The praise came with caveats: some jokes missed, and at least one reaction thought the cameo count went too far. These were selected social-media posts, not a representative audience poll.
What the premiere-night reactions were—and weren’t
Germain Lussier’s Gizmodo/io9 roundup was published on July 22, 2024, the night of the film’s New York world premiere; press screenings also took place elsewhere. It collected early posts from named writers and entertainment commentators. Their comments capture how those individuals responded before the film’s reported theatrical opening on July 26, 2024—not a measured consensus from critics or moviegoers.

The film is R-rated. Shawn Levy directed and co-wrote it with Ryan Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells. The roundup names Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen in the cast. Read Lussier’s original roundup.
Comedy and gore were part of the same appeal
Several posts paired the film’s jokes with its extreme violence, rather than treating them as separate selling points. Film writer David Thompson called it “the funniest MCU project ever & (of course) the goriest.” Film critic Mike Ryan described it as “the most gory of the three.” Those are personal reactions and rankings, not objective measurements.
#1 Best Overall
- Marvel Studios presents their most significant mistake yet. His days as Deadpool behind him, a listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life. But when his homeworld is threatened, he reluctantly suits up as he tries to convince Wolverine? oh hell, just watch. Warning: Some flashing-lights scenes in this film may affect photosensitive viewers.
Other responses evoked blood-soaked action, foul language, a buddy-action-comedy dynamic, and what one poster called a “sick soundtrack.” Together, they suggest the early enthusiasm was for a deliberately unruly mix of comic banter and violent spectacle. The R rating is relevant context for viewers deciding whether that combination suits them.
Reynolds and Jackman were a central draw
The pairing of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine was one of the clearest sources of excitement in the posts. Thompson called the two “INCREDIBLE” together, while other reactions praised their performances and the relationship between their characters. The roundup presents their on-screen dynamic as a major part of the film’s appeal, not simply a bonus alongside the cameos.

Cameos promised surprises, with a risk of overload
Several posters singled out the cameos as a highlight, and the film’s connection to the Fox era of Marvel movies fed the sense of nostalgia. Ryan called the film “a love letter (hate that term, but that’s what it is) to the Fox era of Marvel movies.” Chris Gallardo said the cameos “mostly fit well enough the story” when present.
Not everyone was convinced that more was better. Michael Lee said the film “Expectedly goes overboard with its cameos.” The reactions therefore point to a trade-off: returning faces and surprises delighted some viewers, while the volume could feel excessive to others. Lussier’s roundup does not identify the cameo performers, so the reactions can be discussed without naming or spoiling them.
Rank #3
- Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman reprise their roles as Deadpool and Wolverine in this superhero action adventure sequel directed by Shawn Levy.
The enthusiasm came with reservations
The roundup’s overall tone was positive, but it included clear qualifications. Lussier wrote, “I had some problems with #DeadpoolAndWolverine but more than anything it’s just so much fun.” Kristian Harloff put the unevenness more directly: “Some jokes hit, some miss. The story works, cameos deliver and I like how everyone can make fun of themselves.”
Those comments matter because they distinguish enthusiasm from an unreserved endorsement. The early posts suggest a film whose comedy and surprises worked well for these viewers, even though not every joke landed and some had problems with it. They do not establish how broad audiences or later reviewers would respond.

What these reactions can tell you before watching
If you’re deciding whether the film sounds like your kind of Marvel story, the posts offer a handful of useful signals, not a guarantee of your own reaction:
- Expect a tonal mix: the reactions repeatedly pair broad comedy with graphic, R-rated action.
- The leads are a major attraction: posters praised the Reynolds–Jackman pairing and their characters’ relationship.
- Surprises are part of the experience: cameos excited many posters, but one response explicitly described them as excessive.
- Keep expectations measured: these are selected premiere-night reactions, and even enthusiastic posters noted missed jokes or other problems.
The roundup’s closing questions remain practical ones for viewers: did these reactions make you more excited or less excited, and can you avoid spoilers before watching? Because the appeal described by posters includes cameos and surprises, waiting to see the film without learning their identities may be especially worthwhile if those reveals matter to you.
