Preserve the exact claim and reference first, then look for the publisher’s current or successor page, search a web archive for the original URL, and test whether the recovered material really supports the words, dates, names and context used in the film. Keep the broken reference, replacement link and any uncertainty in an audit trail.
What a missing or broken link tells you—and what it does not
A documentary source link can fail because a page moved, a publisher reorganized its site, a report was withdrawn, a file was deleted, or an archive never captured the material. The National Archives (UK) warns that content already missing when an official website is archived will not be captured, so a broken link does not establish that the cited material never existed. See the National Archives guidance on creating an official inquiry website.
Nor does finding a copy settle the documentary’s claim. An archived page is a snapshot from a particular time. It may omit a linked PDF, script-driven elements, comments, images, audio or video, and access can be delayed or restricted. The Library of Congress describes these limits in its guidance for researchers and site owners: web archiving for researchers and frequently asked questions for site owners.
Your task is therefore two separate investigations: recover the source as accurately as possible, then assess whether that source supports the documentary’s exact assertion. A successful recovery can increase confidence, reveal a qualification the film omitted, or show that the citation was misapplied.

How to find a source when a documentary link is broken
1. Preserve the citation exactly as presented
Before searching, copy the complete URL, including a query string or file name. Record the documentary title, episode or release date, the timestamp or transcript passage, the source label shown on screen, and the exact sentence, statistic, quotation or image claim the reference is supposed to support. Save a dated screenshot or note of the error message. Do not silently substitute a new URL and discard the original: the original reference is evidence of what viewers were given.
If the citation appears only in an end-credit list, transcribe punctuation, report numbers, edition labels and spelling. A single digit in a report number or a missing version date can lead to the wrong document.
2. Search for the publisher’s current or successor page
Start with the source owner rather than a repost. Search the exact old URL in quotation marks, then search the source title, author or institution, publication date, distinctive wording and any report or document number. Check the publisher’s main site, catalog, newsroom, report repository and official records system. Government agencies, universities, courts and research organizations often move older material into a new document library while retaining the same title.
If a page has moved, prefer a publisher-controlled successor URL and verify that it identifies the same author, organization, date and edition. A search result snippet is only a lead; open the document or page and read it. For quotations, search enough exact wording to locate the original passage, then confirm the speaker and surrounding text. An unattributed quote page or a later article repeating the line is not an adequate substitute.

3. Search an archive using the original URL
Submit the old address to a web archive and inspect captures around both the documentary’s publication date and the date the source cites. Save the archive URL and its timestamp. If several captures exist, compare them: a later capture may include a correction, revised chart or replacement file that was not present when the documentary was made.
Expect gaps. The Library of Congress notes that interactive components and material requiring scripts or plug-ins can be difficult to capture, while some archived content is embargoed or permission-limited. An archive may preserve the landing page but not a linked spreadsheet, video stream or downloadable report. Treat a partial capture as partial evidence and describe exactly what is visible.
4. Test identity, date and completeness
Confirm that the recovered item is the same source, not merely a page with a similar headline. Check:
- the author, issuing organization and publisher;
- the publication, revision or upload date and version number;
- the geography, population, time period or edition relevant to the documentary;
- whether the full document is available or only an excerpt, cached page or screenshot; and
- whether tables, appendices, footnotes, captions and corrections are present.
Read beyond a search snippet or isolated quotation. Note whether the source states a measured fact, reports someone else’s allegation, presents an interpretation or uses cautious language such as “may,” “estimated” or “insufficient evidence.” Those distinctions matter when a film’s narration uses stronger wording.

5. Check whether it supports the exact claim
Write the documentary’s assertion in one sentence, then write the source’s relevant passage in another. Compare them directly. Does the source support the same number, date, causal explanation and degree of certainty? Did the film turn a forecast into a result, a correlation into a cause, or a single case into a general pattern? Look for qualifications, contrary findings and limits that appear elsewhere in the document.
Seek independent corroboration when the claim warrants it. A second article that copied the same report is not independent confirmation. Prefer a separate dataset, primary record, contemporaneous interview or unrelated institution. The House of Commons Library’s guidance on checking facts and verifying images and video recommends tracing original sources, checking quotes and named parties, examining context and comparing with other reporting: How to check facts and How to verify images and videos.
6. Record the repair without overstating it
Keep a compact record that another editor or viewer can audit:
- the documentary title, release or episode date and the timestamp of the claim;
- the original broken URL and the date you tested it;
- the publisher’s successor URL or archive URL, including the capture date;
- the source’s author, organization, title, date and version;
- the exact proposition the recovered material supports, qualifies or fails to support; and
- any missing pages, unresolved identity questions, access limits or contradictory evidence.
For a production, preserve the record in a fact-check document or annotated script. PBS FRONTLINE’s Journalistic Guidelines state: “Producers should be prepared to show and cite their sourcing or sources in a fact-checking document or annotated script.” The same guidance addresses checking factual assertions in long-form programs and readiness to correct them: PBS FRONTLINE’s Journalistic Guidelines. PBS accuracy standards also advise identifying the source and its reliability for each assertion and linking to original material where feasible: PBS Standards: Accuracy.

How to compare multiple recovered candidates
When several pages or files appear to match, evaluate them on the same dimensions rather than choosing the easiest result. This prevents a polished repost from displacing the authoritative record.
| Candidate | Provenance | Date and version | Completeness | Support to test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Publisher’s current or successor page | Original issuing organization controls the page | Check that the edition corresponds to the documentary’s cited period | Look for the full report, appendices, footnotes and corrections | Read the original passage and confirm the documentary’s wording does not overstate it |
| Web-archive capture | Independent snapshot of the former URL | Use the capture timestamp and compare captures before and after publication | Check for missing files, scripts, media or restricted content | Establish what was publicly available at that time, not what the live site says today |
| Third-party repost | Republisher may have altered layout, text or attachments | Check whether its date and edition match the cited source | Look for omitted pages, cropped images or an incomplete quotation | Use as a lead unless the original publisher confirms it |
| Independent corroborating source | Separate institution, dataset or primary record | Confirm it covers the same period and population | Read its methods and stated limitations | Determine whether it genuinely tests the claim rather than repeating the same report |
Special cases: quotations, images, video and interactive evidence
Quotations
Search the distinctive wording, but do not stop at the first matching page. Verify the speaker, interview or document, the date and the sentences before and after the quoted line. A quote can be authentic yet misleading if a qualifier was removed or if the speaker was describing someone else’s position.
Images and video clips
Trace the earliest identifiable upload or publisher. Examine metadata when available, watermarks, captions, location clues, weather, uniforms, signage and edits. Reverse-image or ordinary web searches can locate earlier appearances, but an earlier appearance is not automatically the original. Check whether the documentary’s narration assigns the image to the correct event, date and place. The House of Commons Library’s image and video guidance covers this source-tracing and context work at its verification briefing.
Archives may preserve a video page without the playable file, or a thumbnail without its metadata. Record that limitation instead of treating the preserved page as proof of what the missing media contained.

Interactive charts, maps and databases
Capture the displayed filters, date range and download settings. An archived interface may load without its underlying data or scripts. If the publisher provides a static report or downloadable dataset, compare the values and definitions. State which version you inspected; interactive results can change when the live database is updated.
Does a broken citation mean the documentary is wrong?
No. Link failure alone cannot establish fabrication or falsity. It can indicate poor maintenance, a site migration, removal, a failed archive capture or an inaccessible file. The appropriate conclusion is narrower: the documentary’s support is currently difficult to inspect until the source is recovered or independently verified.
Confidence should change according to what the recovery shows. A publisher-controlled successor that matches the cited edition and directly supports the narration strengthens the citation. A partial archive that lacks the key table leaves uncertainty. A recovered source that contradicts the narration, uses a different population or contains an omitted qualification weakens the claim even though the link has been repaired. If no reliable copy can be found, report that limitation rather than declaring the claim false solely because the URL is dead.
Access is not permission to reuse
Finding a scan in an archive answers an availability question, not a copyright question. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration says it does not confirm copyright status or grant usage rights for its audiovisual holdings; permission may depend on the individual item and intended use. Consult the relevant rights holder or a qualified rights specialist before reproducing a photograph, clip, recording, chart or document in a new film, article or website. See NARA’s permissions and rights guidance.

Quick Recap
A concise decision checklist
- Preserve the exact broken URL, claim, timestamp, source label and error date.
- Search the original publisher using the URL, title, author, date, report number and distinctive wording.
- Prefer and document a publisher-controlled successor page.
- Search an archive and save captures near the documentary’s and source’s relevant dates.
- Verify identity, edition, geography, completeness and surrounding context.
- Compare the recovered passage with the documentary’s exact wording and certainty.
- Seek genuinely independent corroboration when the claim’s stakes justify it.
- Log the original reference, replacement or capture, what it supports and what remains uncertain.
- Handle copyright and reuse permission separately from factual support.
