Yes—X-Ray Recaps is a real Prime Video feature that uses generative AI to produce short, context-aware text summaries of episodes, seasons and the story so far. Amazon announced it on November 4, 2024, initially as a beta for U.S. Fire TV customers, so calling it “new” now needs that date qualification. It is also different from the newer Video Recaps feature, which creates narrated visual summaries.
What X-Ray Recaps is
X-Ray Recaps extends Prime Video’s existing X-Ray system. Traditional X-Ray can show cast information, soundtrack details, trivia and production information. X-Ray Recaps adds an AI-generated plot refresher inside that viewing experience.
It is designed for practical situations: you forgot where you stopped, returned to a series after several months, missed a scene, or want a reminder before starting a new season. It is a controlled summarization feature, not an open-ended chatbot that can explain every Prime Video title on demand.
Amazon describes the feature here: Amazon’s X-Ray Recaps announcement.

What it can recap
Depending on the title and viewing configuration, Amazon says X-Ray Recaps can cover:
- The episode you are watching.
- The season so far.
- A previous season.
- An entire season.
- A portion of an episode, using your current playback context.
Those are intended recap scopes, not a promise that every show displays every option. The choices can vary by title, device, app version, account, region and rollout status.
| Recap option | Best for | Potential spoiler boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Current episode | You missed or forgot part of the episode | Usually limited to that episode or viewing context |
| Season so far | You are returning midseason | May reveal everything up to the covered point |
| Previous season | You are starting a new season | Reveals the prior season |
| Full season | You have finished and want a complete refresher | High if you have not finished the season |
How Amazon says the AI works
Amazon says the system analyzes video segments together with subtitles or dialogue. Its stated technology stack combines Amazon Bedrock foundation-model services with custom models trained using Amazon SageMaker. Guardrails are applied to keep summaries concise and focused on the viewer’s context.

- Open a supported TV series in Prime Video.
- Go to the show’s detail page, or start playback.
- Open the X-Ray experience while watching; pausing can make the controls easier to find.
- Select X-Ray Recaps, or the recap control if Amazon uses a different label on your app.
- Choose the available scope, such as the current episode, season so far or previous season.
- Read the generated text summary before continuing.
Amazon’s interface differs between Fire TV, mobile, browser, smart-TV and game-console apps. A missing button is not proof that your subscription is malfunctioning.
X-Ray Recaps versus Video Recaps
The similar names describe different products. Amazon announced Video Recaps on November 19, 2025. It creates visual season catch-ups using selected clips, narration, dialogue snippets and music. At launch, Amazon described it as a beta for select English-language Prime Originals in the United States.

Is it spoiler-safe?
Amazon says guardrails are intended to keep X-Ray Recaps spoiler-free and relevant to your current context. That is a product claim, not an independently verified guarantee. A full-season recap is inherently spoiler-heavy if you have not completed the season, while “season so far” is safer for a viewer who is still watching.

Choose the scope deliberately. For a finale, mystery or plot with major reveals, avoid a broader recap than your actual stopping point.

Where it is available
Amazon’s original rollout named Amazon MGM Studios Originals including Daisy Jones & the Six, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Wheel of Time and The Boys. That does not mean every Prime Video program supports the feature. Prime Video also contains licensed shows, channel programming, rentals, purchases and live content.
The launch began with U.S. Fire TV customers, with additional devices promised. Amazon’s general device documentation says supported features vary by device model and configuration: Prime Video device support. As of August 16, 2026, official material does not establish universal coverage across titles, devices or countries.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the recap option is missing
- Confirm you opened a TV series rather than a movie, rental or channel program.
- Check the show’s detail page as well as the in-playback X-Ray controls.
- Pause playback and open X-Ray again.
- Update the Prime Video app and your device software.
- Sign out, then sign back in.
- Try another episode or season; support can be title-specific.
- Try an officially supported Fire TV device or another supported platform.
- If X-Ray itself is unavailable, your device may not support the relevant X-Ray functions.
Reinstalling the app cannot guarantee access if Amazon has not enabled the feature for your title, account, device or region. Buying a Fire TV device solely for Recaps is therefore a gamble; test your existing setup first.

How reliable are the summaries?
Amazon publishes its architecture and spoiler safeguards, but not an accuracy percentage, completeness standard, correction process or guarantee that every recap is factually correct. AI compression can omit context, confuse chronology or misidentify a character.
Reported errors in the later Video Recaps product—including an incorrect description of Fallout’s setting—led to coverage that Amazon had paused or reconsidered that rollout. Those reports concern Video Recaps, not proof that every X-Ray Recap is wrong, but they show why neither format should be treated as an authoritative episode guide. See TechRadar’s report.
Use X-Ray Recaps as a convenience refresher. For intricate mysteries, continuity checking, reviews or a recap immediately before a major finale, rewatch the relevant scenes or consult an official episode guide.
When it helps—and when it does not
Good use cases
- You remember the premise but not the details.
- You want a quick refresher without leaving Prime Video.
- You are returning after a long break.
- You want to avoid web searches that may reveal future plot points.
Poor use cases
- You need a complete, scene-by-scene account.
- The story depends on subtle visual clues, unreliable narration or exact chronology.
- You need a definitive source for an essay, review or fan wiki.
- You cannot tolerate even a small spoiler or factual mistake before a finale.
Alternatives
- Rewatch the previous episode or its “previously on” segment.
- Use official studio or network episode guides.
- Check the show’s Prime Video detail page and bonus material.
- Use a reputable recap site with a clearly stated spoiler policy.
- Use traditional X-Ray for cast, soundtrack, trivia and production information; it is not a plot-summary replacement. See Amazon’s explanation of traditional X-Ray.
Verdict
X-Ray Recaps is a useful built-in refresher for eligible Prime Video titles, particularly when you have forgotten where you left off. Its text summaries are faster than a rewatch, but availability is conditional and Amazon provides no published accuracy guarantee. Treat the feature as a helpful convenience—not a definitive substitute for the episode itself.
