Terry Moore said Howard Hughes was charming, but also a liar who did things that hurt her. In a 2023 interview, she called those acts “unthinkable things” without explaining what they were. The published account therefore records Moore’s personal recollection, not a detailed or independently verified account of specific conduct.
What did Terry Moore say Howard Hughes did to her?
Moore described Hughes as “the most charming man you could ever find,” then added: “He was also a liar. And he did unthinkable things. He did so many things that hurt me.” She also said, “Was he cruel? I guess you could say he was cruel but I didn’t know that he was cruel. He was just too much for me to handle. I was too naive.” These are Moore’s words as quoted in Liz McNeil’s 2023 People interview report, syndicated by Yahoo Entertainment: Yahoo Entertainment’s interview report.
The report does not give examples of the “unthinkable things” or identify particular acts. It would be inaccurate to fill in that gap or treat the phrase as proof of a specific allegation. Moore’s comments convey her view of a painful, complicated relationship; they do not, by themselves, establish what happened.
How Moore described their relationship
Moore, an actor, called Hughes her first love. The interview report says she recalled meeting him in the late 1940s, when she was a young teenage actress, and described their relationship as on and off for eight years. Her account was not simply one of affection: she remembered him as charming and adventurous while also calling him a liar and saying he hurt her.

What is known about Moore’s claimed marriage to Hughes?
Moore said she and Hughes married aboard a ship in 1949, in a ceremony performed by his captain. She was unsure whether it counted as a valid marriage. As the interview quoted her: “I don’t know if it was,” followed by her explanation that it took place on a boat and “but who knows?” The account presents this as her claim, not as a verified marriage.
Fox News reported in 2023 that a Texas court rejected Moore’s marriage claim after Hughes died in 1976, and that his heirs later reached an undisclosed settlement with her in 1984. A settlement does not establish that the marriage was valid. The underlying court record and settlement document are not established by those reports; see Fox News’ account of the claim and settlement.
Moore’s book about the relationship, The Beauty and the Billionaire, is named in the interview report. The report says she characterized the settlement as “not more than eight figures.” That is her reported description, not a disclosed or independently verified payment amount. See the interview report.

What the 2023 interview does—and doesn’t—establish
- It establishes what Moore said: she remembered Hughes as charming and also as a liar, and said he hurt her.
- It does not specify the acts: the interview offers no examples of what Moore meant by “unthinkable things.”
- It distinguishes a personal account from a verified legal finding: Moore’s claimed shipboard marriage, the reported court rejection, and the later settlement are separate parts of the story.
