What Should You Do If You Encounter a Large Predator on Safari?

Follow your guide or ranger immediately, obey the park’s rules, do not approach the animal, and stay within the permitted safe boundary. In a safari vehicle, remain inside with doors closed and every part of your body inside. On foot, stay on the designated trail with the required trained or armed escort. There is no single species-neutral maneuver that official guidance applies to every predator charge, so do not improvise over your guide’s instructions.

The first decision: are you in a vehicle or on foot?

A “predator encounter” does not have one universal procedure. The appropriate boundary and the people responsible for directing you depend on the setting, the park and the local rules. The official material considered here describes two different situations: game viewing from a safari vehicle and a guided walking safari.

Encounter setting Required boundary Who directs the response Rules documented in the cited guidance
Safari vehicle Remain inside the vehicle; keep doors closed and all body parts inside Your guide, together with the park’s rules SANParks’ general visitor rules and the Addo Elephant National Park guide’s operating instructions
Guided walking safari Stay on a designated trail and with the required escort Your trained guide or armed ranger Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) guidance for walking safaris

These are not interchangeable policies. SANParks’ general rules apply across its parks with local variations, while the detailed vehicle and charge-preparation material quoted below is specifically for Addo Elephant National Park. TANAPA’s walking-safari requirement is Tanzania-specific. Always treat the authority and guide for the park you are visiting as the controlling source.

What to do immediately

  1. Stop and listen. Give your guide or ranger your full attention. Their briefing and directions are the operational plan for that location.
  2. Do not move toward the animal. Do not try to close the distance, surround it, block its route or provoke a reaction. TANAPA warns that all wild animals are dangerous and says not to approach them too closely.
  3. Keep the environment quiet. TANAPA advises avoiding shouting, loud noise and music. A quiet group also makes it easier to hear a guide’s instructions.
  4. Stay inside the permitted boundary. In a vehicle, that means inside with doors closed and your body inside. On foot, it means remaining with the escort on the designated trail.
  5. Do not substitute a memorized “charge” trick for local direction. The official material reviewed does not establish one response that works for every predator, distance, terrain or encounter type.

If the predator is near your safari vehicle

Remain inside and close every door

SANParks states that, in most parks where dangerous animals may pose a threat, visitors may leave vehicles only in designated areas. Its rules require guests to keep body parts inside and doors closed. The Addo guide gives the same practical instruction in more detail: guests should not stand up, get out unless instructed, or hang body parts out of the vehicle.

That includes arms, hands, heads and cameras or other equipment held outside the vehicle. Do not lean through an opening to obtain a closer view. The safe boundary is the vehicle’s normal occupied shape, not the edge of a window or the end of an extended arm.

Do not change the vehicle’s familiar shape

The Addo Elephant National Park guide explains why the boundary matters: “Animals are not threatened by a vehicle, but once a person steps off (or hangs out of) a vehicle, this changes the familiar shape and signals danger.” The point is not that a vehicle makes every encounter harmless. It is that remaining inside preserves the condition the animal is accustomed to seeing, while a person standing outside can alter the encounter.

The guide also says that animals have the right of way and that guides and guests are observers who should keep disturbance to a minimum. Your role is therefore passive: watch without trying to control the animal’s movement or obtain a better angle.

Let the guide manage positioning and movement

If a guide asks the driver to wait, move or leave, follow that instruction promptly and without debate. The Addo operating guide tells guides to leave an escape route open when viewing dangerous game, read the animals’ reactions and avoid provoking them. Those are guide responsibilities, requiring training and a view of the whole vehicle and terrain. Passengers should not attempt to direct the vehicle, open a door or suggest a shortcut.

If the animal comes close, the same rules continue to apply: remain seated or otherwise inside the vehicle as instructed, keep doors closed, keep all body parts in and remain quiet. Do not assume that a predator’s calm appearance means you may exit, stand or approach.

If you encounter a predator on a walking safari

Stay on the designated trail with the escort

TANAPA says walking safaris must take place on designated trails and be accompanied by an armed ranger. Do not leave the trail to obtain distance, a photograph or a different view. Do not split from the group, run ahead or walk back alone. The ranger is the person responsible for interpreting the situation and directing the group under that park’s procedures.

Do not approach or provoke wildlife

Keep the separation your guide establishes. Do not shout, play music, throw anything, make deliberate gestures toward the animal or attempt to draw its attention. TANAPA’s warning that wild animals are dangerous is a reason to avoid experimentation, not an invitation to identify how close is “too close.” The guide’s instruction and the park’s boundary are the practical limits.

Follow instructions rather than improvising

Walking-safari rules are not automatically identical from one country or park to another. The cited TANAPA guidance establishes the designated-trail and armed-ranger requirements for Tanzania, but it does not define every possible response to every predator. If your ranger gives a specific instruction, carry it out calmly and immediately. Do not replace it with advice remembered from a different park, a different species or a video watched before the trip.

What if the animal appears agitated or charges?

This is the point at which confident-sounding generic advice can become dangerous. The official material reviewed describes how guides prepare and monitor an encounter, but it does not provide one complete passenger action plan that covers every predator, vehicle, walking route and charge.

The Addo guide says guides should brief guests about dangerous animals and what to do if an animal charges. It also directs guides to watch for behavior that may signal an imminent charge, preserve an escape route, read the animals’ reactions and avoid provoking them. Those instructions are directed to trained guides operating in that park; they are not a universal species-independent maneuver for visitors.

  • Do not get out of a vehicle because an animal appears to be charging or because you think running would be faster.
  • Do not jump from a vehicle, separate from a walking group or move toward cover without the guide’s instruction.
  • Do not shout or make loud noises as an improvised deterrent; TANAPA specifically advises against shouting, loud noise and music.
  • Keep listening for the guide’s next direction. A guide may need to account for other passengers, the vehicle’s route, terrain and the animal’s position before acting.

If you cannot hear an instruction, ask briefly and quietly for it to be repeated rather than guessing. The absence of a universal charge maneuver in these official sources is itself important: any advice that claims one action always works for every large predator and every safari setting goes beyond what these authorities establish.

Briefing and preparation before the drive or walk

Learn the local boundaries

SANParks directs visitors to check park-specific information and conditions. Before departure, find out where leaving a vehicle is permitted, whether doors must remain closed throughout the drive, and which instructions the operator uses if dangerous wildlife approaches. A general rule from another reserve does not override the local park’s rule.

Listen to the operator’s dangerous-animal briefing

The Addo guide says safari operators should brief guests on dangerous animals and what to do if an animal charges. Treat that briefing as mandatory, not ceremonial. It is the time to clarify how the guide will signal that everyone must remain seated, whether movement within the vehicle is allowed and what to do if a guest cannot hear a direction.

Know whether your outing is genuinely a walking safari

A short stop in a designated area is not the same as leaving a vehicle wherever an animal is visible. SANParks’ rules distinguish permitted designated areas from places where dangerous animals may pose a threat. If the guide has not explicitly told you that a location is designated and safe for departure, remain in the vehicle.

Common mistakes that increase risk

  • Standing for a better view: The Addo guide specifically says guests should not stand up. Standing changes the vehicle’s familiar outline.
  • Hanging out of the vehicle: The guide identifies this as behavior that can signal danger and alter the animal’s response.
  • Opening a door “just for a second”: SANParks’ rule is to keep doors closed in the relevant dangerous-animal setting.
  • Leaving at an unofficial stopping point: Exit only in a designated area or when your guide instructs you.
  • Making noise to get attention: TANAPA advises against shouting, loud noise and music.
  • Approaching for a photograph: Both the no-approach rule and the observer principle argue against closing distance for a picture.
  • Assuming advice transfers between parks: The cited sources come from different authorities and jurisdictions. A Tanzania walking-safari rule is not automatically a rule for a South African vehicle drive, and an Addo operating guide is not a universal standard.
  • Trying to manage the animal yourself: The guide or ranger has the responsibility, training and situational view. Passengers should not attempt to block, chase, distract or redirect wildlife.

What the official guidance does—and does not—establish

SANParks’ “Rules & Regulations” visitor page, accessed on 13 October 2026, establishes the general vehicle boundary: remain in vehicles except in designated areas where dangerous animals may pose a threat, keep body parts inside and keep doors closed, while checking park-specific information.

TANAPA’s “Safety in the Parks” brochure, published in 2020 and accessed on 13 October 2026, establishes the no-close-approach and no-loud-noise advice and requires walking safaris to use designated trails with an armed ranger.

SANParks’ “Information for Guides Operating in the Addo Elephant National Park,” a guide PDF posted in 2023, provides the detailed Addo operating context: briefing guests, keeping an escape route open, observing animal reactions, avoiding provocation and watching for signs of an imminent charge. Its explanation of the vehicle’s familiar shape is specific to that guide’s safety rationale.

These sources focus on conduct and rules. They do not provide a reliable probability of a predator encounter or attack, and they do not support a species-by-species formula for what a passenger should do during every active charge. A careful visitor should therefore use the guidance for the situation it actually covers and defer to the local professional for everything else.

The principle to remember

“Remember that animals have the right of way. Guides and guests should respect this natural environment and realise they are observers. Keep disturbance to a minimum.” That statement from the Addo guide captures the safest posture for either setting: do not approach, do not provoke and do not leave the boundary your guide and park authority have set. Follow the guide or ranger immediately, and let trained local staff manage the encounter.
