Song Hye-kyo said filming The Glory’s scar-reveal scene was physically demanding: Netflix reported that special-effects makeup took four to five hours to apply each time, and that Song followed a strict diet for three days before filming and stopped drinking water the day before. She said she wanted the scene to show how hurt and broken her character, Moon Dong-eun, was.

What Song Hye-kyo said about preparing for the scar scene

In a behind-the-scenes account published on March 15, 2023, Netflix reported that the burn-scar makeup for Dong-eun took four to five hours to apply each time. The same article recounts Song’s preparation: she followed a strict diet for three days before filming the scene in which the scars would be visible and stopped drinking water the day before. These are details from Netflix’s report of Song’s experience, not general guidance for performers.

Song described the physical strain and the acting choice behind the moment: “It was very tough going through that scene because of the physical toll it took on me. But it ended up being more impactful and I really wanted to convey how hurt and broken Dong-eun was.” Read Netflix’s behind-the-scenes account.

Who Dong-eun is in The Glory

Song plays Moon Dong-eun, the drama’s central character. The Glory follows her long-planned revenge against five former classmates who tormented her as a teenager. Netflix’s announcement identified Lee Do-hyun as Joo Yeo-jeong, with Kim Eun-sook writing and Ahn Gil-ho directing. The announcement also noted that the series reunited Song with Kim, who had written Descendants of the Sun.

Song also spoke about the character’s capacity to act rather than remain defined by despair: “However, I also wanted to show that a character like Dong-eun can make something happen. Life doesn’t have to end in misery or despair, Being able to portray her was a huge honor.” The wording and punctuation here follow Netflix’s published quotation. Netflix’s series announcement.

How the series was released

Netflix released The Glory in two parts, totaling 16 episodes: Part 1 debuted on December 30, 2022, and Part 2 arrived on March 10, 2023. Netflix reported that Part 1 remained on its Top 10 Non-English TV List for five weeks after its debut. The company also said the series became its most-viewed title of the week three days after Part 2’s release. Those are historical Netflix rankings, not current performance figures. What writer Kim Eun-sook said about the story

In a 2023 interview originally published by Cine21 and republished by the Korean Film Council, writer Kim Eun-sook said a question from her daughter helped lead her to the story. Kim described imagining Moon Dong-eun and victims of school violence she had learned about as her own daughter while considering their choices. That is creator context, separate from Song’s account of preparing for the scene.

Kim said, “The Glory was a story I wanted to write, regardless of its commercial success.” She also reflected that “The Glory touched upon societal issues and was fortunate to be well-received in many ways.” Read the Korean Film Council’s interview with Kim Eun-sook.
