Reports described the look as a neutral palette, not an unexpected bright color.
What Kate Middleton wore
The Princess of Wales’s coatdress was gray with white detailing and was credited to Tolu Coker, a British-Nigerian designer. The appearance formed part of the opening welcome for Nigeria’s state visit to the U.K. on March 18, 2026. AOL’s report and InStyle’s related coverage identify the designer and describe the outfit.
Related coverage also identifies a matching gray-and-white hat by Jane Taylor and Collingwood pearl earrings associated with Princess Diana’s collection. Another report names Hugo Boss shoes. These are descriptions of the reported look; the sources do not establish that the specific pieces are currently available to buy. InStyle AOL’s related report
Why the color description needs care
The headline’s phrase “unexpected color” can give the wrong impression if read as a specific color identification. The reported coatdress was gray and white, and stylist Sian Clarke of Styled by Sian characterized the head-to-toe palette as neutral. Clarke said, “The head-to-toe neutral palette brings an effortless sense of elegance, pose, and calm.” That is a stylist’s view, not an official explanation from the Princess or the designer. InStyle

What the outfit does—and does not—signal
Clarke also praised the design, saying, “The silhouette of Tolu Coker’s piece is a true reflection of craftsmanship and as a real fashion moment, I couldn’t be more excited to see her wearing a British-Nigerian designer.” The quote expresses the stylist’s reaction; available reports do not include an official statement explaining the outfit’s intended meaning. There is therefore no confirmed basis for treating the gray-and-white look as a deliberate tribute to Nigeria or its flag. InStyle
The reported Princess Diana comparison
One report compared the coatdress’s silhouette and detailing with a red-and-ivory Catherine Walker outfit Princess Diana wore in 1989 at Dartmouth Naval College. The comparison is an editorial observation about two looks, not evidence that the Princess of Wales or Coker intended to reference Diana’s outfit. The reported looks differ in color, designer, and occasion: gray and white by Tolu Coker for the 2026 Nigerian state-visit welcome, compared with red and ivory by Catherine Walker for Diana’s 1989 appearance.
