What to Ask a Doula Before Booking Prenatal and Birth Support

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before booking a doula, interview them about six things: training and relevant experience, support philosophy, availability and backup, prenatal and postpartum services, the complete fee and contract, and the limits of their role. You are choosing both a service package and a person who may be present in your home and birth space, so communication style and personal comfort matter as much as credentials.

Use the questions below with every candidate, record the answers in writing, and read the agreement before paying a deposit. There is no universal price, schedule or package: location, experience, availability and the individual provider determine what is offered.

Start by defining the support you need

An interview is more useful when you know what you want the doula to do. Discuss your preferred birth setting, who else will support you, any previous birth or pregnancy experience, and concerns you want help with. You do not need a fixed birth plan. You do need to tell candidates whether you are mainly seeking comfort measures, continuous labor companionship, partner support, information, help preparing for a planned cesarean, or postpartum transition.

  • Note where you expect to give birth and whether the doula works in that setting.
  • List the people you want involved, such as a partner, relative or friend.
  • Identify practical requirements, including language, accessibility, travel distance and remote-contact needs.
  • Write down questions that are specific to your medical or emotional circumstances, then ask how the doula handles a request outside their training.

These notes let you compare candidates on the same basis instead of choosing the person with the most appealing introductory conversation.

Ask about training, certification and relevant experience

Where and how did you train?

Ask where the doula completed training, what the course covered, and whether they are certified, working toward certification or practicing without certification. If they hold a credential, ask which organization issued it, what requirements they met and what the credential means in the services they provide. Certification can help you identify candidates, but it does not by itself establish that a doula is the right fit or that every service you want is included.

Ask whether training is current and how the doula keeps skills up to date. A clear answer should distinguish formal education from informal experience and should explain any limits the doula places on their practice.

How long have you supported births?

Ask how long the doula has attended births, approximately how often they work, and which situations resemble yours. Relevant experience might include your planned setting, first birth or subsequent birth, long labor, induction, epidural, cesarean, vaginal birth after cesarean, multiples or a high level of anxiety. The purpose is not to demand a particular birth outcome; it is to learn whether the doula has encountered the logistics and emotions you may face.

Ask what they learned from difficult or unexpected births and how they adapted their support. You are listening for specific descriptions of comfort, communication and referral—not promises that they can control a clinical outcome.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the doula’s support philosophy

What does support look like in practice?

Ask the doula to describe the physical, emotional and informational support they normally provide. Possible comfort measures include movement, position changes, breathing prompts, touch, counter-pressure, heat or cold, hydration reminders and a calm environment. Ask how they adapt techniques to the person giving birth rather than applying a fixed routine.

Clarify how the doula responds when your preferences change. A useful answer should leave room for pain medication, a change in birth setting, an unplanned procedure or a decision to stop a technique. The doula’s role is to support informed choices and comfort, not to enforce a particular birth philosophy.

How do you support a partner or other chosen people?

Ask whether the doula works alongside a partner, family member or friend, and what that collaboration looks like. Some families want the doula to demonstrate comfort measures, while others want the doula to take a more hands-on role so the partner can rest. Ask how the doula handles disagreement among support people and how they keep the person giving birth at the center of decisions.

How would you describe your communication style?

Ask how often the doula communicates before labor, which channels they use, and how quickly they usually respond. Discuss whether you prefer concise text messages, detailed explanations, scheduled calls or a quieter presence. Because the doula may enter your home or remain in a hospital room for many hours, ask what their presence is like in a private space and what boundaries they observe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clarify coordination with the clinical care team

Ask how the doula communicates with nurses, midwives, physicians and other members of the clinical team. The doula should be able to explain their nonclinical role, offer comfort and information, and defer medical assessment and treatment to qualified clinicians. Ask what they do when you or your partner asks a question outside their training: a responsible answer includes acknowledging limits and directing you to the appropriate clinician.

Ask how the doula handles differing preferences between you and a clinician. Their job is not to speak over the care team or make decisions for you. They can help you formulate questions, understand general information within their training and remember your stated preferences while the clinical team handles diagnosis, monitoring and treatment.

Get precise about availability and continuity

Define the on-call window

Do not accept “I am on call” as a complete answer. Ask the exact date or week when on-call coverage begins and ends, whether the doula has other clients due at the same time, and what happens if labor starts before the on-call period. Ask when they will join you, where they meet you, and whether support begins at a particular labor stage or after a phone assessment.

Ask whether there is a limit on hours, whether the doula remains through a shift change or transfer, and how they handle a labor that lasts much longer than expected. If the contract uses terms such as active labor, established labor or continuous support, ask the doula to define them in ordinary language.

Plan for early labor and remote support

Ask what help is available by phone, text or email before the doula arrives. Find out whether remote guidance is included in the fee, how often you can contact the doula, and what happens overnight. Ask for the steps they recommend when contractions begin, waters break, you have bleeding, or you are unsure whether to call your clinical provider. The doula should direct urgent or medical concerns to your clinician or emergency services rather than treating them.

Meet the backup doula

Ask who covers if the primary doula is ill, at another birth, unreachable or required to leave. Request the backup’s name, experience, contact method and availability, and ask whether you can meet them before signing. A backup plan should also address what happens if no backup is available. DONA International’s 2025 birth standards call for backup arrangements, including the absence of a backup option, to be stated clearly in the contract or letter of agreement.

Ask how the handoff works: which information is shared, who contacts you, and whether the backup follows the same fee and service terms. A vague promise to “find someone” is not equivalent to an identified, reachable backup.

List every prenatal and postpartum service included

Prenatal meetings

Ask how many prenatal meetings are included, when they occur and how long they last. Ask what each meeting covers: getting to know one another, comfort-measure practice, birth-preference discussion, partner preparation, logistical planning or a review of warning signs and clinical contacts. Confirm whether meetings are at your home, the doula’s office, another location or by video.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Labor coverage

Ask exactly when labor support starts, whether the doula comes to your home before you leave for the birth setting, and whether travel between locations is included. Confirm whether the package covers continuous attendance, check-ins only, or a defined number of hours. Ask what happens if you need a cesarean, transfer to another facility or a different type of support than originally planned.

Postpartum contact

Ask how many postpartum visits are included, when they occur and what the doula does during them. Topics may include processing the birth, basic newborn-care information, feeding support within the doula’s training, rest and practical adjustment. Ask what is available by phone after birth and when that contact ends. If you need lactation, mental-health, medical or other specialist care, ask how the doula refers you to an appropriately trained professional.

Examine the fee and written agreement

Request the total package in writing

Ask for the complete fee and an itemized description of what it buys. Compare candidates using the same categories rather than comparing headline prices.

Comparison area Questions to ask each candidate
Visits How many prenatal and postpartum meetings are included, and what are their timing and length?
Labor support When does support begin, where does it occur, and are there hour or travel limits?
Backup Who provides coverage, can you meet them, and what happens if coverage cannot be arranged?
Remote contact Are calls, texts and emails before and after birth included, and during what period?
Additional charges Can travel, unusually long labor, extra visits, overnight support or a change of setting add fees?
Replacement and refunds What happens if the doula is unavailable, you cancel, your plans change or the contracted services cannot be delivered?

The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal local price benchmark. Fees and insurance arrangements vary by location and provider, so ask each candidate for their current written package and compare like with like.

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Ask about long labor and changed plans

Ask whether an unexpectedly long labor costs more, when any additional charge begins and how you would be notified. Ask what happens if labor starts outside the on-call window, if you decline attendance after calling the doula, or if a transfer or procedure changes the planned support. The answer belongs in the agreement, not only in a verbal conversation.

Read cancellation, refund and replacement terms

Before paying, read the sections covering deposits, cancellation, refunds, replacement and failure to provide services. Ask who keeps a deposit if you cancel, whether a medical change affects the fee, and how quickly a refund is issued when the doula cannot fulfill the contract. Ask whether the backup works under the same terms. Request clarification of any phrase you cannot interpret without legal or financial guesswork.

Confirm role boundaries and referral practices

A birth doula provides physical, emotional and informational support. Under DONA’s standards, clinical tasks, diagnosis and treatment are outside the birth-doula scope. Ask which services the candidate does not provide, what they do when a need exceeds their training or capacity, and which professionals they contact for referrals.

  • A doula should not diagnose a complication, interpret monitoring as a clinician, prescribe or administer treatment, or tell you to ignore medical advice.
  • A doula can help you express preferences, ask questions, use comfort measures and seek appropriate clinical attention.
  • Ask whether any additional credential, such as a separate professional license, applies to services the doula offers beyond birth support.

Clear boundaries protect you and make cooperation with the clinical team easier.

Compare candidates systematically

After each interview, write the answer beside the same criteria. A simple comparison prevents a warm personality or attractive price from hiding a gap in availability or contract terms.

Criterion Evidence to record
Training and experience Training location, certification status, years supporting births and experience relevant to your situation.
Personal fit Communication style, comfort in your space, respect for your choices and approach to partner involvement.
Availability On-call dates, response expectations, arrival point, hour limits and early-labor plan.
Continuity Named backup, opportunity to meet them and written plan if backup is unavailable.
Services Number and timing of prenatal and postpartum visits, labor coverage and remote contact.
Cost and terms Total fee, included items, possible extras, cancellation, refund and replacement provisions.
Role clarity Clinical boundaries, referral process and communication with your care team.

Choose the candidate whose documented terms and working style fit your priorities. A directory listing or certification can help you find people to interview, but it cannot replace this conversation.

Signs to pause before booking

  • The doula will not identify a backup or explain what happens when no backup is available.
  • “On call” has no dates, response plan or explanation of when attendance begins.
  • The fee is discussed without a written list of visits, labor coverage and possible added charges.
  • The doula promises a particular medical outcome, discourages appropriate clinical care or presents personal preferences as rules.
  • The doula cannot explain what is outside their training or becomes defensive when you ask about boundaries.
  • You feel pressured to sign before reading the agreement or uncomfortable imagining this person in your birth space.

These are reasons to seek clarification or interview another candidate, not proof of a particular outcome. Your comfort and ability to ask direct questions are part of the fit.

A practical interview sequence

  1. Send a short introduction. Share your due date, location, intended care setting and the kind of support you are considering.
  2. Ask the training and philosophy questions. Discuss relevant experience, comfort measures, partner support and communication style.
  3. Map the coverage. Get the on-call window, labor-start rules, remote support, hour limits and backup details.
  4. Inventory the package. Confirm prenatal meetings, labor attendance, postpartum visits and referral support.
  5. Review money and risk. Obtain the total fee and written cancellation, refund, long-labor and replacement terms.
  6. Check boundaries. Ask how the doula coordinates with clinicians and responds to needs outside their scope.
  7. Take time to decide. Compare written answers, meet the backup if possible, and sign only after every important term is clear.
