Prince Harry brought Meghan Markle a box of cupcakes on their second date, which Meghan later said took place on July 4, 2016. In Harry’s memoir Spare, as quoted by Marie Claire, he describes them as red, white, and blue cupcakes for U.S. Independence Day.
The patriotic surprise was a box of cupcakes
Meghan recalled the date in a social post quoted by The Independent: “Our second date was the 4th of July 2016 and H brought me cupcakes to celebrate.” She added that their children had joined the tradition in later years.
Harry’s account in Spare, reproduced by Marie Claire, adds the colors and the moment: Meghan opened a pink box to find “Red, white, and blue cupcakes” in honor of Independence Day. That detailed description comes from the memoir passage as reproduced by the magazine.
What Harry and Meghan said about the early dates
In their November 2017 engagement interview, Harry and Meghan said a mutual friend introduced them and that they went on two dates in London at the beginning of July 2016. Meghan described the setup as a blind date.

Harry later reflected on the second date during an appearance with James Corden, saying, “The second date I was starting to think wow this is pretty special,” according to The Independent. Vogue’s relationship timeline also places a second date after their early-July blind date. The identity of the mutual friend has been speculated about in media coverage, but the couple’s interview does not name that person.
