What to Bring to Your First Boxing Class: A Beginner’s Guide

For a first boxing class, wear comfortable athletic clothes, bring water and suitable athletic shoes, and arrive 10–15 minutes early. Pack a small towel if the gym has showers. Before buying gloves or wraps, ask the gym what it supplies and what the class requires: policies differ, and a non-contact beginner session may not need the same protection as partner work or sparring.

The short packing list

Use this as a starting point, then adjust it to the instructions in your booking confirmation or the gym’s FAQ. The listed items are drawn from beginner guidance at Eastside Boxing Club and Nanaimo Boxing Club; neither gym’s list should be treated as a universal rule.

Item Bring on day one? What to verify
Comfortable athletic clothes Yes Choose clothing that lets you move freely and manage heat.
Athletic shoes Usually, but ask first Footwear rules are venue-specific. One gym recommends ordinary shoes; another describes flat-soled shoes for its first class.
Water bottle Yes Confirm whether the facility has a fountain or a bottle-filling rule.
Small towel Useful Especially worthwhile if you intend to shower; bring toiletries as well when the gym requests them.
Hand wraps Only after checking policy Some clubs require personal wraps, while others say wraps are available.
Boxing gloves Do not assume you need to buy them Ask about loaners, the class format, and the coach’s preferred type and size.
Mouthguard or headgear Not automatically Confirm whether the session includes partner contact or sparring and follow the gym’s safety rules.

Check the gym before you pack

The most useful preparation is a short message or phone call. Equipment policies vary even among beginner programs, so a generic shopping list can leave you with unnecessary gear or without an item the coach expects.

Ask what is supplied

Find out whether the club lends gloves, pads and wraps, and whether loaned items are included in the class fee. Eastside says it lends gloves and pads but requires visitors to have personal hand wraps. Nanaimo says beginners can get wraps and gloves if needed. Those different policies are why you should not buy a complete kit before your first visit.

Confirm the session format

Ask whether your booking is for bag work, pad work, a fundamentals class, partner drills or a session that includes sparring. Protective equipment decisions depend on that format. A class described as “beginner” does not, by itself, tell you whether there will be contact.

Verify arrival and check-in details

Ask where first-time visitors should go, whether a waiver must be signed, and whether the class starts at the advertised time or has a separate orientation. Eastside recommends arriving 10–15 minutes early for a waiver and hand wrapping; Nanaimo asks first-time visitors to arrive 15 minutes early. Treat those as practical examples and follow your own booking instructions.

Get the footwear rule in writing

Available guidance is not consistent enough to establish one universal shoe requirement. Nanaimo’s FAQ simply tells beginners to bring shoes, while KD MMA’s first-class guidance for its boxing classes specifies flat-soled shoes (KD MMA boxing classes). If your gym has a particular surface or a no-outdoor-shoe rule, only the gym can answer that question.

Clothing that will not distract you

Choose movement over appearance

Wear athletic clothing that allows your shoulders, hips and legs to move without restriction. Shorts, track pants, leggings or a lightweight training top can all work if they are comfortable for you and permitted by the venue. The key requirement in the beginner advice from Nanaimo is simply “comfortable clothes, shoes and water.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid trying a new outfit on the same day as your first class. Seams, waistbands, loose drawstrings or fabric that traps heat can become distracting once the session includes repeated movement. Select clothes you have already worn for exercise and know you can move in.

Plan for temperature changes

Wear layers you can remove before class and put back on afterward. Keep any extra layer in your bag rather than leaving it on the gym floor. This is a comfort strategy, not a substitute for following the club’s clothing rules.

Pack a change if you have a long journey home

A clean shirt and spare socks are optional, but useful if you will travel or work after class. They are not stated requirements in the cited gym FAQs; treat them as a personal comfort choice rather than mandatory equipment.

Shoes: a question for the venue, not the internet

Bring athletic shoes unless the gym tells you to train barefoot or provides another instruction. Check whether outdoor footwear is allowed on the training surface, whether the class uses mats, and whether the coach wants a flat sole. The available examples show why assumptions fail: one venue’s advice is simply to bring shoes, while KD MMA identifies flat-soled shoes for its own classes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are unsure on arrival

  1. Keep your shoes in your bag until staff tell you where to change.
  2. Ask whether the pair you brought is acceptable for that floor.
  3. If the answer is no, ask whether the gym has a loaner option or an alternative for that session.

Do not buy a specialized pair solely because a general article recommends it. Your gym’s surface and policy are the deciding factors.

Water, towels and shower items

Water bottle

Put a filled bottle in your bag. Both Eastside and Nanaimo include water in their beginner advice. If you forget one, ask where the gym’s drinking fountain is rather than leaving the class to search for it.

Ringside Mexican Style Boxing Hand Wraps 180", 1 Pair, Black
  • BUILT FOR BOXING, MMA & COMBAT SPORTS: Ringside Mexican Style Boxing Hand Wraps are made for boxing, MMA, Muay Thai, kickboxing, sparring, mitt work, heavy bag training, shadowboxing, and general combat sports conditioning. The 180" length gives athletes enough wrap coverage for the knuckles, hands, and wrists, making these boxing wraps a practical choice for gym sessions, home training, classes, and fight-prep routines.
  • 180" MEXICAN STYLE STRETCH: The semi-elastic cotton blend gives these hand wraps a Mexican-style feel with light stretch, comfortable tension, and a snug fit that helps reduce bunching when wrapped correctly. The longer 180-inch design works well for most adult users and offers more wrapping coverage than shorter 108" or 120" wraps, especially for athletes who prefer extra wrist turns, knuckle coverage, or wraps between the fingers.
  • WRIST SUPPORT & KNUCKLE COVERAGE: Use these boxing hand wraps under bag gloves, sparring gloves, training gloves, or MMA gloves to add a protective layer between your hands and your gear. When wrapped properly, the material helps support the wrist, cover the knuckles, and keep the hand more secure during punching workouts. A strong option for beginners learning to wrap and experienced users who train regularly.
  • THUMB LOOP & HOOK-LOOP CLOSURE: Each wrap includes a thumb loop to help start placement and a hook-and-loop closure to secure the wrap at the end of your wrap pattern. The design helps make the wraps easier to put on by yourself before boxing class, heavy bag work, sparring, kickboxing drills, or home gym workouts. For best results, follow a proper hand-wrapping tutorial and avoid wrapping too tightly.
  • MACHINE WASHABLE TRAINING PAIR: This set includes one pair of black Ringside hand wraps. The cotton-blend fabric is machine washable, making it easy to clean between training sessions, especially after sweaty boxing, MMA, or Muay Thai workouts. For longer life, wash with like colors, use a hand wrap wash bag to help prevent tangling, close the hook-and-loop tab before washing, and air dry or dry on low heat.

Towel and toiletries

A small towel is a sensible addition for wiping sweat or using the shower. Eastside has a shower and asks visitors who plan to use it to bring a towel and toiletries. If your club does not advertise showers, the towel remains optional; it is not a substitute for checking the facility’s amenities.

Keep liquids and personal items out of the training lane

Place your bottle and towel where staff direct you. Do not leave valuables beside bags or heavy equipment. If the gym has lockers, ask whether you need your own lock; the cited sources do not establish a universal locker policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hand wraps and gloves: buy only after you know the rules

Why wraps are often the first purchase

Hand wraps are the clearest possible first purchase when a gym requires personal wraps, because they sit between your hands and the gloves. However, even this decision belongs after a policy check. Eastside says it lends gloves and pads but expects personal wraps, while Nanaimo says it has wraps and gloves available for beginners.

If the gym asks you to bring wraps, ask what length, material or wrapping method the coach prefers. The available guidance does not establish one universal wrap specification. Learning the gym’s method is more useful than arriving with a product chosen at random.

Do not guess at glove size or type

Gloves are a larger and more expensive commitment than wraps, and the sources do not establish a single correct beginner size across gyms or training uses. Ask the coach which glove type and size fit the class. A glove suitable for bag drills may not be the one the gym wants for partner work, and a loaner may be perfectly adequate for your first visit.

Whether you are a pro or a beginner, this innovative design ensures that every wrap is quick and precise. With wrist wraps that can be wrapped instantly you can spend more time honing your skills

What to do if the policy is unclear

  1. Message the front desk: “Do first-time students need their own wraps or gloves?”
  2. Ask whether loaned equipment is available and whether there is a cleaning or rental rule.
  3. Ask what the class actually includes: bags, pads, partner drills or sparring.
  4. Wait to purchase until the coach confirms the size and type.

Mouthguards, headgear and other protection

Do not treat a mouthguard or headgear as an automatic first-day requirement. Some equipment guidance places protective items with partner work or sparring, while the Croydon Boxing Academy list includes mouthguard and headguard among training equipment (Croydon Boxing Academy’s equipment FAQ). F8 Training Studio and Killa Boxing likewise discuss protective equipment in the context of later or contact-based training (F8 Training Studio gear guide; Killa Boxing first-class guide).

Use the class rules as the trigger

Ask one direct question: “Will there be intentional contact today?” If the answer is no, the gym may not expect sparring protection. If the answer is yes, ask exactly what is mandatory, whether the gym supplies it, and whether there are hygiene or fit requirements.

Do not borrow protective equipment without permission

Only use a loaner mouthguard, headgear or other protective item if staff explicitly permit it and explain how it is cleaned and fitted. The sources do not establish a universal loaner standard, so the club’s own rule controls.

Arrive early and know what the first class may look like

A realistic arrival window

Plan to be at the facility 10–15 minutes before the start. Eastside’s beginner FAQ uses that window for completing a waiver and getting hands wrapped; Nanaimo asks first-time visitors to arrive 15 minutes early. Early arrival gives staff time to explain where to change, confirm your booking and answer equipment questions without taking you away from the session.

Example class flow

Eastside describes a class that includes skipping, partner and bag drills, followed by conditioning. That is one club’s example, not a promise about every gym. Your class may use a different order or omit partner work entirely. Listen for the coach’s briefing before putting on gloves or entering a drill.

What to do during the briefing

  • Tell the coach that you are new and mention any equipment you do not have.
  • Wait for instructions about where to stand, store your bag and get water.
  • Do not begin hitting a bag or joining a partner until the coach assigns the drill.
  • Ask for a pause if a wrap, glove or shoe feels wrong; fixing it early is easier than training around it.

A first-class timeline you can follow

  1. Before leaving home: Read the booking message, pack clothes, shoes and water, and add a towel and toiletries if you plan to shower.
  2. On the way: Keep your phone, keys and wallet together so you can store them quickly when you arrive.
  3. 10–15 minutes before start: Check in, complete any waiver and tell staff you are attending for the first time.
  4. Before warm-up: Confirm footwear, ask about wraps and gloves, and follow the gym’s wrapping instruction if required.
  5. During class: Listen for the drill sequence and contact rules. Use only the equipment the coach assigns.
  6. After class: Return loaned gear where staff direct you, collect your belongings and ask what to bring next time if you intend to continue.

The class includes partner contact or sparring Ask for the exact mouthguard, headgear and glove requirements before attending. Protection is tied to contact rules, not merely to being a beginner.
You plan to train regularly but have not attended Wait until the coach confirms glove type, size and wrap expectations. The sources do not support one universal beginner specification.

Common first-day mistakes and practical fixes

Buying a full kit before asking the gym

Why it causes trouble: You may duplicate loaner equipment or buy gloves that do not suit the class. Fix: Send the gym the four questions in the next section and purchase only what it confirms.

Arriving exactly at the start time

Why it causes trouble: A waiver or hand wrapping can make you miss the opening briefing. Fix: Use the 10–15-minute arrival window cited by Eastside and Nanaimo.

Assuming all shoes are acceptable

Why it causes trouble: Flooring and footwear rules differ. Fix: Check before class and ask staff to approve the pair you brought.

Bringing sparring protection without knowing the format

Why it causes trouble: You may spend unnecessarily or arrive with the wrong item. Fix: Ask whether there will be contact and follow the club’s equipment list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving water and personal items in the workout area

Why it causes trouble: Items can be misplaced or interfere with drills. Fix: Use the storage area designated at check-in.

Four questions to send before your booking

  1. “What should I bring to a boxing class at your gym if I am new?”
  2. “Do you provide gloves, hand wraps or pads, or should I bring my own?”
  3. “What footwear is permitted, and are flat-soled shoes required?”
  4. “Will this class include partner contact or sparring, and is a mouthguard or headgear required?”

These questions reflect the literal concerns used in gym FAQs, including “What should I bring to a boxing class?” and “What do I bring?” The answers you receive are more authoritative for your visit than a general checklist.

Printable checklist

  • Comfortable athletic clothes that you have already tested for exercise
  • Athletic shoes approved by the gym
  • Filled water bottle
  • Small towel
  • Toiletries if you will use the shower
  • Hand wraps, only if the gym requires or recommends personal wraps
  • Gloves, only if the gym does not provide them and the coach confirms the type and size
  • Mouthguard or headgear, only when the class rules require them
  • Phone, keys and wallet secured for storage
  • Arrival planned for 10–15 minutes before the scheduled start

What matters most

Your first boxing class is primarily an orientation to the gym’s routine, not a test of how much equipment you own. Comfortable clothing, water, approved shoes and an early arrival cover the consistent basics. Wraps and gloves depend on the club’s loaner policy, while mouthguards and headgear depend on whether the session includes contact. Ask before purchasing, follow the coach’s instructions at check-in, and let that first class tell you what—if anything—you actually need for the next one.
