In his first interview after Buckingham Palace announced King Charles III had cancer, Prince Harry said he had spoken with his father, flown to see him, and was grateful for the time they spent together. He also said illness can bring families together—but his comments expressed a hope, not confirmation of a family reconciliation.
What did Prince Harry say about his father’s diagnosis?
In an interview with ABC News journalist Will Reeve for Good Morning America, which aired on 16 February 2024, Harry described making a quick trip to see the King after the diagnosis became public.
“I jumped on a plane and went to go see him as soon as I could,” Harry said. He added: “I love my family. The fact that I was able to get on a plane and go see and spend any time with him, I’m grateful for that.”
Asked whether the illness might bring the family closer, Harry said: “Throughout all of these families, I see it on a day-to-day basis, the strength of the family unit coming together.” He continued: “So, yeah, I think any illness, any sickness, brings families together. I see it time and time again, and that makes me very happy”.

When did Harry visit King Charles?
Buckingham Palace announced the diagnosis on 5 February 2024. Contemporary reports said Harry traveled from California to London the following day and visited his father at Clarence House. ITV News and The Guardian reported that the meeting lasted about 45 minutes; that duration was reported by the outlets, not confirmed by the Palace. The Guardian also reported that Harry did not meet Prince William during that visit.
Harry did not share details of his father’s outlook. Asked about it in the interview, he said: “That stays between me and him.” He also said he had other trips planned that would take him through or back to the UK and that he would visit his family as much as he could, as reported by The Guardian.
What Buckingham Palace disclosed about the cancer
The Palace said tests had identified “a form of cancer” after a separate issue was noticed during the King’s hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement. The statement did not name the cancer type. It said treatment had begun and that Charles would pause public-facing duties while continuing State business and official paperwork.
The Palace’s 5 February statement said: “His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.” The statement described the cancer as a separate issue from the prostate enlargement; it did not say Charles had prostate cancer.
