Mariska Hargitay says she learned at 25 that Nelson Sardelli, not Mickey Hargitay, is her biological father. Mickey raised her, and she continues to call him her father. She kept the information private for more than 30 years before discussing it publicly in My Mom Jayne, her documentary about her mother, actor Jayne Mansfield, and her family history.
Who is Mariska Hargitay’s biological father?
In her public account, Hargitay identifies singer and performer Nelson Sardelli as her biological father. Mickey Hargitay, the man she grew up believing was her biological father, raised her. The distinction matters: Hargitay has said that learning the truth did not change Mickey’s place in her life. In a Los Angeles Times interview published June 27, 2025, she said, “It doesn’t matter, and nothing can change the fact that Mickey Hargitay is my father.”
When did she learn, and when did she meet Sardelli?
Hargitay says she learned at 25 that Mickey was not her biological father. She described feeling disoriented and said loyalty to Mickey and concern about hurting him contributed to her decision to keep the information private. She met Sardelli at 30. TV Insider reports that she introduced herself to him at one of his performances in Atlantic City, New Jersey; in its May 18, 2025 coverage, the outlet attributes to Hargitay’s Vanity Fair interview Sardelli’s reported response: “I’ve been waiting 30 years for this moment.”
Why did she speak about it in My Mom Jayne?
My Mom Jayne is Hargitay’s documentary about Mansfield and Hargitay’s effort to understand her mother and their family history. Mansfield died in a car crash in 1967, when Hargitay was three, according to the Los Angeles Times interview. Hargitay later confronted how little she knew about her mother and used the film to reconsider their relationship as well as her family story. Asked why she made the documentary when she did, she said, “Why now? Because I was finally ready.”

The paternity revelation is part of the film’s context, not its only subject. Hargitay has described the documentary as a love letter to Mickey. She has also said she told her children, “I don’t want you to have secrets,” reflecting on the silence she had maintained about her own history.
What did Hargitay say about accounts of her mother’s life?
The Los Angeles Times interview identifies Raymond “Rusty” Strait, Mansfield’s former press secretary, and his book The Tragic Secret Life of Jayne Mansfield. Hargitay objects to parts of the book’s account. That is her criticism; the interview does not independently verify the disputed details, so they should not be treated as established facts on its basis.
