Sergio Agüero retired from professional football in December 2021, aged 33, after doctors diagnosed cardiac arrhythmia. Since then, his life has included streaming and hotel investments, according to a 2025 interview with The Guardian. That reporting offers a snapshot, not a complete verified list of his current work.
Why Agüero retired at 33
Agüero announced his retirement at a press conference in Barcelona on 15 December 2021. Manchester City reported that he had experienced chest pains and difficulty breathing during Barcelona’s 1–1 match with Alavés in October. He was taken to hospital, diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia and ruled out for three months. The club said he decided to end his career after the diagnosis; his official biography says he made the decision after consulting physicians. Manchester City’s announcement and Agüero’s official biography record the circumstances. These sources do not establish his present health or support speculation about his prognosis.
Retirement brought an abrupt end to a professional career that included a long spell at Manchester City and a move to Barcelona. The Guardian reported in 2025 that he had played 786 games and scored 427 goals by the time he retired; those figures are the newspaper’s account, not a fresh calculation here.
What Agüero has done since leaving football
Streaming
A 6 May 2025 interview in The Guardian described Agüero as having become a streamer during the pandemic. It presents streaming as part of the different routine he has built outside professional football, but does not provide a complete inventory of his current media work. Read the interview.

Investments and business
The same interview reported that Agüero had invested in hotels. A March 2026 profile in El Español also described hotel and office investments, as well as an esports project, but those details are secondary reporting rather than a verified list of his current roles. The available sources do not establish a complete, primary-source-confirmed account of his businesses, media work or esports activities.
His own description of retirement
The Guardian’s 2025 headline quoted Agüero saying, “I don’t miss playing. I’m very comfortable being retired.” The article also quoted him saying, “I can have a gin and tonic in Cannes now.” The remarks convey some of what he values about life after football; the interview also acknowledges that retirement was not the ending he had planned.
