In the docuseries Before the End: Searching for Jim Morrison, Jim Morrison’s brother Andy Morrison said he believed Jim’s heavy drinking and broader lifestyle contributed to his death. Andy also thought his brother wanted to return to serious writing and take a break from The Doors—not necessarily leave the band permanently. Those are Andy’s retrospective views, not a new forensic finding about how Jim died.
What Andy Morrison said about Jim’s plans
PEOPLE reported on January 13, 2025, that Andy Morrison was among the people from Jim’s inner circle interviewed for Before the End: Searching for Jim Morrison. Andy said he thought Jim wanted to focus again on writing: “I think he actually wanted to get back into some serious writing. And maybe he’d outgrown the Doors thing, had been enough.”
Andy qualified the idea that Jim had outgrown the band. “Whether he was 100% done, I think not. I think he just needed a break.” His comments describe what he believed his brother wanted; they do not establish that Jim had decided to quit The Doors.
Andy’s view of what contributed to Jim’s death
Andy also offered his own assessment of Jim’s health and lifestyle, saying, “His lifestyle [killed him]. Obviously he drank too much,” as PEOPLE quoted him. He pointed to heavy drinking, weight gain, poor health and drug use as factors in his view. The report does not say Andy witnessed Jim’s final hours, so his remarks should be understood as a family member’s retrospective opinion, not firsthand testimony about the death itself.

What is known about the reported medical finding
Jim Morrison was found dead in his Paris apartment on July 3, 1971, aged 27. PEOPLE’s 2021 account reported that a French medical examiner ruled the death a heart attack and that no autopsy was performed. With no autopsy, the reporting does not establish what substances, if any, were in Morrison’s system when he died.
| Account | What it says | Evidence and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Reported medical finding | A French medical examiner ruled the death a heart attack. | Reported by PEOPLE; no autopsy was performed. |
| Andy Morrison’s perspective | He believed lifestyle factors, including excessive drinking, contributed to Jim’s death. | A retrospective family perspective; the report does not describe Andy as a witness to Jim’s final hours. |
| Later accounts and theories | Conflicting explanations and recollections have circulated about the death. | PEOPLE describes them as uncertain; the reviewed reporting does not resolve or verify them. |
Why accounts of Morrison’s final hours remain disputed
The reported medical ruling, Andy’s opinion and later accounts are different kinds of claims. The medical ruling is the reported official finding; Andy’s comments concern what he believed about his brother’s habits and intentions; later stories may depend on recollections or theories. PEOPLE’s coverage describes those later accounts as conflicting and uncertain. They should not be treated as established facts, and the reporting available here is not enough to adjudicate every version of events.

Jim Morrison’s writing and the family’s collected volume
Andy’s belief that Jim wanted to return to serious writing connects his comments to the work the family later sought to preserve. In a 2021 PEOPLE report, Jim’s sister Anne Morrison Chewning said of assembling his writing, “We didn’t want them to just sit there in the vault.” The Collected Works of Jim Morrison draws on 28 privately held notebooks and was described by PEOPLE as nearly 600 pages. It offers a way to explore Morrison’s writing, but it does not establish the circumstances of his death.
