Sigourney Weaver’s reported concern was about filming a kiss with Jack Champion while he was 14 or 15—not about Kiri and Spider’s fictional relationship. According to a statement Weaver gave to The Hollywood Reporter, reproduced by CinemaBlend, the production arranged for other people to perform the kiss. In an official Avatar interview, Weaver described Kiri’s connection with Spider as “very simple but real.”
What did Sigourney Weaver object to?
Weaver said she would not kiss Champion in real life because of his age during production. In the account reproduced by CinemaBlend from The Hollywood Reporter, she said: “Obviously I wasn’t going to kiss Jack, who was 14 or 15, in real life.” She added that they asked Champion to choose someone Weaver could kiss, and that she imagined the production later chose “someone appropriate” for him.

The distinction matters: the reported concern was about the real-life actors and how the scene was staged. The account does not establish that Weaver objected to Kiri and Spider becoming romantically close in the story. The original Hollywood Reporter page was not available for independent verification; the kiss-related statement is therefore attributed here through CinemaBlend’s reproduction.
How was the kiss staged?
Weaver’s reported account describes using stand-ins rather than having her and Champion kiss each other. She said the scene needed to be handled delicately because it included a kiss, and said she was glad it remained in the film: “when I saw it, I believed it.” Her explanation concerns the production arrangement, not a claim that the characters’ relationship should be removed.

What has Weaver said about Kiri and Spider’s relationship?
In an official interview on Avatar.com, Weaver spoke warmly about Kiri’s bond with Spider, her best friend. She said: “So to particularly see the innocence of that joy she has with her best friend Spider, I found that very simple but real.” That comment offers direct context for how she viewed the characters’ connection, distinct from her reported concern about filming the kiss.

Avatar: Fire and Ash, directed by James Cameron, was released on December 19, 2025. The official film page lists a PG-13 rating and a runtime of 3 hours 15 minutes. Disney describes the story as taking place shortly after Avatar: The Way of Water, as the Sully family grieves Neteyam. D23 places the story a few weeks later and says Spider lives among the Sully children, with the family setting out to take him to High Camp.

Weaver plays Kiri, and Champion plays Spider. Disney’s feature describes Spider growing closer to Kiri, Lo’ak, and Tuk while Neytiri ostracizes him in her grief. That context helps explain why the characters’ relationship and the kiss scene have attracted attention, but it does not change the distinction between a fictional romance and an actor’s boundaries while filming.
