In a June 2024 interview, Thomas Markle said he did not expect to hear from Meghan Markle or Prince Harry before his 80th birthday. He also said he wished their family situation could be worked out and that he was willing to try. What Thomas Markle said in the interview
Caroline Graham’s feature for PerthNow, published on 23 June 2024, reported on Thomas Markle ahead of his 80th birthday on 18 July. He said, “I don’t expect to hear from Meghan and Harry.”

In the same interview, he expressed a wish to resolve the estrangement: “I wish we could have worked this situation out. I was always ready and willing to do that.” The headline’s bleak framing should be read alongside that statement: he said he did not expect contact, but also described himself as willing to work things out.
What he said about meeting his grandchildren
Markle told the feature, “I would love to meet my grandchildren, but I would be happy with a photograph at this stage.” This was his expressed hope in the 2024 interview, not confirmation of what other family members wanted or planned.

The feature says the estrangement began in 2018, when Thomas Markle was unable to walk Meghan down the aisle after suffering two heart attacks before her wedding to Prince Harry. It also reports that he had not met his grandchildren by the time of the interview. These are details as presented in that report, rather than independently established facts here.
The article also recounts Markle’s account of the paparazzi photographs taken before the wedding. Referring to them, he said: “It was a mistake and I have apologised for it repeatedly.”
