Mark Ronson was thanking Greta Gerwig for giving Ken’s big musical number room to be both emotionally sincere and extravagantly theatrical. At the January 14, 2024 Critics Choice Awards, he said Gerwig had carved out “11 minutes” for the sequence “so the boys could cry and hold hands a little too.” The 11-minute figure was Ronson’s estimate in his speech, not an independently verified runtime for the released scene.
What did Mark Ronson say?
Accepting the Critics Choice Award for best song for “I’m Just Ken,” Ronson thanked Ryan Gosling for his performance and then addressed Barbie director Greta Gerwig. He called the sequence a “prog-rock, power-ballad, dream-ballet, shred fest” and said: “The fact that you carved out 11 minutes for this prog-rock, power-ballad, dream-ballet, shred fest so the boys could cry and hold hands a little too, we’re really forever in your debt for that.” People’s report via Yahoo Entertainment covered the award and the speech.
What did he mean by “the boys could cry”?
It was a playful thank-you for a scene that lets Ken express hurt, insecurity and longing, while the other Kens share an emotional moment. Ronson was describing the sequence’s mix of melodrama and male camaraderie, not making a general claim about boys or men.
The joke works because the number is deliberately huge: a rock ballad expands into an elaborate, theatrical set piece, but Ken’s feelings remain sincere within it. Ronson’s phrase captures both sides of that contrast—the spectacle and the vulnerability.

Why is “I’m Just Ken” more than a parody?
Ronson and Andrew Wyatt wrote the song, which Gosling performs as Ken in Barbie. Ronson has said it needed to be earnest and vulnerable, rather than simply mocking Ken. The character’s lyrics give voice to the frustration of being overlooked and to his uncertainty about who he is apart from Barbie. The Los Angeles Times discussed that intention and the song’s production in its interview with Ronson and Wyatt.
Ronson has described Ken’s character in the script as the spark for the song. He recalled the thought behind “I’m just Ken, anywhere else I’d be a 10” as an early starting point, then sent a demo to Gerwig. Ronson and Wyatt developed the song together, and Gosling’s performance shaped how it landed on screen. NPR’s Fresh Air transcript and TIME’s interview with Ronson describe parts of that process.

How did the song fit into the film’s music?
Ronson and Wyatt initially expected to contribute a small number of songs, including one that would reveal Ken’s inner life; their involvement grew to encompass more of Barbie’s soundtrack and score. In that context, “I’m Just Ken” is both a character song and a full-scale musical event. Ronson later discussed the project’s development and soundtrack work with The Guardian. A later Post Magazine interview with Ronson and Wyatt also addressed their songwriting and Ken’s vulnerability.
