Jon Stewart’s “Welcome to the resistance” was a wry greeting to viewers after Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election—not a promise that Stewart was launching a full-time political campaign. He immediately joked that his own resistance would be limited by his Monday hosting schedule and the show’s breaks, then turned to why he thought Democrats had lost and closed by reminding viewers that the result was not necessarily permanent.
Why Stewart called it “the resistance”
Stewart opened the Monday post-election episode of The Daily Show with “Welcome to the resistance.” The line invoked the language of opposition after Trump’s victory, but Stewart undercut its grand tone with a joke about his own availability: he hosted the show on Mondays, with breaks and holidays. Vanity Fair described the monologue as nearly 15 minutes long. Vanity Fair’s November 12, 2024 report covered the opening and the monologue.
What Stewart said about the Democrats’ loss
Stewart mocked pundits for confidently explaining the result after many had predicted a close election. He pushed back against the claim that Democrats had lost because their campaign was “too woke.” In his telling, their messaging had instead leaned toward conservative positions on issues such as immigration and policing: Democrats, he argued, had acted like Republicans, while voters felt that government was not working for them.
That was Stewart’s interpretation in a comedy monologue, not an independently established explanation for the election result. Salon quoted him joking, “It turns out the election was stolen . . . by more people voting for Donald Trump.” The completed clause makes the joke’s meaning clear: he was referring to voters choosing Trump, not alleging ballot theft. Salon’s November 12, 2024 report covered the episode and his argument.

How he reassured viewers
Stewart ended on perspective rather than prediction. “I just want to please assure people this isn’t forever,” he said, then showed the 1984 electoral map, when Ronald Reagan won every state except Minnesota. Stewart pointed out that a Democratic president returned eight years later, while also acknowledging that nobody knew what would happen in four years. The map served as a reminder that political fortunes can change, not a forecast of when or how they would.
Where the episode aired
When Salon published its report on November 12, 2024, it said The Daily Show aired on Comedy Central and streamed on Paramount+. That is a contemporaneous account of availability, not confirmation of the services’ current catalogs.
