At the March 10, 2024, Academy Awards, Jimmy Kimmel ended his opening monologue by thanking the crew members who had supported Hollywood’s writers and actors during their strikes—and promising that the industry would support those workers in their own upcoming negotiations. It was a public gesture of solidarity, not a labor agreement.
Why Kimmel turned the monologue to crew members
Kimmel hosted the 96th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, his fourth time hosting, according to the Los Angeles Times. The ceremony came after the 2023 Writers Guild of America (WGA) and SAG-AFTRA strikes had ended: the writers’ strike concluded in late September, and the actors’ strike in early November, the Los Angeles Times reported.
After joking about the strikes, Kimmel shifted from the writers and actors to the workers who had “rallied beside us.” He said the work stoppage had taught Hollywood that, for all its pretension and superficiality, “at its heart is a union town.” That was Kimmel’s characterization of the industry, not a formal finding about every person working in it. The monologue transcript records the remarks.
Which workers he thanked
Kimmel called for applause for Teamsters and workers in trucking, lighting, sound, camera, gaffing, and gripping. He recognized that many had refused to cross picket lines during the writers’ and actors’ strikes, then invited crew members in the audience onto the stage. His call for workers wearing Skechers to stand was a joke addressed to the room, not an endorsement.

TheWrap reported that people representing IATSE, Teamsters 399, and Basic Crafts were among those recognized. Kimmel’s list of crafts and the report’s list of unions describe different things; the moment does not establish that every crew member present belonged to the same union. TheWrap’s account says the group received a standing ovation.
What Kimmel promised—and what he did not
Addressing the crew members, Kimmel said: “You deserve a thank you for standing with us. And also, we want you to know that in your upcoming negotiation, we will stand with you too.” The pledge referred to negotiations ahead for the behind-the-scenes workers; it was not a contract, a negotiated settlement, or evidence that their concerns had been resolved.

TheWrap reported that the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes had lasted a combined 191 days. That is the outlet’s combined figure for the two strikes, not a claim that any one worker was out of work for that entire period. TheWrap also described health-plan discussions involving the unions and studios, and said IATSE talks on the Hollywood Basic Agreement were beginning with a July 31, 2024, contract expiration approaching. Those were developments reported in March 2024, not a statement of current contract status.

The tribute made visible a form of reciprocal solidarity: crew members had supported writers and actors on strike, and Kimmel urged Hollywood to stand by those crews when their bargaining came around. IATSE’s account responded, as quoted by TheWrap: “Thank you for recognizing our behind the scenes professionals, and that nothing moves without the crew.” The ceremony offered recognition and a public promise; the negotiations themselves remained separate from the Oscars.
