A rivalry asks people to do two things at once: compete as if the result matters deeply, and share a field, court, track, or set of rules with the person trying to defeat them. That tension is the lesson. Healthy rivalry shows that disagreement does not require contempt, and that respect is demonstrated through conduct rather than claimed as a feeling.
The International Fair Play Committee puts the possibility plainly: “Rivalry on the field does not exclude friendship. On the contrary, friendship could grow from noble rivalries.” The wording describes an opportunity, not a promise. Some rivals become friends; others remain courteous competitors. In both cases, the contest can teach people to recognize an opponent’s effort, accept common limits, and keep the opponent’s humanity in view.
Why rivalry is a useful test of respect
It is easy to sound respectful when nothing important is at stake. A close contest removes that comfort. Players, coaches, and supporters have to manage disappointment, pressure, partial information, and the desire to win while another person’s success blocks their own.
That makes sport a visible test of several questions:

- Can you challenge an opponent’s performance without attacking the opponent’s identity?
- Can you follow rules and accept an official’s decision when it harms your side?
- Can you compete with full effort without treating the other team as an enemy?
- Can you win without humiliation and lose without retaliation?
A rivalry is therefore not automatically virtuous. It becomes constructive when its intensity is contained by shared rules, truthful effort, and regard for the people involved. Fierce support for a team can coexist with those limits; taunting, intimidation, threats, and personal abuse cross them.
What respect looks like in a game
Respect is easier to understand when it is tied to observable actions. A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis by Manuel Tomás Abad Robles, Benjamín Navarro Domínguez, José Antonio Cerrada Nogales, and Francisco Javier Giménez Fuentes-Guerra describes sportsmanship through several dimensions. Those dimensions provide a practical vocabulary for judging a rivalry without relying on vague appeals to “good character.”
Respect for opponents
Recognizing an opponent’s preparation, skill, and effort is not surrender. A defender can study an attacker’s habits, contest every possession, and still acknowledge a well-executed play. Respect also means avoiding language or gestures meant to degrade someone personally because of their race, nationality, sex, disability, religion, appearance, or background.
Respect for rules and officials
Rules create the common activity in which a rivalry exists. Deliberate cheating, exploiting a safety rule, or pressuring an official undermines the contest for everyone. Respect does not require believing every call was correct. It requires disputing a decision through the permitted process rather than threatening, insulting, or attempting to intimidate the referee, umpire, judge, or opponent.
Respect for social conventions
Every sport has customs that make competition workable: starting when instructed, returning equipment, observing a timeout, acknowledging an injury, and accepting the end of play. These conventions are often unwritten, yet they tell participants that the contest is bounded and that the other side is more than an obstacle.

Commitment to participation
Sportsmanship includes making an honest effort and staying engaged with the activity’s purpose. A player who gives up because the score is unfavorable, deliberately performs badly to manipulate a result, or walks away from agreed obligations weakens the shared experience. Commitment does not mean risking injury or ignoring legitimate limits; it means taking the contest seriously enough to participate honestly.
| Dimension of respect | What it looks like | What violates it |
|---|---|---|
| Opponents | Acknowledging skill, competing hard, and separating performance criticism from personal attacks | Dehumanizing insults, discriminatory abuse, or intimidation |
| Rules and officials | Following the rules, accepting decisions, and using formal channels to appeal | Cheating, threats, harassment, or deliberate attempts to manipulate officials |
| Social conventions | Observing starts, stoppages, injuries, equipment norms, and the end of play | Ignoring safety, refusing ordinary courtesies, or prolonging conflict after the contest |
| Participation | Making an honest effort and honoring the commitment to the activity | Deliberate nonperformance, abandonment without cause, or conduct that endangers others |
Fair play is more than staying inside the rules
The Council of Europe’s European Sports Charter makes the distinction explicit. In Article 8, as quoted by the Council of Europe, “The pursuit of sport integrity should commit all stakeholders and […] support fair play, which is much more than playing within the rules. Fair play incorporates the concepts of friendship, respect for others and a sense of fellowship.”
That definition matters because a person can obey the letter of a rule while violating the spirit of the contest. A legal but dangerous collision, calculated humiliation after a score, or a campaign to make an opponent feel unwelcome may not trigger a penalty, yet it damages fair play. Conversely, helping an injured opponent or correcting an accidental advantage can protect the integrity of the game even when no official requires it.

Fair play also distributes responsibility. Athletes are not the only stakeholders. Coaches set the emotional temperature of a team, officials model impartiality, parents and spectators decide what behavior receives approval, and governing bodies determine whether complaints are heard. A respectful rivalry is a system of choices, not a personality trait that a few unusually gracious players possess.
Can rivals become friends?
Repeated competition can create the conditions for friendship because rivals see one another’s effort over time. They learn who trains early, who plays through difficulty, who admits an error, and who protects an opponent from unnecessary harm. That detailed knowledge can replace caricature with recognition.

Shared rules provide another bridge. Even when competitors disagree about tactics or results, they understand the same boundaries and vocabulary. A post-match conversation can begin with a specific play, develop into mutual respect, and eventually become a relationship outside the sport.
The International Fair Play Committee’s statement that “friendship could grow from noble rivalries” captures this possibility without claiming that it is inevitable. Friendship remains voluntary. A person may respect a rival deeply while maintaining distance, and an apparently friendly relationship may still contain unhealthy behavior. The reliable lesson is narrower and more useful: treating an opponent well keeps friendship possible, while contempt closes that door.
How to make a rivalry respectful
Before the contest
- Agree on the boundary. Teams, coaches, and organizers should state that criticism will focus on play, not on personal identity, and that threats, discriminatory language, and harassment are unacceptable.
- Clarify procedures. Explain how players may question a call, report misconduct, request medical help, or challenge an eligibility decision. A known process reduces the temptation to settle disputes through confrontation.
- Set a realistic goal. Winning can be the competitive objective, while a second goal—honest effort, safe play, or disciplined communication—defines success when the score is uncertain.
During play
- Compete for position and possession without targeting the person.
- Stop or alert an official when an opponent appears injured.
- Use the sport’s permitted signals and language instead of sarcasm designed to provoke.
- Accept a call, then return attention to the next legal action.
- Let teammates know when their frustration is becoming unsafe or abusive.
After the result
Winning teams can acknowledge the losing side’s effort without pretending the result does not matter. Losing teams can congratulate a decisive performance without endorsing every call. A handshake, a brief word of thanks, or helping restore shared equipment can mark the transition from contest back to ordinary human interaction. None of these gestures erases disappointment; they prevent disappointment from becoming a reason to punish someone.
For spectators and online supporters
Fans influence what athletes believe their community rewards. Critique a tactic, a decision, or a team’s preparation, but do not direct threats or slurs at an individual. Avoid sharing private information, joining pile-ons, or treating an official’s mistake as evidence that the person deserves abuse. Support can be loud and partisan while still recognizing that opponents and officials are people who must return to their lives after the event.
What the Olympic values add
The Japanese Olympic Committee identifies three Olympic values: “Excellence,” “Friendship,” and “Respect.” Its explanation links the joy of sport, team spirit, and exchange with opponents to stronger human connection and mutual understanding.

These values work as a sequence rather than a choice among alternatives. Excellence asks participants to pursue their best performance. Friendship reminds them that sport is a shared human activity rather than a war between categories of people. Respect supplies the conduct that allows both aims to coexist. Pursuing excellence without respect can produce domination and abuse; friendship without honest competition can become empty politeness. The combination describes a demanding form of participation in which effort and regard reinforce each other.

What evidence can—and cannot—show
Official sports organizations present fair play as a setting in which people can practice shared values. That is a strong reason to design competitions around respect, but it is not proof that rivalry by itself causes friendship or civility in other areas of life.
A June 5, 2026 survey press release from the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute illustrates why careful interpretation matters. In that survey, 75% said it was very important for athletes to show respect toward opponents, while 30% strongly agreed that people with whom they disagree politically deserve respect. The figures preserve the Foundation’s question wording and describe respondents’ stated views. They show a contrast in attitudes toward athletic and political disagreement; they do not demonstrate that participating in sports makes people more respectful in politics.
The 2021 systematic review by Abad Robles and colleagues is similarly useful for defining respectful behavior, not for promising a universal result. It examines respect in young athletes across the dimensions listed above. The review does not, by itself, establish that every sport, age group, coaching method, or rivalry produces the same effect.

Institutional programs offer concrete examples of how these principles can be made visible. The Center on Civility and Democracy at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation & Institute and the Rose Bowl Institute held “Respectful Rivalries: Dialogue on Competition and Civility” in March 2025, bringing together sports leaders from the NBA, NFL, NCAA, and MLS to explore intense competition alongside mutual respect.

The Rose Bowl Institute describes Better Rivals as a joint initiative with the Reagan Institute that uses sportsmanship to promote respectful rivalry on and off the field. These are examples of public efforts to frame rivalry constructively. Their existence shows that organizations are investing in the idea; it does not independently establish what outcomes the programs produce.
What sports can teach about citizenship
The transferable lesson is not that every disagreement should feel friendly. Citizenship includes real differences over goals, values, and policy. Sport offers a manageable model for handling those differences because participants can identify the shared activity, the rules, the officials, and the point at which the contest ends.
Applied outside sport, the model has four parts:
- Name the shared ground. Participants may disagree, but they still belong to the same class, workplace, neighborhood, institution, or civic community.
- Set fair procedures. Clear speaking rules, transparent decisions, and credible appeals prevent disagreement from becoming a contest of intimidation.
- Separate the claim from the person. Attack weak evidence or harmful conduct; do not deny the other person’s dignity.
- Leave room for a future encounter. Most civic relationships continue after one argument or vote. A respectful ending preserves the possibility of cooperation later.
Sport cannot guarantee that people will transfer these habits. It can, however, make the habits observable: how someone responds to a bad call, a narrow defeat, an opponent’s injury, or an unexpected advantage reveals more than a slogan about respect ever could.
When rivalry crosses into hostility
Warning signs include threats, discriminatory chants, coordinated harassment, celebrating an injury, pressuring officials through abuse, and treating an opponent’s humiliation as the main objective. These behaviors are not evidence of deeper passion; they are failures of the boundaries that make competition legitimate.

The lasting lesson
Sports rivalries teach that intensity and respect are compatible when competition is bounded by rules, honest effort, and recognition of the opponent’s humanity. Friendship may grow from repeated noble contests, but it is not owed and cannot be manufactured. The dependable achievement is a rivalry in which people challenge one another fully, protect the integrity of the game, and finish able to meet again without hatred.
