In a December 10, 2024, Gizmodo report, Matt Novak documented a burst of memes, videos and other posts after Luigi Mangione was publicly identified in connection with the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The examples ranged from jokes and fan edits to songs, crafts, conspiracy posts and memecoins. They were selected observations, not a measured count of social-media activity, and they do not establish what is circulating now.
What the report says—and what it does not
Novak’s account captured online reactions in the immediate aftermath of Mangione’s identification. At the time of publication, Mangione had been charged with second-degree murder; the report referred to him as the “alleged shooter.” A charge is an accusation, not a finding of guilt.
The report describes examples seen on platforms including TikTok, Instagram, Twitter/X and Bluesky. It provides no platform-wide post count, view total, survey or other statistic that would quantify the word “flooded.” Its examples show the variety of posts Novak encountered, not how representative they were of users overall.
What kinds of memes and videos appeared?
Luigi jokes and a fake Nintendo post
Some jokes paired Mangione with Luigi, the fictional character from Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros. One image appeared to show Nintendo asking for Mangione’s release. It was a photoshopped fake, not an actual Nintendo post; as Novak clarified, “To be clear, Nintendo didn’t send the tweet.”

McDonald’s and the reported arrest location
Other memes referenced McDonald’s because of the reported location of Mangione’s arrest. Novak described altered fast-food signage and related jokes. These were references to the reported arrest location, distinct from the Nintendo character jokes; neither should be confused with verified statements by the companies.
Video edits, sounds and joking alibis
The report describes fan edits, cartoons, existing meme formats and videos set to trending sounds. Some posts jokingly claimed Mangione had an alibi. One TikTok caption said he had been with the poster all day; it was presented as a joke, not evidence about the case.

Songs and murder-ballad-style videos
Musicians including Thomas Francis and Mipso appeared in examples of songs or murder-ballad-style videos. Joe DeVito told Gizmodo that TikTok had removed his song video for a community-guidelines violation while it remained on Instagram at the time of the report. That is a historical account from December 2024, not confirmation of either post’s current availability.
DeVito explained his motivation in a quote that expressed his own view: “With Brian Thompson in the news I had been thinking of the healthcare crisis in the US and realizing more and more how its just a legal form of extortion..” The statement is his opinion, not an independently established description of the healthcare system.

Crafts, appearance posts, conspiracies and coins
Novak also noted posts focused on Mangione’s appearance, crafts inspired by him and his manifesto, and conspiracy theories attempting to find hidden messages. Other posts promoted Luigi-themed or “Deny Defend Depose”-themed memecoins. The report describes these as elements of the online reaction; it does not establish the claims made in conspiracy posts or assess the coins as investments.
How television commentary entered the story
The report set some online celebration alongside a television reaction. Fox News host Laura Ingraham criticized Instagram users celebrating Mangione, saying, “This is a sickness. Honestly, it’s so disappointing. But I guess we shouldn’t be surprised.” Novak then noted that Ingraham pivoted to Daniel Penny and called him a hero after Penny’s acquittal. This is the report’s account of Ingraham’s commentary, not a survey of television coverage or public opinion.

How to read the examples
- A meme is not evidence: the alibi caption was a joke, and the purported Nintendo message was fabricated.
- A reported post is not a trend measurement: selected examples cannot establish how common a reaction was across platforms.
- Availability can change: DeVito’s TikTok removal and Instagram availability describe the status he reported at publication, not today.
- Online celebration is not consensus: the report documents particular posts and one television host’s response; it does not measure what most people thought.
The account is Matt Novak’s contemporaneous report, “Social Media Is Flooded With Luigi Mangione Memes and Videos,” published December 10, 2024. Its examples document a moment in internet culture, rather than a verified picture of current platform activity.
