Kennedy Jr. was running for president as an independent. The move put several of RFK Jr.’s siblings on the opposite side of his campaign, but it was not a unanimous family statement.
What happened in Philadelphia
The endorsement came during a Biden campaign stop in Philadelphia on Thursday, April 18, 2024. The Associated Press reported that at least 15 Kennedy family members backed Biden and Harris for reelection. That is a reported event count, not a complete, independently verified roster. The Associated Press reported on the endorsement.
Kerry Kennedy, a sister of RFK Jr. and daughter of former attorney general Robert F. Kennedy, delivered the statement. Biden called the support an “incredible honor,” CBS News reported. The endorsers spoke for themselves; their appearance did not establish a position shared by every member of the extended family.
Which Kennedy family members endorsed Biden?
CBS News identified six of RFK Jr.’s siblings among the endorsers:

CBS also reported that other relatives endorsed Biden. The available reporting does not establish a full authoritative list, so the six named siblings should not be mistaken for the complete group. CBS News covered the event and the siblings’ endorsement.
Why they backed Biden
Kerry Kennedy’s appeal to family values
Kerry Kennedy framed the endorsement as support for Biden and Harris and for values associated with her father and uncle. CBS News transcribed her as saying: “We want to make crystal clear our feelings that the best way forward for America is to reelect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to four more years.” The Washington Post prints a slightly different version of the wording, so this quotation follows CBS’s transcription. The Washington Post also reported on Kennedy’s remarks.

Her remarks presented the election as a choice between Biden and Donald Trump. They did not directly address her brother’s candidacy onstage; the contrast came from the public endorsement itself and from relatives’ earlier criticism of his campaign.
Joseph P. Kennedy II’s concern about vote-splitting
Joseph P. Kennedy II made the electoral calculation explicit. Asked by reporters whether he would encourage his brother to drop out, he replied, “Of course,” and said: “We cannot do anything that in any way, strips even one vote from President Biden.” He said the Kennedy name on a ballot could leave Democratic voters feeling torn, and that the family wanted them to know they did not have to feel that way. These were his stated concerns, not a measured estimate of the campaign’s effect on voting.
How RFK Jr. responded
On the morning of the endorsement, RFK Jr. said he was glad his family was politically active, despite their differences. In a social media post, he wrote: “We are divided in our opinions but united in our love for each other.” He also called for civility and respect in public discourse. His response acknowledged political disagreement without presenting it as a personal rupture.

At the time of the Philadelphia event, RFK Jr. was running as an independent in the 2024 presidential race. In August 2024, he suspended his campaign and endorsed Donald Trump. That later decision is part of the campaign’s subsequent history; it was not yet the context for the Kennedy family’s April endorsement.
