may also identify a textile support or a painted funerary surface that is easy to mistake for wood at a distance.
Let the label establish the medium
Museum descriptions commonly identify either encaustic or tempera, but a reproduction, photograph or online image cannot reliably establish the technique on its own. Use the institution’s technical description when it is provided.
How the paint was made and what that looks like
Encaustic
Encaustic mixes pigment with wax. In many examples, this medium supports a rich palette and pronounced modeling through light and shadow. At close range, you may see a more substantial, varied surface, with marks that seem embedded in or built up from the wax-rich paint.

Tempera
Tempera uses a water-based binding medium. Tempera portraits are often described as more frontal and less heavily modeled than encaustic examples. These are tendencies in museum collections, not diagnostic rules: a frontal image can be encaustic, and a tempera painting can still have substantial tonal modeling.
Brushwork and modeling
Study how the artist turns a flat panel into a face. Look for highlights on the nose, cheeks, brow and lips; darker passages around the eyes and hair; and the direction of individual strokes. Ask whether the transitions are blended, layered, or left as visible marks. Compare the handling of skin with the handling of hair, jewelry and clothing. Differences in surface may reflect both technique and the condition of the object.
A seven-step method for viewing one portrait
- Read the object label before interpreting the image. Record the stated date, findspot, support, medium and whether the object is a detached panel or part of a mummy or other funerary form.
- Stand back first. Take in the frontal pose, scale, gaze and silhouette before moving close enough to inspect brushwork. Notice how the face is positioned within the panel.
- Inspect the support. Look for wood grain, linen weave, panel edges, joins, wrappings, mask contours or coffin surfaces. These physical details can reveal the object’s original role.
- Identify the paint technique from the label, then test your observation. Look for the richer modeling often associated with encaustic or the comparatively flatter, frontal treatment often associated with tempera, while treating both as tendencies.
- Trace the modeling of the face. Follow highlights and shadows around the eyes, nose, mouth and jaw. Ask how the artist creates volume and where the strongest contrast falls.
- Examine dress and adornment as evidence, not proof. Note tunics, cloaks, earrings, necklaces, hair arrangements and other details. Do not use appearance alone to assign ethnicity, exact social rank or a personal identity.
- Reconnect the face to the burial. Consider how the direct gaze would have functioned over a wrapped body, and whether the gallery presentation separates the image from materials that originally explained its purpose.
What clothing, jewelry and hairstyle can—and cannot—tell you
Dress and adornment are among the most visible clues in a portrait. They can help you compare conventions of representation and notice distinctions between examples. A hairstyle may be carefully rendered; jewelry may be highlighted to catch light; a garment may indicate how the artist organized the body beneath the face.
Those observations do not, by themselves, establish the sitter’s ethnicity, profession, wealth or exact identity. Cultural identities in Roman Egypt were complex, and visual conventions could travel between communities. Treat a clothing detail as something you can see first. Move to a stronger historical claim only when the museum’s documentation supports it.

How to compare two or more portraits
When several examples are displayed together, compare the same categories in the same order. This keeps the comparison grounded in visible evidence and label information rather than intuition.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Support and medium | Is each image on wood, linen or another funerary surface? Does the label identify encaustic, tempera or another technique? |
| Date and findspot | What dates are given, and where was each object documented as found? Is the findspot actually in the Fayum or elsewhere in Egypt? |
| Pose and modeling | How frontal is the face? Where are the strongest highlights and shadows? How much volume does the modeling create? |
| Clothing and jewelry | What garments, ornaments and hairstyles are visible, and how are they painted? |
| Funerary presentation | Is the portrait shown with a mummy, wrapping, mask, coffin or other related material, or as a detached panel? |
A comparison should end with a documented difference, such as “one label identifies a linen support and the other a wood panel,” rather than an unsupported conclusion about who the sitters were.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use the label without overreading it
Date and place are object-specific
The word “Fayum” in a gallery title or display grouping does not prove that every object was found in the Fayum. Prominent discoveries shaped the modern name, while examples are known from elsewhere. Give priority to the individual label’s provenance and date.
Technical terms carry limits
If the label says “encaustic,” “tempera,” “wood panel” or “linen,” use those terms for that object. Do not transfer a technique from one portrait to a neighboring work simply because the surfaces look similar. Museum collections contain variation, and conservation treatments can affect appearance.

Findspot is not the same as place of manufacture
A documented findspot tells you where an object was discovered or excavated, not automatically where its artist worked or where the sitter lived. Keep those questions separate unless the museum provides evidence connecting them.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every mummy portrait a Fayum find. Use “mummy portrait” when the documented findspot is outside the Fayum or is not stated.
- Reducing the works to one culture. Roman-period Egypt produced visual forms that combine Egyptian funerary practice with wider Mediterranean artistic traditions.
- Using appearance to identify ethnicity. Facial features, skin tone and hairstyle are not sufficient evidence for a sitter’s ethnic identity.
- Treating stylistic tendencies as tests. Encaustic is often more richly modeled and tempera often more frontal, but neither pattern identifies every work.
- Forgetting the burial setting. A portrait displayed alone was originally connected to a mummy, wrapping or other funerary material.
- Assuming a lifelike face is a deathbed likeness. The image’s naturalism does not establish when or how it was made.
A current example: the Tondo of the Two Brothers
On 11 October 2026, the Associated Press reported that Egypt had unveiled a restored version of the Tondo of the Two Brothers. The report described a planned Rome exhibition running from November 2026 through May 2027 and bringing together more than 110 objects, including portraits and related funerary material. Exhibition dates can change, so confirm the current schedule with the museum or organizer before making travel plans.
Egypt’s minister of tourism and antiquities, Sherif Fathy, called the restoration “an important example of what can be achieved through international cooperation in the preservation and study of cultural heritage.” The restoration is a reminder that these objects are also conservation projects: surface appearance, structural stability and the history of treatment can shape what visitors see.
A compact checklist for your museum visit
- What is the object’s documented findspot?
- What date or date range does the label give?
- Is the support wood, linen, a mask, a coffin or another surface?
- Does the museum identify encaustic, tempera or another medium?
- Is the portrait still attached to a mummy or wrapping?
- How does the artist create volume in the face?
- Which details of clothing, jewelry and hair are directly visible?
- Which conclusions are supported by the label, and which would be speculation?
- What changes when you imagine the image over a wrapped body rather than in a frame?
For extended study, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Ancient Faces, the Egyptian Museum Cairo’s material on Fayum portraits, the Vatican Museums’ entry on a young man’s portrait, and the National Archaeological Museum’s overview provide different institutional perspectives on context, technique and funerary use. A museum’s own catalogue entry remains the best authority for the particular object in front of you.
