The “Go back to the Grid” trailer coverage points to TRON: Ares, a standalone sequel that flips the franchise’s familiar direction: this time, a digital program enters the real world. The film opened theatrically on October 10, 2025, so that date is now historical context—not an upcoming release.
What is TRON: Ares about?
The official premise, reproduced by Ars Technica, describes Ares as a highly sophisticated program sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission. The story marks humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings.
That setup reverses the original TRON’s central movement. In the 1982 film, a human is drawn into a digital world; TRON: Ares brings a program out of that world and into physical reality. The “Grid” reference is a return to the franchise’s digital setting, while “worlds will collide” captures the new direction of the story.
What the trailer coverage establishes
Ars Technica’s April 5, 2025 coverage identifies Jared Leto as Ares and Joachim Rønning as director, and describes the film as a standalone sequel to TRON: Legacy. The Motion Picture Association’s trailer coverage lists principal cast members including Greta Lee, Hasan Minhaj, Evan Peters, Jodie Turner-Smith, Cameron Monaghan, Gillian Anderson, Arturo Castro, and returning Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn.

#1 Best Overall
- Get ready for the electrifying action and adventure of “Tron: Ares.” When a highly sophisticated Program named Ares is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, it marks humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
Rønning described the project as a continuation of the franchise’s design and storytelling legacy: “I’m excited to be part of the Tron franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world. Tron: Ares builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid,”
That is the director’s statement as quoted by the MPA, not a line established as dialogue from the trailer. The phrase “Go back to the Grid” is the coverage’s framing, not a complete plot description.

Release date and music
The cited trailer coverage gave October 10, 2025 as the theatrical opening date. That date has passed. The film’s score was composed by Nine Inch Nails; Interscope lists the TRON: Ares soundtrack on 180-gram 2LP vinyl, along with its track list.

Watching the earlier films can make the directional change easier to appreciate: the original TRON sends a human into a digital environment, while TRON: Ares centers on a program crossing into the physical world. A report on 4K UHD editions of TRON and TRON: Legacy concerns those earlier films only; it does not establish a TRON: Ares disc edition.
