Jeff Baena was an American screenwriter, director, and producer whose films used dark comedy, surreal premises, ensemble casts, and emotional unease to explore relationships, grief, identity, and dislocation. He was also Aubrey Plaza’s husband and frequent creative collaborator, but his career began before—and extended beyond—his work with Plaza.
Baena died in Los Angeles on January 3, 2025, at age 47. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that the manner of death was suicide. His death has understandably prompted renewed interest in his relationship with Plaza and in the films he left behind; the most useful way to understand him, however, is to look first at the body of work he created.
Who was Jeff Baena?
Jeffrey Lance Baena was a filmmaker whose career moved between screenwriting, directing, producing, and television. His first major screenwriting credit was I Heart Huckabees (2004), which he co-wrote with David O. Russell.
Baena later established himself as a director of independent features. His principal writing and directing credits include Life After Beth (2014), Joshy (2016), The Little Hours (2017), Horse Girl (2020), and Spin Me Round (2022). He was also associated with the 2021 anthology project Cinema Toast.

Across those projects, Baena repeatedly returned to uncomfortable emotional situations and pushed them toward the absurd. His films can involve zombies, medieval convents, psychological uncertainty, romantic or social awkwardness, and fractured perceptions of reality. The humor is often deliberately abrasive, but it sits alongside grief, loneliness, friendship, and the difficulty of understanding other people.
Jeff Baena and Aubrey Plaza: relationship timeline
- Around 2011: Baena and Plaza began their relationship, according to contemporaneous and later reporting.
- During the COVID-19 pandemic: The couple privately married after being together for approximately a decade, according to reporting about their relationship.
- 2021: Plaza publicly referred to Baena as her husband, making the marriage known more broadly.
- September 2024: Later reporting based on the medical examiner-coroner’s report said that the couple had been separated for several months by the time of Baena’s death.
- January 3, 2025: Baena died in Los Angeles at age 47.
Baena and Plaza kept much of their private life away from public scrutiny. The later-reported separation is a relationship-status detail, not an explanation for his death. No reliable public account establishes a motive, and it would be inappropriate to turn an unverified theory about their private life into one.
His creative partnership with Aubrey Plaza
Plaza appeared in several projects connected to Baena, including Life After Beth, The Little Hours, and Spin Me Round. Their partnership was both personal and professional, but Plaza was one part of a broader creative circle that Baena built over multiple films.
Baena frequently worked with performers and writers who could handle tonal shifts: a scene might begin as broad comedy and end in embarrassment, fear, grief, or emotional exposure. Alison Brie, Molly Shannon, John C. Reilly, Dane DeHaan, Anna Kendrick, and other recurring or notable collaborators helped populate that world. His filmography should therefore be read as more than a series of Plaza projects.

Life After Beth (2014)
Life After Beth was Baena’s feature directorial debut. He wrote and directed the film, which stars Aubrey Plaza as Beth, Dane DeHaan as Zach, and a supporting ensemble that includes Anna Kendrick, John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon, Cheryl Hines, and Paul Reiser.
The dark comedy begins with a familiar experience of bereavement and then takes it in a supernatural direction: Zach’s deceased girlfriend returns to life. The premise gives Baena room to examine grief, denial, possessiveness, and the instability of romantic expectations through horror-comedy rather than conventional drama.

The film should not be treated as a prediction or explanation of Baena’s death. Its relevance is artistic: it introduces many of the concerns that recur in his work—mortality, relationships under pressure, and the uneasy overlap between the ridiculous and the painful.
Joshy (2016)
Joshy centers on a group of male friends gathering at a house after a painful event in one friend’s life. The film uses improvisational comedy and ensemble interaction to show how people behave when they are trying to avoid, disguise, or survive grief.
Sundance’s description of the film emphasized its combination of improvised humor, complicated male friendship, and emotional loss. That combination is important to Baena’s development as a filmmaker: the comedy is not separate from the characters’ pain, but often becomes the way they avoid addressing it.
The Little Hours (2017)
The Little Hours is a period-set black comedy loosely based on material associated with Giovanni Boccaccio’s The Decameron. Baena wrote and directed the film, which places a group of unruly nuns, a servant, and other characters in a deliberately irreverent medieval setting.
The film is particularly strong evidence of Baena’s interest in ensemble filmmaking. Its humor comes from the collision between formal historical surroundings and behavior that feels startlingly modern, profane, and emotionally recognizable. Plaza is part of the cast, alongside an ensemble that includes Alison Brie, Dave Franco, Kate Micucci, Aubrey Plaza, John C. Reilly, and others.
Horse Girl (2020)
Horse Girl is a darkly humorous psychological thriller directed by Baena and co-written by Baena and Alison Brie, who also stars. The story follows a woman trying to make sense of increasingly surreal experiences and the possibility that her perception of reality cannot be trusted.

Among Baena’s films, Horse Girl most clearly foregrounds psychological dislocation and ambiguity. It resists a simple distinction between the supernatural, the psychological, and the ordinary. That uncertainty is not merely a plot device; it shapes the viewer’s experience of the character’s isolation.
Spin Me Round (2022)
Spin Me Round was Baena’s final commonly cited feature as director, writer, and producer. The film follows an American restaurant manager who travels to Italy for an immersive training experience and finds that the promised escape becomes increasingly strange and complicated.
Alison Brie and Aubrey Plaza were among the project’s collaborators. Like several of Baena’s earlier films, it uses an apparently appealing situation—a trip, a romantic possibility, or a professional opportunity—as the setting for uncertainty, power imbalances, and comic discomfort.
What made Baena’s filmmaking distinctive?
Baena’s work is difficult to reduce to one genre. It often combines:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Dark comedy: Painful subjects are approached through awkwardness, absurdity, or deliberately inappropriate humor.
- Surreal or genre-based premises: Zombies, altered perceptions, medieval settings, and unfamiliar social environments allow ordinary anxieties to become more visible.
- Ensemble performance: His films rely on groups whose conflicting reactions create both comedy and emotional pressure.
- Improvisational energy: The dialogue and interactions often feel loose, unpredictable, and responsive to the performers.
- Emotional ambiguity: Baena frequently avoids giving audiences a single comfortable interpretation of what happened or what a character is experiencing.
That approach made his films recognizably independent in spirit. They were willing to be odd, tonally unstable, and less reassuring than mainstream comedies, while still using humor to keep difficult material accessible.
What has been officially established about his death?
Baena died in Los Angeles on January 3, 2025, at age 47. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that the manner of death was suicide; Reuters reported the cause listed in the medical examiner’s report. This article does not include graphic details.

After his death, Plaza and Baena’s family described the loss as an “unimaginable tragedy” and thanked people who had offered support. Later reporting said that the couple had been separated since approximately September 2024. That report does not establish a cause or motive, and there is no responsible basis for connecting the separation to the death.

Why his legacy is larger than his marriage
Aubrey Plaza is an important part of Jeff Baena’s story, both as his spouse and as a performer in several of his films. But defining him only through that relationship overlooks the arc of his career: from co-writing I Heart Huckabees to directing five distinctive independent features and participating in television and anthology work.
