In an interview published June 8, 2009, Gomez told Extra, “He’s one of my good friends,” and, “I’m single — definitely single.” It is the clearest contemporaneous statement from her in the available accounts: Extra’s interview.
Lautner’s answer did not confirm or deny a romance
When Teen Vogue asked Lautner about his “alleged early summer romance” with Gomez in an August 30, 2009 profile, he replied, “She’s a great girl.” The answer was complimentary, but it did not clarify whether they had dated: Teen Vogue’s profile.

Why did they split?
Gomez later attributed at least part of the separation to unwanted attention. In a March 20, 2025 retrospective, Elle quoted her recalling that paparazzi followed both of them when they went out to lunch or dinner. She said they wanted to do ordinary things, “go bowling and stuff,” but “it went a little too far” and “People were getting a little crazy about us.” This is Gomez’s explanation as reported by Elle; it does not establish paparazzi attention as the sole cause: Elle’s retrospective.

Elle also recounted a LaineyGossip report claiming Lautner left Vancouver without telling Gomez and that his parents did not want his career to take second place to a girlfriend. That is an unverified gossip account, not a fact confirmed by either person in the cited interviews.
