The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum refers to a Tolkien story thread in which Aragorn pursues and captures Gollum. But the announced title is explicitly a working title, and the studio has not published a detailed synopsis confirming what the film will depict.
What the title refers to in Tolkien’s story
The title echoes “The Hunt for the Ring,” a chapter in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Unfinished Tales. In the events summarized by Tolkien Gateway, Gollum is released from Mordor, Aragorn captures him, and Aragorn takes him to the Woodland Realm. The title’s basic idea is therefore a pursuit of Gollum, with Aragorn as the pursuer in this episode.
Tolkien Gateway’s summary also notes that accounts differ on the chronology. Without specifying which account is being followed, it is better not to attach an exact year to the pursuit. Readers who want the literary context can find the chapter in Unfinished Tales; that reference does not mean the film has been confirmed as a direct adaptation of the entire chapter. What has been confirmed about the movie
In its May 10, 2024 announcement, Embracer Group said Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema would produce two new films set in Middle-earth. It named the first The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, with a footnote identifying that as a working title. Embracer Group’s announcement

- It signals a Tolkien connection: the title points toward the pursuit and capture of Gollum associated with Aragorn.
- It does not confirm the film’s full story: no detailed synopsis in the announcement establishes whether the movie will adapt the whole chapter, follow its chronology in every detail, or focus only on that episode.
- It may change: the announcement labels the title “working title,” rather than explicitly presenting it as final.
The announcement originally described the first film as planned for theatrical release in 2026. That was the schedule stated in 2024, not confirmation of a current release date. Embracer Group’s announcement
