Tomonobu Itagaki, the game director known for creating Dead or Alive and leading the modern revival of Ninja Gaiden, has died at 58. A message prepared by his family was reported on October 16, 2025. The reports cited here did not establish a cause of death.

Contemporaneous reports published on October 16 and 17, 2025, shared a final message attributed to Itagaki and prepared by his family. The English wording varies between outlets because it is translated. In Nintendo Life’s translation, Itagaki wrote: “My life has been a series of battles. I kept winning.” He also expressed regret that he had not been able to deliver a new work to his fans: “I’m sorry.” Nintendo Life, Gematsu, and GameSpot published differing English renderings.
The reports cited here do not identify a cause of death, so none can be stated.

Dead or Alive
Itagaki joined Tecmo in 1992, initially working as a graphics programmer on the Super Famicom version of Tecmo Super Bowl, according to Game Developer. He created and directed the early Dead or Alive games. The series began in 1996 and became his signature fighting-game franchise. The Guardian also recounts his role in shaping the series.

In an archived interview quoted by Game Informer, Itagaki argued that fighting games should be easier to play to reach a wider audience, while the game—not the underlying system—should be what reaches players. The view reflects a creator focused on how a fighting game meets its audience, rather than treating technical capability as an end in itself.
The modern Ninja Gaiden
Itagaki led the series’ modern revival with 2004’s Ninja Gaiden, transforming a formerly side-scrolling franchise into a 3D action game. That legacy should not be confused with a credit on every later series entry. Game Informer reported that Itagaki was not involved with Ninja Gaiden 4.
How did his career continue after Tecmo?
Itagaki led Team NINJA, the development group associated with his work on Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden. He left Tecmo in 2008 and later founded Valhalla Game Studios, which released Devil’s Third in 2015. He subsequently founded Itagaki Games. Game Developer and GameSpot cover these later chapters.

In a 2001 interview quoted in Game Informer’s obituary, Itagaki said he wanted to bring America “the true meaning of ninja.” The remark captures his ambition for Ninja Gaiden beyond simply reviving a familiar name: he wanted the modern action game to make a distinct impression on players.

Team NINJA said it would carry on the philosophy and creativity Itagaki began and continue making games for players to enjoy. The statement was attributed to the studio, not to a named individual. Nintendo Life and GameSpot reported the tribute.
