The “ultimate compliment” was simple: when ELLE asked The Kid LAROI what Tate McRae did that made him melt, he replied, “That’s easy. Every time she smiles, it makes me weak.” He also praised her work ethic and said it inspired him. The comments appeared in a 2025 interview, when they were dating; later reporting placed their breakup in July 2025.
The compliment behind the headline
In ELLE’s interview, “The Kid Laroi on His Girlfriend Tate McRae, Ariana Grande, and New Music,” the interviewer asked whether McRae did anything that “just makes you melt.” LAROI answered: “That’s easy. Every time she smiles, it makes me weak.”
That smile remark is the specific compliment behind PerthNow’s description of it as the “ultimate compliment.” It is an affectionate answer to a question about a particular gesture, rather than a broader declaration about their relationship.
He also praised McRae’s work ethic
LAROI spoke about McRae’s career as well as her smile. He called her “the hardest working artist I’ve ever met in my entire life,” adding: “Seeing how hard she works inspires and encourages me to follow along and do the same.”

He said he did not offer that praise simply because she was his girlfriend. The interview also touched on style: he said he asked McRae for her opinions and had grown more confident about what suited him.

That label is historical, not a description of their current relationship. TIME later reported that they broke up in July 2025 and that LAROI appeared to confirm the split on X. The interview provides no basis for drawing conclusions about the reasons for their breakup.

The interview’s focus was personal remarks, but the two artists also share a musical connection. McRae’s album So Close to What? includes “I Know Love,” a collaboration with The Kid LAROI; Billboard Canada also connected the album with their first performance together.
