To connect an Azure VM to a scheduled YouTube stream, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, copy its stream URL and key into encoder software running on the VM, then start the encoder and check the preview in Live Control Room. Select Go live there when the preview is correct. The encoder sends the video to YouTube; the Azure portal does not connect to or control the event.

What you need before connecting

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming: YouTube says the channel must be verified, have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements.
  • A scheduled event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • Encoder software running on the Azure VM, configured for an input source and output profile. The exact controls depend on the encoder.
  • An Azure network path that lets the VM make outbound connections to the internet and YouTube’s ingest service.

Keep the scheduled event and encoder distinct: YouTube Studio creates and monitors the event; the encoder on the VM transmits its media feed.

Schedule the YouTube event and copy its connection details

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live, then open Manage → Schedule stream. Create a scheduled event or reuse settings.
  2. Set the event date and time, visibility, and metadata. Confirm that the event is the one you intend to connect.
  3. Open the event’s stream settings and copy its Stream URL and stream key. If your encoder supports RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than assuming the displayed default URL uses RTMPS. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts RTMP traffic with TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Treat the key as a secret. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it or share it in screenshots or logs. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.

Configure the encoder on the Azure VM

  1. Sign in to or access the Azure VM using your normal administration method, and open the encoder installed on it.
  2. Select a YouTube or RTMPS preset if the encoder offers one. Otherwise, paste the copied server URL into the encoder’s server or ingest URL field and the stream key into its stream-key field.
  3. Select the intended video and audio inputs, then configure the encoder’s output profile for the scheduled stream. Use the protocol, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate supported by both your encoder and the event. The exact settings are software- and stream-dependent; there is no single Azure VM size or bitrate established for every setup.
  4. Save the configuration securely. Avoid placing the key in public scripts, shared configuration files, or terminal output.

Check Azure outbound connectivity

The media connection travels outbound from the VM to YouTube’s ingest service. Sending a stream does not, by itself, require opening an inbound port to the VM. Check the subnet, route table, network security group (NSG), and any firewall rules if the encoder cannot reach the endpoint.

Azure’s defaults have a time-sensitive network caveat: for new virtual networks created using API versions released after March 31, 2026, subnets default to private and VMs need an explicit outbound method to reach public endpoints. Existing virtual networks are not changed by that default. Microsoft lists NAT Gateway, load-balancer outbound rules, a Standard public IP associated with the VM, and firewall or network virtual appliance routing as explicit outbound options. Choose one that fits your network design; these methods are not interchangeable in every architecture. See Microsoft’s default outbound access documentation.

Do not assume the VM has a stable outbound IP. Record the configured egress method in deployment instructions, especially if network controls or allowlists depend on it.

Start the encoder, check preview, then go live

  1. Allow time for setup and testing. YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before the event and starting them at least 15 minutes before it.
  2. Start the encoder on the Azure VM. Wait for Live Control Room to detect the incoming feed and show a preview.
  3. Inspect the preview and stream health, including video and audio. If the preview is not correct, resolve the issue before starting the event.
  4. When the preview is correct, select Go live in Live Control Room. Starting the encoder sends the feed; the deliberate go-live action starts the scheduled event.
  5. At the end, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder as appropriate for your workflow. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Bandwidth and rehearsal checks

YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the total outgoing stream bitrate. If you send both primary and backup streams, include both in the total before adding headroom. Check the actual Azure VM, input path, encoder profile, and outbound network in a rehearsal; a VM’s ability to run the encoder alone does not prove it can sustain your chosen bitrate.

  • Confirm the encoder is sending the intended resolution, frame rate, and audio.
  • Watch Live Control Room for an incoming signal and a clean preview.
  • Test from the same VM, subnet, and egress configuration you will use for the event.

Troubleshoot connection and preview problems

The encoder cannot connect or times out

  • Check outbound access: verify the subnet has a working route to the public internet, and review NSG, route, and firewall restrictions. For a new private subnet, confirm an explicit outbound method is configured.
  • Check the server URL and protocol: make sure the URL belongs to the scheduled event and matches the protocol configured in the encoder.
  • Check RTMPS compatibility: if an RTMPS connection times out or reports an SSL error, YouTube advises checking for a wrong protocol or server URL and whether the encoder supports RTMPS. If it does not, consult the encoder’s documentation and use a protocol supported by both it and the event.

The event does not show a preview

  • Confirm the encoder is running and is using the scheduled event’s URL and key, not details from a different event.
  • Check the encoder’s input selection and output status. A connected encoder cannot provide a useful preview if its selected media or audio input is missing or incorrect.
  • Allow time for the incoming feed to appear. If it remains absent, return to the outbound network, URL, and protocol checks.

The key may have been exposed

Reset the stream key in Live Control Room, replace it in the encoder, and restrict access to any saved configuration that contained the old key.
