Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe lowest-risk choices for a YouTube Live stream are music from YouTube Audio Library, music you created and have the rights to use, or third-party music whose license explicitly covers your livestream. A “free” label, attribution, or a paid subscription alone does not clear a track. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and even licensed music can interrupt a stream if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist.
Music you can use with the least uncertainty
YouTube Audio Library
YouTube recommends the Audio Library in YouTube Studio as a source of copyright-safe music and sound effects. Check the conditions attached to each track, including any attribution requirement, and follow them. YouTube’s tips for finding safe music explain its recommended sources.
Music you created yourself
Your own original music is another option YouTube identifies. Use it only if you control the relevant rights: a co-writer, performer, producer, sample, or backing track may have rights of their own. A track being your recording does not by itself establish that you control every element in it.
Third-party music with a license that covers the stream
Paid or royalty-free music may be usable, but the label is not enough. Read the actual license and confirm that it covers live streaming on YouTube, your channel and relevant territories, and keeping the archived replay. Check any attribution or other conditions, and ask whether the rights owner must add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. License scope varies by provider and rights holder; YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams warns that licensed music may still interrupt an unallowlisted stream.

Music that is not automatically safe
“Free,” credited, or purchased music
A free download, a credit in the description, or a purchase on another site does not by itself make a track copyright-safe or prevent Content ID from flagging it. YouTube cannot infer your license simply from the video. Verify permission for the actual livestream and its replay, rather than relying on a track’s marketing description.
Commercial songs, radio, and streaming services
Access to a song through a radio broadcast or a personal music subscription does not establish that you may rebroadcast it on YouTube Live. The YouTube guidance cited here does not grant blanket permission for these sources. Use them only if you separately hold rights that cover the livestream and any archived copy. A short excerpt or quiet background playback is not a substitute for permission.

Creator Music
Creator Music is not a live-stream licensing option. YouTube says its licenses do not support live content; its licensing and revenue-sharing options apply to eligible long-form videos, not livestreams or Shorts. The cited Creator Music help pages describe availability as limited by region and eligibility, so check YouTube’s current rules for your account and location. Creator Music FAQ and Creator Music usage details.
Check a license before going live
For third-party music, confirm each point before you start. A license and Content ID allowlisting are separate checks: permission on paper does not necessarily stop YouTube’s live detection from interrupting the stream.

- Live use: Does the license expressly permit a YouTube livestream, rather than only a video upload?
- Replay: May you keep the archived stream available afterward?
- Channel and territory: Does permission cover your specific channel and the places where viewers may access the stream?
- Content ID: Does the rights owner need to add your channel to an allowlist? If so, confirm it has done so before broadcasting.
- Conditions and cost: Are attribution, payment, revenue sharing, or other restrictions required?
If the license does not clearly answer a point, ask the rights holder or provider before using the track. Do not assume that a general “royalty-free” description resolves these questions.
What YouTube may do when it detects music
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted material in another live broadcast. If it identifies such content, it may show a placeholder image and warn you to stop using it. If the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream. A stream may also be terminated after a copyright or Community Guidelines strike. These actions can happen even when you believe you have a license if your channel is not on the rights owner’s Content ID allowlist.

Live interruption, Content ID claim, and copyright strike are different
A Content ID claim on an archived livestream is made after the stream ends if you archive it. YouTube says a claim typically does not result in a strike. A valid copyright removal request can result in a strike; YouTube also says that when an active livestream is removed for copyright, the channel receives a copyright strike and live-stream access is restricted. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright strikes and copyright claims.
Strike consequences
YouTube says a strike may expire after 90 days if you complete Copyright School and have fewer than three active strikes. A channel with three active copyright strikes in 90 days is subject to termination. These are YouTube platform rules, not legal advice about whether a particular use is lawful or whether a dispute has merit.

A practical choice for a documentary livestream
If a documentary stream needs background or interstitial music, choose a track from YouTube Audio Library or use original music whose rights you control. If you need a particular third-party track, get written confirmation that the license covers the live broadcast and archived replay, then complete any required Content ID allowlisting before the stream. Keep a copy of the license and any rights-holder confirmation available in case a claim or interruption occurs.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that loops uploaded documentary videos, StreamNeo keeps the stream running from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery helps if YouTube drops the stream. StreamNeo does not clear music rights, so use only music you are permitted to stream.
The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Learn about StreamNeo, or start your free day.
