If it’s a purchased Kindle book and you only want to free space, choose Remove Download (or Remove from Device on some older Kindles). The book stays in your Amazon library for later access. Keep it downloaded if you want it offline; permanently delete it only if you are sure you want it removed from your account.
Choose what to do based on where the book came from
“Remove” can mean different things for a purchase, a borrowed title, or a file you added yourself. Identify the source before using a menu command.

Do you need to remove a book when you finish it?
No. A finished book can stay on your Kindle indefinitely. Keep it downloaded if you may reread it, need it offline, use it as a reference, or want to preserve convenient access to your annotations. If storage is not a concern, doing nothing is a valid choice.

If you want a record of what you read without keeping every file on the device, note the title and your rating or takeaway in a reading journal, spreadsheet, notes app, or Goodreads.

Remove a purchased book from a Kindle e-reader
- Open Home or Library and find the book.
- Open the menu on its cover, or press and hold the cover.
- Choose Remove Download and confirm if prompted. Some models or software versions use Remove from Device.
The title may remain visible in your library as an undownloaded book. That is expected: the device copy is gone, but the purchase remains in your Amazon cloud library. Amazon’s instructions distinguish this from permanent deletion: Remove Books from Your Kindle E-Reader.
Remove a book from the Kindle app
- Open the Kindle app and find the title under Home or Library.
- Press and hold the cover to open its menu.
- Choose Remove Download to remove a local copy of a purchased book.
For a borrowed title, look for a return command instead of treating download removal as the end of the loan. App labels and menu placement can vary by app version and content type. Amazon’s app guidance is at Remove Books from Your Mobile Kindle App.
Return subscription and library books
Kindle Unlimited
Press and hold the title in the Kindle app and select Return to Kindle Unlimited when that option appears. Returning ends the borrow and removes the book from your library; removing only its download is not the same as returning it. Kindle Unlimited provides subscription access rather than permanent ownership. Amazon says access to checked-out content ends after the billing period when a subscription is canceled: Cancel Your Kindle Unlimited Subscription.

Prime Reading
Choose Return for a Prime Reading title. It is a borrowed membership title, not a permanent purchase; buy it separately if you want to keep access as an owner. Amazon’s app instructions describe the return option alongside other removal choices at Remove Books from Your Mobile Kindle App.
Libby Kindle loans
For U.S. Kindle-format loans, returning early may require finishing the process through Amazon or a Kindle device or app rather than only inside Libby. In Libby, the route is generally:
- Open Shelf, then Loans.
- Select Manage Loan, then Return Early.
- Select Return with Kindle and complete the return on Amazon’s website.
- Return to Libby and confirm the title is returned if prompted.
You can also open the loan’s menu on a Kindle. Depending on the device, choose Remove from Library or Return to Public Library and confirm. In the Kindle app, press and hold the cover and choose Remove from Library if offered. Libby explains the available routes and device-label differences in Returning Kindle Books and Returning Titles. Availability and labels can vary, so check the loan status in Libby after completing the return.

When to permanently delete a book
Do not use Permanently Delete just to free storage. It removes the title from your Amazon account and associated devices, rather than only removing the local download. Amazon warns that a purchased title may need to be purchased again if you want it after permanent deletion. Use this option only when account-level removal is your goal, such as clearing an unwanted document, and you accept that recovery may not be possible.
Amazon’s account interface changes over time and by region. Look in your Amazon account for Content Library, Books, or Manage Your Content and Devices to manage account-level items; do not confuse those controls with removing downloads from one device. If you accidentally permanently delete a purchase, contact Amazon support promptly, but do not assume it can be restored.
Organize finished books without erasing them
Keep favorites available
Leave favorites, study books, references, and likely rereads downloaded when you want immediate or offline access. If you have important notes or highlights, copy or export what matters before making account-level changes; behavior can differ among purchases, loans, and personal documents.

Use collections for library organization
Collections can group titles into categories such as Finished, Favorites, Reference, or To Reread. A collection is an organizational aid, not a storage cleanup command. Kindle documentation distinguishes deleting a collection from deleting the content in it: Kindle User Guide.
Remove downloads while keeping purchases
For a minimalist device library, keep only current or likely-to-reread books downloaded and remove other purchased titles’ downloads. The covers may remain visible as cloud-library entries; that does not mean the device files are still taking up space.
If a returned or removed book still appears
An old cover can remain because the Kindle has not synced, the device is offline, or the title remains in the account library as an undownloaded item. A library loan may also still be active if only its local copy was removed.

- Connect the Kindle or app to the internet and sync it.
- Check Libby to confirm that the loan status says returned.
- If the loan is still active, complete the return through Amazon, Kindle, or the Kindle app rather than only removing its download.
- If an outdated library entry remains, check the Amazon Content Library and use the relevant removal option if available.
- Restart the app or e-reader if the displayed cover does not update. Libby also recommends manually syncing its shelf when a returned loan still appears.
If a purchased book seems to have disappeared rather than merely being undownloaded, confirm that the Kindle or app is signed in to the Amazon account that bought it before troubleshooting or buying it again.
Take extra care with USB-transferred files
Amazon’s Kindle cloud does not store files transferred to a Kindle by USB. Keep the original EPUB, PDF, MOBI, or other file on a computer or backup drive before removing it from the device. Do not assume you can redownload a USB-loaded file from Amazon. For documents delivered through Amazon-supported methods, check whether Personal Document Archiving is enabled and retain another copy of anything important.
Before selling or giving away a Kindle
Removing books one by one is not a substitute for preparing the device for a new owner. Factory-reset it to deregister it from your Amazon account before handing it over. Amazon’s steps are at Factory Reset Your Kindle E-Reader.
