Paula Deen reportedly revisited her past public dispute with Anthony Bourdain in the documentary Canceled: The Paula Deen Story, saying he “didn’t like anybody, not even himself,” according to AOL’s indexed report. That remark is reported years after their exchanges in 2011 and 2012; those disputes predated Bourdain’s death in 2018.
What Paula Deen reportedly said
AOL’s indexed report attributes the line “Didn’t like anybody, not even himself” to Deen in the context of Canceled: The Paula Deen Story. AOL’s page could not be accessed directly, and the documentary footage or a transcript was not independently reviewed, so the quotation should be understood as AOL’s reporting rather than a directly verified transcript.
How the Deen–Bourdain dispute unfolded
2011: Deen responds to Bourdain’s criticism
The public exchange was underway by August 2011. TV Guide reported that Deen said she had never met Bourdain and was surprised by his comments. “I was actually kind of shocked considering I’ve never met Anthony,” she said, according to the report. She also invited him to her home for a meal.
2012: Another pointed exchange
In March 2012, Deen told the New York Post, “Anthony Bourdain needs to get a life,” CBS reported. Bourdain later said he would stop responding to questions about which Food Network cooks he considered the worst: “Next time I’m asked (for the millionth time) who the worst cooks on Food Network are, I’ll just shut up.”

The documented dispute dates to 2011 and 2012, years before Bourdain died in France in 2018. CBS reported his death as an apparent suicide while he was working on CNN’s Parts Unknown. The available reports establish no connection between the old public exchange and his death, and none should be inferred.
