Robert Shapiro later recalled that O.J. Simpson leaned over after the verdict and whispered: “You had told me this would be the result from the beginning. You were right.” Shapiro recounted the exchange in a 2016 interview; it was his recollection, not a recording of Simpson speaking.
What Shapiro said Simpson told him
In a 2016 interview with Megyn Kelly, Shapiro answered her question about what Simpson had whispered: “You had told me this would be the result from the beginning. You were right.” The Fox News transcript records Shapiro giving those words as part of his account of the moment.
Contemporary reports by the Los Angeles Times and ABC News also reproduce the quote. They report Shapiro’s later account; the sources do not provide an independent recording or contemporaneous transcript of the whisper.
Which verdict Shapiro was describing
The jury found Simpson not guilty in the criminal case involving the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman on October 3, 1995. The Associated Press account of the acquittal dates the verdict and identifies the victims. Shapiro’s reported words refer to that verdict.

What the quote does—and does not—establish
As Shapiro remembered it, Simpson was telling his lawyer that Shapiro had predicted the outcome correctly. The quote does not, by itself, establish what Simpson intended beyond those words, how he felt, or any broader meaning. It is best presented as Shapiro’s recollection from an interview more than 20 years after the verdict.
Kelly also asked Shapiro about Simpson laughing and posing for photographs after the verdict. Shapiro said he considered that behavior inappropriate because two people had died and respect was due to Simpson’s former wife. That was a separate exchange in the interview, not part of the whispered remark.

For broader background, Jeffrey Toobin’s nonfiction book The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson covers the case and trial, according to its publisher. It is background reading, not a source verifying the exact whispered words.
Screen follow-ups serve different purposes: FX describes The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story as a dramatized series based on Toobin’s book, while PBS FRONTLINE’s The O.J. Verdict examines the trial and the verdict’s broader implications. Neither replaces Shapiro’s interview as the source for the quote.
