Kendrick Lamar addressed Lil Wayne’s disappointment over the Super Bowl LIX halftime-show booking in “Wacced Out Murals,” a track on GNX. Lamar recalls listening to Wayne’s Tha Carter III and raps, “Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down.” Wayne later said he had spoken with Lamar, wished him well and told him to “kill it.” That account of their conversation comes from Wayne; a direct public explanation from Lamar of what he intended by the lyric has not been established.
What Kendrick Lamar said about Lil Wayne
On “Wacced Out Murals,” the opening track of GNX, released November 22, 2024, Lamar raps: “Used to bump Tha Carter 3, I held my Rollie chain proud / Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down.” The line connects Lamar’s admiration for Wayne’s music with the disappointment Wayne expressed after Lamar was chosen to headline the Super Bowl LIX halftime show. HipHopDX reported the lyric when the album was released.

Why Lil Wayne was disappointed
The NFL announced on September 8, 2024, that Lamar would headline the Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, 2025. Wayne had hoped to perform at the game in his hometown. After the announcement, he said the decision hurt and that he blamed himself for assuming the booking would be his without being told it was. He also expressed gratitude for support from fans and fellow artists. The Los Angeles Times reported Wayne’s reaction on September 13, 2024.

The NFL’s announcement identified Lamar as the headliner and included his statement: “Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date. And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.” It did not give a specific rationale for selecting Lamar over Wayne. The NFL’s announcement is the primary source for the booking.
Did Lamar and Wayne talk after the lyric?
Wayne said in an interview on The Skip Bayless Show, reported December 17, 2024, that he had spoken with Lamar, wished him the best and told him he “better kill it.” Wayne also said he had not previously heard the lyric. This is Wayne’s account of their contact, not a statement from Lamar. Us Weekly reported Wayne’s comments.
