Keith Morrison said Matthew Perry had told him he was happy before his death. Perry’s stepfather described that knowledge as a source of comfort, while mourning that Perry did not get to have his “third act.”
What Keith Morrison said about Matthew Perry
In an interview with Hoda Kotb for her Making Space podcast, Morrison recalled that Perry was happy and had told him so. The Los Angeles Times reported Morrison’s remarks on March 13, 2024: “he was happy.” Morrison continued: “And he said so, and he hadn’t said that for a long time. So that gives a source of comfort. But also, he didn’t get to have his third act and that’s not fair.”
What his words mean—and what they do not establish
Morrison was speaking as Perry’s stepfather about a personal family loss. His recollection offers a glimpse of what Perry had told him; it is not an independent assessment of Perry’s mental state. The Independent also reported on the interview on March 13, 2024.
Morrison’s phrase “third act” conveys his sadness that Perry did not have more time for a later chapter of life. The remarks hold that grief alongside the comfort Morrison said he found in Perry’s words.

Matthew Perry’s own account of addiction and recovery
Perry wrote about addiction and recovery in his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. His account provides background on his life in his own words, but it does not independently confirm Morrison’s specific recollection about Perry saying he was happy.
