Neo used a modified Nokia 8110 in the original The Matrix (1999). It is often mistaken for the Nokia 7110 because the film prop’s cover snapped open like the 7110’s spring-loaded slider; a standard retail 8110 opened manually.
The short answer: Nokia 8110
The handset most closely associated with Neo, played by Keanu Reeves, was based on the Nokia 8110, a curved GSM phone introduced in 1996—three years before the film. Its unusual shape earned it the informal nickname “banana phone.” Nokia’s historical archive lists the 8110 among its 1996 phones.
The phone was a memorable piece of visual design as well as a recognizable product placement. Its curved body and protective sliding cover looked distinctive without seeming wholly impossible for a late-1990s mobile phone. In the film’s covert, cyberpunk world, the handset became an instantly legible communication device. Contemporary coverage also connected Nokia’s cultural visibility with product placements such as The Matrix (Wired).

The film prop was not an ordinary retail 8110
The production handset was modified with a custom spring-loaded mechanism so its cover could snap open dramatically on camera. A retail Nokia 8110’s slider was operated manually. The visual trick that many viewers remember was therefore a prop modification, not a standard feature of every 8110. The Mobile Phone Museum’s account of the 8110 describes the distinction.

That matters if you are buying one today: an unmodified vintage 8110 will not necessarily reproduce the film’s opening action. The available evidence supports a modified 8110-family production phone, not a separately marketed “Matrix edition” made for consumers.
Why people confuse it with the Nokia 7110
The 7110 is a real Nokia model, but it was not the phone used in the original film. The confusion is understandable: it looked similar, and its commercial slider had a genuine spring-loaded action. Contemporary reports about the 7110 even compared its appearance with the phone associated with Keanu Reeves, helping blur the distinction (The Guardian, August 1999; The Guardian, December 1999).

The safest wording on the exact variant is that Neo’s prop was based on a modified Nokia 8110-family phone. Most historical references call it the Nokia 8110; some collectors specify the 8110i. Without definitive production documentation, it would be too strong to state the 8110i variant as settled fact. The broader 8110 identification and the distinction from the 7110 are better supported (The Guardian’s Nokia history).
The 2018 Nokia 8110 4G is a revival, not the movie phone
HMD revived the design in 2018 as the Nokia 8110 4G. It brings a curved slider form into a later feature phone, with 4G LTE and a KaiOS-powered app ecosystem; HMD’s product page outlines its features. It is inspired by the original and its film association, but it is neither a 1990s handset nor the modified prop used in The Matrix. Availability varies by market: an active product page does not guarantee local stock, a current price, or compatibility with a particular carrier.

Can you buy one today?
- For collecting or display: Look for a vintage Nokia 8110 or closely related 8110i, and verify the model markings and battery compartment against clear photos. Listings can confuse 8110s and 7110s, and replacement parts or modified covers may affect authenticity. A vintage phone may be a display piece even if it no longer works.
- For the film’s snap-open look: Seek a purpose-made replica or a documented modified prop. A normal 8110 may not have the cinematic spring action. Altering a collectible can damage it or reduce its value.
- For a usable retro-style phone: Consider the 8110 4G only after checking actual local availability and the exact model’s network compatibility. 4G branding alone does not guarantee service: confirm supported LTE bands, VoLTE, SIM configuration, and carrier approval in your country.
- For dependable everyday use: Neither a vintage 8110 nor a scarce revival should be assumed to work reliably on a current network. In the United States especially, verify the exact device with the carrier before purchase; vintage GSM capability by itself is not a promise of present-day service.
If you encounter a “Matrix Nokia 7110” listing, treat the description as a warning to check the model, not as proof of film authenticity. The 7110’s similarity and spring-loaded cover make the claim plausible at a glance, but the first film’s iconic phone is identified as a modified 8110-family handset.
The franchise used other devices in later films; the first movie’s handset should not be generalized to every installment. The Samsung SPH-N270, for example, is associated with The Matrix Reloaded, not the original film.
